Wikileaks: Yoani Sánchez, work-less and yet rewarded

Yoani Sánchez’s “work” has been published in different countries and languages.


When we first saw cables about Cuba among those disclosed by Wikileaks, we wrote in La pupila insomne:

“Only one cable from the U.S. Interests Section in Havana has come out which dragged through the mud the Madrid daily that used a tour de force to try and make a big scoop with its editorials, quite identified with the anti-Cuban campaigns. If they’ve had to do that as a result of the answers to a routine questionnaire in which the U.S. diplomats speak in praise of their safety to work in Cuba, it is to be expected that the other 2080 cables related to the island contain information that neither Washington nor El País would like to go public.”

Finally, after a number of skirmishes involving the said newspaper that they tried to conceal from the public, a few uncomfortable truths begin to surface from among the cables wired by the U.S. representatives in Havana. Like someone Tweeted days ago, “it’s almost a perfect match for what El País has been saying for decades from a single source: the State Department”. What’s certain is that the views of the American diplomats in Cuba are overwhelmingly consistent with those of the Spanish daily. Such is the case of a cable about Fidel’s health and the appraisal ventured by El País correspondent in Havana forecasting the Cuban leader’s “political decease” or the articles about our economy. And yet the strategic bond between the daily and the State Department is best seen in the fabrication and promotion of the “cyber-dissident” Yoani Sánchez, whom the former helped collect a string of prizes ever since she received the formerly prestigious Ortega y Gasset reward in April, 2008. So it’s been confirmed in a recently disclosed cable sent by the U.S. Interests Section in Cuba dated April 15, 2009.

A common goal seems to have since brought together PRISA and the U.S. government: the fabrication and funding of an “intellectual” by means of prizes and publicity. Despite a contempt for culture that she has acknowledged herself in her blog –where she wrote, “By the time I graduated from the University I had learned two things: the first was that I found all things intellectual and cultural really disgusting, and the second and most painful one was that I didn’t want to be a philologist anymore”– the extremely intense efforts to sell Sánchez as a legitimate intellectual have gone so far as to lead a newspaper like La Jornada to mistake her husband for a prestigious Cuban writer of similar name but different surname.

Her disregard for philology notwithstanding, the online encyclopedia Wikipedia defines Yoani Sánchez in as laudatory terms as “a Cuban philologist and journalist” and includes a section called Blogging and publishing with a list of texts she has published in her blog in Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, German, Italian and Polish language, as well as another clause dedicated to Books written about Yoani. What royalties she has collected for the many editions of her “work” plus the money coming from several of the fifteen international prizes she has reaped are surely above two hundred thousand dollars. Even without any literary merit to her credit, the profits and cash prizes that Sánchez has received in hardly two years are likely to have exceeded those that may have been given to all Cuban writers opposed to the Revolution together, from the poet Heberto Padilla to the novelist Jesús Díaz. Not even Raúl Rivero, the famed poet turned “independent journalist” at the service of the U.S., comes nowhere near the author of Generation Y. Perhaps only a famous writer like Guillermo Cabrera Infante, winner of the Cervantes award during José María Aznar’s government, can be compared to this character, although not for too long, judging by the speed with which the prizes are coming the blogger’s way. It goes without saying that no Cuban intellectual with a solid output under his/her belt who is not a cog of the anti-Cuban propaganda wheel can even dream of receiving a similar recognition.


Much as the world media are as a rule unconcerned about promoting literature, Yoani Sánchez’s “work” has enjoyed extensive coverage.

That we have learned from statements by U.S. diplomats in their own handwriting that their country has pinned its hopes for the future of its goals in Cuba on the creature sprung from its marriage to the PRISA Group speaks by itself. The way things are going with the Nobel Prize, this cable brings to mind what the famous Cuban intellectual Ambrosio Fornet said in a Conference of Spanish Language academicians that Yoani Sánchez invited him to attend:

“Before two years, this girl Yoani will get a Peace Nobel Prize… She already received the Ortega y Gasset and selected as one of the world’s one hundred most influential personalities… Well, she doesn’t have a Nobel Prize yet, but she will get one.”

La "obra" de Yoani Sánchez reconocida en diversos idiomas y países

Al conocerse los primeros cables relacionados con Cuba entre los filtrados por Wikileaks, habíamos escrito en La pupila insomne:

“De la Oficina de Intereses norteamericanos en La Habana sólo se ha dado a conocer un cable que dejó bastante mal parado al diario madrileño que, mediante un tour de force, trató de arrimar la brasa a la sardina de su política editorial, bastante identificada con los ataques contra el gobierno cubano. Cuando han tenido que hacer eso con la respuesta a un cuestionario de rutina en que los diplomáticos norteamericanos elogian las condiciones de seguridad para su trabajo en Cuba, es de suponer que el resto de los 2080 relacionados con la isla contiene informaciones nada agradables para Washington y El País.”

