The photograph The Kiss, showing the King of Rock and Roll with a skinny blond woman, is perhaps one of the most iconic pictures of the 1950s and certainly one of the most storied in Elvis lore. But not even Alfred Wertheimer, who snapped the shutter just at the moment of contact, knew the identity of Presley’s mystery date.

Around 1965, when Elvis Presley was about to become the King, he was often photographed with some “nameless” girl, but none sparked off more tittle-tattle than the blond woman in black snapped by Alfred Wertheimer backstage minutes before a concert in Richmond, Virginia, in the summer of ‘56.

Ever since the picture was published, no one on the Richmond music scene, or in Elvis’s inner circle, seemed to know who she was.

Almost 55 years after Elvis touched tongues with the alluring blonde, writer Alanna Nash, author of Elvis Presley and the Women Who Loved Him, discloses the identity of the mystery woman, age  75 in an exclusive interview she gave to the magazine Vanity Fair.

Her name is Barbara Gray, who by her own admission bears little resemblance to the babe in the picture. “But, hey, what do you want? I was 20 years old,” she says good-naturedly. “Now I’m 75. I was very thin and very stacked. Every time I would go to get fitted for a bra, the sales ladies would say, ‘Gosh, you have such lovely breasts’.”

“I never bothered to ask her name and she never bothered to tell me,” remarks Wertheimer, now an 81-year-old man surrounded by Elvis books and photos.

Deciding to come clean more than half a century after the seductive shot was taken, Barbara Gray switched on her computer, tracked Wertheimer on Facebook, and fired off a message:

I’m the girl on ‘The Kiss’. I have a good story for you… Please answer this e-mail.” She signed off: Bobbi Owens, using her maiden name.

La foto The kiss - El beso- de Elvis Presley con una delgada rubia, es quizás uno de los retratos más icónicos de los 50’s y seguramente la foto con más historia en la tradición del Rey del Roc’n Roll. Pero ni siquiera Alfred Wertheimer, el fotógrafo de la famosa escena, conocía la identidad de la misteriosa chica que coqueteaba con Presley.

En 1965 cuando Elvis Presley estaba a punto de convertirse en el rey del rock ‘n’ roll, era retratado con frecuencia con alguna chica “sin nombre”, pero ningún misterio fue tan glorioso como el de la rubia de vestido negro tomada por el fotógrafo Alfred Wertheimer tras bambalinas antes de un concierto en Richmond, Virginia, en el verano de 1956.

Desde que la foto fue publicada, nadie en la escena musical de Richmond, o en círculo íntimo de Elvis, parecía saber quién era.

Casi 55 años después de que Elvis tocara la lengua de la seductora rubia, la escritora Alanna Nash, autora de Elvis Presley y las mujeres que lo encantaron revela la identidad de la misteriosa mujer, de 75 años, en una entrevista exclusiva con la rubia, dada para la revista Vanityfair.

Se trata de Bárbara Gray una mujer de 75 años que poco parecido guarda con la chica de la foto, pero como ella misma dice con gracia: “Pero, hey, ¿qué quieres? Yo tenía 20 años (…) Ahora tengo 75, yo era delgada y de senos grandes; cada vez que iba a comprar un brasier las vendedoras me decían: ‘Dios mío, tiene hermosos senos.”

“Nunca me molesté en preguntarle su nombre y ella nunca se molestó en decirme”, dice Wertheimer, ahora un hombre de 81 años rodeado de libros y fotos de Elvis.

A más de 50 años de la seductora imagen, Bárbara Gray enciende su computador, localiza el perfil del fotógrafo en Facebook y decide presentarse como la chica del beso:

“Yo soy la chica de El beso . Tengo una buena historia para ti … Por favor, responda este e-mail firma: Bobbi Owens” (su nombre de soltera)
