Fidel Receives Representatives of the Catholic Church
on the 70th Anniversary of Relations between
Cuba and the Holy See
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the
establishing of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between the Republic of Cuba
and the Holy See, last night President Fidel Castro, accompanied by other Party
and government leaders, received Monsignor Luigi Bonazzi, the papal nuncio and
Holy See representative to the Cuban government, and members of the Conference
of Catholic Bishops of Cuba, headed by their president, Cardinal Jaime Ortega
Alamino, Archbishop of Havana. Other figures from the Catholic Church in our
country were also present.
The meeting, which took place in a constructive and
cordial atmosphere, was followed by a dinner during which issues of mutual
interest were discussed, in line with the atmosphere bequeathed to our country,
the world and his own Church by Pope John Paul II, the indefatigable fighter on
behalf of ecumenicalism, unity and cooperation among the diverse religious
denominations, against poverty and for peace in the world.
During the exchange, recalling the Pope’s visit to
Cuba, President Fidel Castro affirmed that the grandeur of John Paul II was his
genius for seeing and understanding the problems of the present-day world.
This meeting was the culminating point of activities
organized in our country to mark the 70th anniversary of relations between Cuba
and the Holy See.

En
conmemoración del aniversario 70 del establecimiento de las relaciones
diplomáticas ininterrumpidas entre la República de Cuba y la Santa Sede, en la
noche de ayer el Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz, Presidente de los Consejos
de Estado y de Ministros, acompañado por otros dirigentes del Partido y del
Gobierno, recibió al Nuncio Apostólico, Monseñor Luigi Bonazzi, representante de
la Santa Sede ante el Gobierno cubano, y a los miembros de la Conferencia de
Obispos Católicos de Cuba, encabezada por su Presidente, el Cardenal Jaime
Ortega Alamino, Arzobispo de La Habana. Otras personalidades de la Iglesia
Católica en nuestro país también estuvieron presentes.
Al final del encuentro, realizado en un ambiente
constructivo y amistoso, tuvo lugar una cena en la que se abordaron temas de
interés mutuo, en correspondencia con la atmósfera que legó a nuestro país, al
mundo y a su propia Iglesia el Papa Juan Pablo II, infatigable luchador en pro
del ecumenismo, la unidad y cooperación entre las diversas denominaciones
religiosas, la lucha contra la pobreza y por la paz en el mundo.
Durante el intercambio, al recordar la visita del
Papa a Cuba, el Comandante en Jefe expresó que la grandeza de Juan Pablo II fue
la genialidad de ver y comprender los problemas del mundo de hoy.
Esta reunión fue el punto culminante de las
actividades que se vienen desarrollando en nuestro país por el aniversario 70 de
las relaciones entre Cuba y la Santa Sede.