Finalmente, luego de algunas escaramuzas que involucran al mismo periódico, y que se han tratado de escamotear a los lectores, comienzan a aparecer algunas verdades incómodas entre los cables de la representación norteamericana en La Habana. Como dijo alguien en la red social Twitter: “coincide casi exactamente con lo que EL PAÍS lleva publicando durante lustros, es redundancia en la fuente: Depto de Estado”. Lo cierto es que resulta abrumadora la total coherencia entre las apreciaciones de los diplomáticos norteamericanos en Cuba y el diario madrileño. Así sucede con el cable sobre la salud de Fidel y las valoraciones publicadas por el corresponsal de El País en La Habana pronosticando la “muerte política” del líder cubano, o las apreciaciones del periódico acerca de la economía de la Isla. Pero donde asoma mejor la coordinación estratégica entre el grupo mediático y el State Department es en la fabricación y promoción de la “ciberdisidente” Yoani Sánchez, a quien el periódico español lanzara a la recolección de premios en serie desde que le otorgó el antes prestigioso galardón Ortega y Gasset, en abril de 2008. Lo confirma el cable de la Oficina de Intereses de EE.UU. en Cuba con fecha 15 de abril de 2009, recién publicado.

Un objetivo parece haber entrelazado desde entonces el trabajo de PRISA y el gobierno norteamericano: construir y financiar una “intelectual”  a base de premios y publicidad.  A pesar de su  desprecio por la cultura, que ella misma ha confesado en el perfil de su blog: “Al terminar la Universidad había comprendido dos cosas: la primera, que el mundo de la intelectualidad y la alta cultura me repugnaba y la más dolorosa, que ya no quería ser filóloga”, la intensísima estrategia de legitimación intelectual de Sánchez ha llevado a que hasta un periódico como La Jornada haya confundido a su esposo con un prestigioso escritor cubano, con igual nombre pero distinto apellido.

A pesar de su rechazo a la filología, la enciclopedia en línea Wikipedia define a Yoani Sánchez, en una reseña totalmente laudatoria, como “filóloga y periodista cubana”. El mismo artículo contiene una sección que bajo el título “Libros escritos por Yoani“  alude  a compilaciones de textos aparecidos en su blog en español, portugués, inglés, francés, alemán, italiano y polaco; además de otro acápite que recoge los “Libros escritos sobre Yoani“.  Con seguridad los derechos de autor cobrados por las numerosas ediciones de  su “obra”, unidos al valor  en metálico de varios de los quince premios internacionales cosechados  por ella, rebasan los doscientos mil dólares.  Es muy probable que sin mérito literario alguno,   los ingresos   y galardones entregados a Sánchez -en apenas dos años- superen con creces los que puedan haber recibido juntos todos los escritores cubanos hostiles a la Revolución, desde el poeta  Heberto Padilla al novelista Jesús Díaz. Ni Raúl Rivero, con una trayectoria reconocida como poeta antes de dedicarse al “periodismo independiente” al servicio de Estados Unidos, alcanza a la autora de Generación Y. Tal vez sólo la celebridad del narrador Guillermo Cabera Infante,  distinguido con el Premio Cervantes durante el gobierno de José María Aznar, sea comparable con la de este personaje; aunque a juzgar por la velocidad a la que se incrementan los premios a la bloguera no será así por mucho tiempo. Obvia decir que intelectuales cubanos con una sólida obra  que no estén al servicio de la maquinaria propagandística contra su país no pueden imaginarse ni remotamente reconocimientos similares.

Los grandes medios, que generalmente no se ocupan de difundir la literatura, han promovido abundantemente la "obra" de Yoani Sánchez

Conocer de puño y letra de los diplomáticos norteamericanos las esperanzas que Estados Unidos sitúa para el futuro de sus objetivos en Cuba en la creación que le ha proporcionado su matrimonio con el Grupo PRISA resulta muy revelador. Unido al camino que va tomando el Premio Nobel, ese cable me ha hecho recordar estas palabras del relevante intelectual cubano Ambrosio Fornet, a raíz de una invitación a Yoani Sánchez para participar en un Congreso de académicos de la lengua española:

“antes de dos años esta muchacha, Yoani, recibirá el Premio Nobel de la Paz… Ya le dieron el Ortega y Gasset, ya quedó como una de las cien personalidades más influyentes del mundo… Bueno, lo que le falta es el Premio Nobel, y se lo darán.”

Dios nos coja confesados.
