Pablo Milanés: Freedom, Democracy and Racism

A CubaNews translation.
Edited by Walter Lippmann.

Once again, just before his Miami concert next August 27, privileged author-singer Pablo Milanés acts “mischievously” and reiterates criticisms he has been making for a number of years about the lack of freedom on the island and the discrimination against blacks. “Every Cuban in Cuba must have the right to leave the country without a permit card or going through a particular bureaucratic filter,” said Milanés in an interview with El Nuevo Herald, the journal of the Cuban-American terrorist mafia in Miami, which was also published by Efe and spread widely by the big media.

Milanés also talked about the death of dissident Orlando Zapata in January 2010 after a hunger strike of several months. “From a humanitarian perspective, I believe such things should not be allowed to happen. A person has the right to protest and the state must protect his life regardless of the nature of the protest,” said the 68 year-old singer.

Although he said he still believes in socialism, he declared he does not trust the men who implement it, “If we think of socialism as a system to satisfy human beings from all points of view: the economy, love, the spirit, peace; we can say that none of the socialisms produced so far has achieved these goals.”

I think it is necessary to reply to such statements for a number of reasons among them their widespread circulation and media manipulation, and because I am well-acquainted as a witness (1958-2011) with no other privileges than the morality of Cuban reality.

Firstly, on the subject of the lack of freedom on the island: it is difficult to understand how a person with general and political culture, who has had as few others the opportunity to travel around the planet and see that all freedoms (except for those of living on illusions and dying of disappointment) without exception, i.e., travelling, having a good education and good health care, decent housing, etc. even running a humble media service, are subordinated to the economic power that is within the reach –more and more so each day – of a minority. What lack of freedom, for what and for whom is he talking about?

On the right of Cubans to leave the country: it is true that a number of bureaucratic obstacles should be eliminated, but it is also true that the main bureaucratic, political and other obstacles emanate from recipient countries, mainly the US.

That it was none other than Pablito, believe it or not! who affirmed that there is discrimination of blacks and racism in Cuba you need … “he should know”… to ignore history or be real ……. Because everybody knows that thanks to the Revolution for the first time, constitutionally and in actual fact, racism was abolished (It's a very different thing that there are still racist people). It would be interesting if he could explain with data and evidence what racial discrimination he is talking about and whether it is of himself.

About his criticism and condemnation with half-truths of the death, after several months of hunger strike, of Orlando Zapata: for this to be “apart from ideologies” constructive, honest, objective and, above all, respectable, Pablito should have explained to public opinion from the beginning, in full detail, the true story and identity of the repeat felon turned overnight -- by the action of media terrorism-- into a very famous “charity brother” and peaceful dissident. Such manipulation!! There was no mention of the efforts made by the Cuban government to save his life of which there is unquestionable evidence.

This rebel-socialist and others who make the same criticisms, must be reminded that Cuba, despite its own mistakes, and a genocidal blockade lasting more than 50 years, is still the country with more doctors and teachers per capita in the world; where, without exception, the son of a minister and the son of a worker, whites, mulattos, blacks, yellows, go together to the same (good or bad) day-care center, school, university, etc.; that Cuba is the country where material richness is more equitably distributed. Let’s not forget freedom of religion, of sex, abortion, divorce, etc. Social conquests not yet achieved in the great majority of countries (including the so'called developed). I ask Pablito how he can affirm that in Cuba socialism has not been or is not practiced in any of its aspects.

If in fact Pablito, as he affirmed, keeps his faith in socialism, I urge him to be “brave”. To be constructive, his criticisms must be true and should be well-addressed and substantiated with names and surnames. Otherwise they become false, immoral and destructive.

Whether short-sighted Pablito likes it or not, Cuban socialism, despite all its mistakes and assorted opportunists, is still the most equalitarian and least unfair society in the planet. He knows it.

Having said this and to conclude: There is no time to waste! Once again I say (let’s not be naive) the Cuban Revolution will only be irreversible if we can put into practice the wise and fair advice of Fidel, Raúl and Ché; if we can criticize and rectify all that needs rectifying, if we can fight bureaucracy, egalitarianism, indiscipline, secretiveness  which is only useful to hide political or economical immorality. In other words if we can fight corruption in all its manifestations, if we debate and analyze time and again, (with the healthy practice of criticism and self-criticism) the brave, fair and objective statements of  leaders Fidel and Raúl who said that if we do not solve the problems mentioned before, the Revolution runs the risk of being devoured as others were (USSR) by its own children, and as Raúl Castro recently affirmed, the worst, most dangerous and immoral “dissidents” are not in Miami

It’s crystal clear!

WE MUST NOT STAND IDLE!
