Internationalist Work of Cuban Stomatologists Highlighted

The presence of Cuban stomatologists in health internationalist missions since this tradition of solidarity of the Revolution began in 1963 with the sending of a medical brigade to Algeria was highlighted on Wednesday in Havana during the opening of the Stomatology Convention, attended by Public Health Minister and Politburo member José Ramón Balaguer.

During these decades, in tasks of both health care and teaching, almost 50% of the country’s current 11,572 stomatologists have fulfilled internationalist missions as part of the Comprehensive Health Program and Barrio Adentro, underlined Néstor Marimón, director for International Relations of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).
Over the last 10 years, 5,475 specialists in Stomatology have offered their services beyond our borders, and more than 400 students from other nations have received their certificates as graduates in this profession in Cuba.
Néstor Marimón emphasized the need for a greater acknowledgement of the work of stomatologists, not covered enough by the mass media, and called on these professionals to put their experiences as actors of these beautiful deeds into writing. He mentioned four of the specialists that made up the mission to Algeria -Drs. Noema del Carmen Lara Rodríguez, Eberto Cué Reyes, Eduardo Llanes Llanes and Reinaldo de la Cruz García (deceased).
The inaugural session included the welcoming speech by Dr. Ileana Grau, Dean of Havana’s Faculty of Stomatology, and the lectures The National Health System and the Medical University and Population Aging: a Global Perspective, in charge of Drs. Antonio González, head of the Department for International Organizations of the MINSAP, and Juan Carlos Alfonso, director of the Center for Population and Development Studies of the National Office of Statistics, respectively.
Society and its health system are getting ready to face
the increasingly growing aging population. At present, 17.4% of Cubans
(almost two million people) are 60 years old or more; and by 2025, 15
years from now, this figure will reach 26.1%, that is, some three
million inhabitants.

mouth and
its
diseases; originally practiced by
physicians, it was a standard medical specialty through the early
20th century but in the
U.S. it is now the province of
dentists. In
Europe
it requires a minimum of 3 years'
university training beyond the medical degree (Medical
doctor)[citation
needed], and the same material is studied as part of a
dental degree. The specialty is defined within Europe under the
Medical
Directive 2001/19/EC.

Destacan labor internacionalista de estomatólogos cubanos

La presencia de los estomatólogos cubanos en las misiones internacionalistas de la Salud, desde que se inició en 1963 esta tradición solidaria de la Revolución con el envío a Argelia de una brigada médica, fue destacada ayer en La Habana en la apertura de la Convención de Estomatología, que contó con la asistencia de José Ramón Balaguer, ministro de Salud Pública y miembro del Buró Político del Partido.
A
la doctora Isabel Jankielewicz, del Uruguay, le fue conferida la
categoría docente especial de Profesora Invitada de la Universidad de
Ciencias Médicas de La Habana
Durante estas décadas, tanto en labores asistenciales como docentes, casi el 50% de los 11 572 estomatólogos con que cuenta hoy el país ha cumplido misión como parte del Programa Integral de Salud y Barrio Adentro, destacó el Máster en Ciencias Néstor Marimón, director de Relaciones Internacionales del MINSAP.
En los últimos 10 años, 5 475 especialistas en Estomatología han prestado asistencia fuera de nuestras fronteras, y más de 400 estudiantes de otras naciones recibieron sus títulos de esta profesión en Cuba.
Néstor Marimón puso de relieve la necesidad de un mayor reconocimiento a la labor de los estomatólogos, no suficientemente citada por los medios de comunicación, e hizo un llamado a estos profesionales para que escriban sus experiencias como actores de estas hermosas gestas. Mencionó a cuatro de los especialistas que integraron la misión a Argelia. Son ellos los doctores Noema del Carmen Lara Rodríguez, Eberto Cué Reyes, Eduardo Llanes Llanes y Reinaldo de la Cruz García, este último ya fallecido.
En la sesión inaugural, con las palabras de bienvenida de la doctora Ileana Grau, decana de la Facultad de Estomatología de La Habana, se dictaron también las conferencias El sistema nacional de salud y la Universidad Médica, y Perspectiva global del envejecimiento poblacional, a cargo de los doctores Antonio González, jefe del Departamento de Organismos Internacionales del MINSAP, y Juan Carlos Alfonso, director del Centro de Estudios de Población y Desarrollo de la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas.
La sociedad, y su sistema de Salud, se preparan para hacer frente al creciente envejecimiento poblacional. En la actualidad un 17,4% de los cubanos (casi dos millones de personas) tienen 60 años y más; y para el 2025, dentro de 15 años, estas cifras se elevarán al 26,1%, unos tres millones de sus habitantes.
