British Prime Minister, David Cameron, today confirmed that the government is considering to prevent those responsible for the recent riots and violent incidents in London and other English cities from using social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook.

Cameron said in an extraordinary session in Parliament that many of the events of recent days "were coordinated through the Internet and cell phones."

"We are working with the police, the intelligence services and the sector (media) to assess whether it is correct to prevent the use for communication via these websites and other services, if it is known that they are planning violence, riots and crime," stressed the president.

He also confirmed that the police could give power to declare curfews in case of disturbances such as those reported recently in the country.

"We will not stop until this senseless violence and bullying are defeated, and law and order are reestablished completely in our streets," he said.

According to Cameron, there is evidence that "criminal gangs" were behind some of the violence.

Independent analysts have questioned the British media and the demonization of the protests in Britain. Politicians and police have described the riots as a pure crime, with young people emptying stores in what appeared to be targeted attacks, when what is in the background are the government's austerity measures, which has hit the poor hardest.

El primer ministro británico, David  Cameron, confirmó hoy que el gobierno considera impedirle a  aquellos responsables de los recientes disturbios e incidentes  de violencia en Londres y otras ciudades inglesas utilizar  sitios de redes sociales como Twitter o Facebook.

Cameron afirmó en una sesión extraordinaria en el Parlamento  que muchos de los hechos ocurridos en los últimos días “fueron  coordinados a través del Internet y teléfonos celulares”.

“Estamos trabajando con la Policía, los servicios de  Inteligencia y el sector (de comunicación) para evaluar si es  correcto impedir que se utilice comunicación vía estos sitios  web y otros servicios, si se tiene conocimiento que están  planeando violencia, disturbios y criminalidad”, subrayó el  mandatario.

También confirmó que se podría darle a la Policía poderes  para proclamar toques de queda en caso de disturbios como los  registrados recientemente en el país.

“No vamos a detenernos hasta que esta violencia sin sentido y  bravuconadas sean derrotadas, y la ley y el orden se  reestablezcan por completo en nuestras calles”, agregó.

Según Cameron, existe evidencia acerca de que “bandas  criminales” estuvieron detrás de algunos de los hechos de  violencia.

Analistas independientes y medios británicos han cuestionado la demonización de las protestas en Gran Bretaña. Los políticos y la policía han descrito los disturbios como pura delincuencia, con jóvenes vaciando tiendas en lo que parecían ataques dirigidos, cuando lo que está en el trasfondo son las medidas de austeridad del Gobierno, que ha golpeado a los pobres con más fuerza.
