The
province of Cienfuegos paid its last respects to one of their own, José
García Montebravo, a painter of great social standing in his native land
and a true representative of naïf art in contemporary Cuba, who died at
57 of a liver complaint.Albeit belated –in the 1980s– his imprint on Cuban visual arts was so influential that his intensely poetic work soon caught the attention of gallery owners and critics in Cuba and around the world.

OF JOSEPH GARCIA MONTEBRAVO.So it happened in a city as highly competitive as New York, where his work was promoted by Sandra Levinson and the Cuban Study Center. Over and above his academic background, Montebravo’s fresh and original approach reflected the spirituality of his fellow citizens and the lush plant life of his land using illustrations that he tailored to his own sensitivity.
His hometown, it’s worth mentioning, had made other outstanding contributions to this kind of art –also known by the inaccurate name of primitive or ingenuous– like Benjamín and Ñika Duarte, all inspired by the great exponent of Cuban culture that Samuel Feijóo was.
Montebravo turned that page and set a precedent in his time without betraying the legacy of Cuba’s pictorial traditions, which he came to meet not by training but out of sheer curiosity and cleverness, because he had what it takes –eyes to see and hands to paint– and made a name for himself in his line.

cienfuegueros despidieron el pasado fin de semana a José García
Montebravo, uno de los pintores que mayor reconocimiento social gozó en
su terruño y que en el ámbito nacional clasificaba como uno de los más
genuinos representantes del arte naif en tiempos recientes. El artista
falleció a consecuencia de una enfermedad hepática a los 57 años de edad.
En el panorama de las artes visuales cubanas comenzó a dejar su huella tardíamente, pero con tanta intensidad a partir de los ochenta que muy pronto su poética llamó la atención de galeristas y críticos más allá de nuestras fronteras.

Tal fue el caso de la presencia de su obra en Nueva York, donde resultó promovido por Sandra Levinson y el Centro de Estudios Cubanos. En un medio tan competitivo como ese, Montebravo encontró un nicho de aceptación, a partir de la frescura y originalidad con que, al margen de la información académica, reflejó la espiritualidad de los habitantes de su isla, los efluvios vegetales tan cercanos a su entorno vital y la iconografía amoldada a su sensibilidad.
Cienfuegos, es bueno recordarlo, había hecho aportes notorios a este tipo de arte, también de modo inexacto llamado primitivo o ingenuo, en las figuras de Benjamín y Ñika Duarte, alentados por ese extraordinario personaje de la cultura cubana que fue Samuel Feijóo.
Montebravo dio vuelta a esa página precedente y se instaló en la dimensión de su época, sin traicionar el legado de las tradiciones pictóricas cubanas, a las que llegó por la vía de la curiosidad y la inteligencia y no de la formación.
