Castro predicts release of the five spies

Former President Fidel Castro predicted that the five Cuban spies
imprisoned in U.S. since 1998 would be back on the island "well before

Castro made the remarks during a meeting Monday with Cuban intellectuals
and members of Pastors for Peace, religious Americans traveling to Cuba
each year to challenge U.S. sanctions.

Castro went on to wonder what it would cost the U.S. authorities to
release these "five human beings who have been separated from their
families.''
"And they're going to have to let them go. I think now more than ever

The five, who were part of the so-called Wasp Network, were arrested in
Miami in 1998 and sentenced to long prison terms. One of them received
life imprisonment for his role in the destruction by the Cuban air force
of two planes belonging to Brothers to the Rescue, killing four
residents of southern Florida.
Cuba has maintained a persistent campaign demanding the release
of the five, saying that its mission was to monitor terrorist groups in
exile. The network also spied on the activities of a naval base in the
Florida Keys, the Southern Command in Miami and Tampa air base that
serves as the headquarters of Central Command for military operations in
the Middle East.
The Cuban government has never officially offered an exchange of the
five persons for those serving prison in Cuba accused of treason or of
working for foreign intelligence services, according to officials in
Washington.
American Subcontractor Alan P. Gross was arrested on 3 December in
Havana to deliver satellite communications equipment to groups of Jews
on the island. Cuban officials have alleged that Gross had ties to U.S.
intelligence, but so far no charges have been imposed [filed].

El ex gobernante Fidel Castro vaticinó que los
cinco espías cubanos encarcelados en Estados Unidos desde 1998 estarían
de regreso en la isla "mucho antes del fin del año''.
Castro hizo las declaraciones durante un encuentro el lunes con
intelectuales cubanos y algunos miembros de Pastores por la Paz,
religiosos norteamericanos que viajan a Cuba cada año para desafiar las
sanciones de Washington.
Un video de la reunión exhibido en el blog progubernamental Yohandry's
Weblog, muestra a Castro diciendo: "Tú te imaginas, que los cinco
compañeros que están allí, separados en las cárceles (...) y que no
tengan el menor gesto de ponerlos en libertad''.
Castro continuó preguntándose qué les costaría a las autoridades
norteamericanas liberar a estos "cinco seres humanos separados de la
familia''.
"Y los van a tener que soltar. Yo ahora creo más que nunca que están muy
cerca de que los suelten'', dijo. "El fin de año pueden prepararse ya
(...). Pero mucho antes del fin del año (...). Me responsabilizo con
decírselo a las familias''.
Los cinco, que formaban parte de la llamada Red Avispa, fueron detenidos
en Miami en 1998 y condenados a largos años de prisión. Uno de ellos
recibió cadena perpetua por su papel en la destrucción por parte de la
fuerza aérea cubana de dos avionetas de Hermanos al Rescate, donde
murieron cuatro residentes del sur de la Florida.
Cuba ha mantenido una insistente campaña para reclamar la libertad de
los cinco, argumentando que su misión era monitorear a grupos de
terroristas exiliados. La red también espió las actividades de una base
naval en los cayos de la Florida, el Comando Sur en Miami y una base
aérea en Tampa que sirve como sede del comando central para operaciones
militares en el Medio Oriente.
El gobierno cubano nunca ha ofrecido oficialmente un canje de los cinco
