Silvio Dedicates Concert to Pete Seeger

Second presentation of the Cuban singer-songwriter at the Carnegie Hall

PEDRO DE LA HOZ

Pete Seeger, overcome by emotion, received the tribute paid to him by Silvio Rodríguez, when he dedicated his second concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall to that mythical figure of the US folk song.

PETE SEEGER, a legend of the most genuine US popular music

This moving encounter between the two artists took place a year and a half after the US authorities prevented the Cuban troubadour from participating in a tribute paid to Seeger at the Madison Square Gardens, by denying him an entry visa,.

Silvio himself left on his digital binnacle [blog] the testimony of what having Seeger in his presentation of Thursday night meant to him: "For 91 years, he has been learning songs anywhere to teach them everywhere. He has left a little piece of Cuba in the United States, a bit of Africa in Italy, an air of Spain in Japan. Borders don’t exist for Pete. If there’s a man who can mend dreams, that’s him. His life has been an example of fraternity, of love towards human beings and Nature. He is a song we should all learn."

Born on May 3, 1919, in New York, Pete Seeger was persecuted for this social activism during the McCarthy era; he made José Martí’s verses popular in the world by setting them to the music of La guantanamera; and put in the mouth of many Americans the song I feel I’m fixing to die rag against the attack on Vietnam.
