PETITION TO THE NOBEL FOUNDATION
Proposing Fidel Castro as 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Candidate

The undersigned, citizens from Argentina and other countries of the world, are herein proposing the Cuban leader Fidel Castro as 2010 Nobel Peace Prize candidate on behalf of social, labor, human rights, cultural, university, scientific, artistic and political groups and movements.

Our petition is based on Cuba’s achievements with a health care system which cut the infant mortality rate to 4.7 per every thousand births in 2008 and boasts a nearly 100% attendance in primary, secondary and third level education.

It is worth mentioning that, under Fidel Castro’s presidency up to 2006, the Island has enjoyed ceaseless progress in health care –with a biotechnological industry that ranks above any other in the Third World– and education –as evidenced by the Island’s highly cultured population.

That such goals have been attained under an illegal blockade that the U.S. has maintained on Cuba for 47 years stands is no more striking than the fact that the island, inspired by its historical leader, has been able to share its achievements with other peoples of the world. Such is the case with the International School of Medicine which was founded ten years ago and has since taken more than 20.000 students from almost one hundred countries.

Four million people around the world have learned to read using the Cuban “Yes, I Can” method, and 1.6 million people have been operated on through the Cuban “Operation Milagro” ophthalmologic program, in both cases free of charge. Most of the beneficiaries have been poor people deemed “expendable” in the unfair world of multinationals and banks.

While other rulers, including former winners of the Peace Prize, are dedicated to sending in their Marines, dropping not-so-smart bombs on devastated towns, and plundering their natural and human resources, Fidel Castro has sent in “white-coated” armies of doctors, as well as teachers, athletes and artists, to foster peace in the world.

As to the Empire’s attempts to drain the world and throw it into its worst crisis ever, we must bear in mind that Fidel Castro warned as early as in 1983 of the effects of the foreign debt, calling it immoral and fraudulent and holding that it could neither be paid nor collected. Millions of jobs and human lives have been wasted since the beginning of the crisis fueled by the foreign debt just because the realistic and fair proposals made by the then president of Cuba went unheeded.

In 2007 he also warned of the U.S. government’s intentions to produce biofuel from corn and other foods, in line with a plan sponsored by the car industry lobby that only increased starvation and raised food prices, swelling the ranks of the hungry from 840 million at the time to 1.020 billions today.

Furthermore, Fidel Castro alerted us to the need of protecting the environment and opposing capitalism’s alienating styles of production and consumption which have paved the way for global warming and climate change. Seventeen years ago, in Eco-Río ’92, the Cuban leader called us to protect the environment and criticized those governments and international monopolies that put their businesses and excessive thirst for riches before everything else to the point of causing river pollution, exhausting non-renewable resources, overheating the planet and endangering human life.

For the above and many other merits, we support the nomination of Fidel Castro for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.

Las ciudadanas y ciudadanos abajo firmantes, de Argentina y otros países del mundo, propiciamos la candidatura del estadista cubano Fidel Castro para Premio Nobel de la Paz 2010, recogiendo proposiciones de movimientos sociales, gremiales, de derechos humanos, culturales, universitarios, científicos, artísticos y políticos.

Los logros de Cuba en salud y educación, con metas tan elevadas como la drástica disminución de la mortalidad infantil hasta el 4,7 por mil de nacidos vivos en 2008, así como la matrícula escolar que abarca a prácticamente el cien por ciento de la población, etc, así lo ameritan.

Debe tenerse en cuenta que sobre esa base, Cuba bajo la presidencia de Fidel Castro hasta julio de 2006, no cesó de progresar: en salud con una industria biotecnológica ubicada al tope de las similares del Tercermundo, y en educación con una población de altísimo nivel cultural.

Lo llamativo es que tales objetivos se hayan logrado en medio de un ilegal bloqueo estadounidense que ya dura 47 años. Y doblemente llamativo es que tales logros de Cuba, bajo la inspiración de su histórico líder, se hayan compartido con otros pueblos del mundo. Es el caso de la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina que cumplió diez años de vida con una matrícula de más de 20.000 alumnos procedentes de casi cien países.

Con el método cubano “Yo sí puedo” se han alfabetizado 4 millones de personas, y con el programa oftalmológico “Operación Milagro” se ha operado 1.6 millón de personas, en ambos casos, gratuitamente. La mayoría de los beneficiados son de condición humilde y eran los habitantes “descartables” para el mundo injusto de las multinacionales y banqueros.

Mientras otros gobernantes, incluso premiados, se dedican a exportar marines y a arrojar misiles y bombas poco inteligentes sobre pueblos arrasados, y en forma concomitante, a saquear sus recursos naturales y humanos, Fidel Castro ha hecho una contribución a un mundo de paz, fletando médicos y ejércitos de “batas blancas”, maestros, educadores, deportistas y artistas.

En cuanto a los intentos imperiales por vaciar el mundo y arrojarlo al abismo de la más profunda de sus crisis, hay que recordar que Fidel Castro advirtió ya en 1983 contra el fenómeno de la deuda externa, impagable e incobrable, inmoral y fraudulenta. Millones de puestos de trabajo y millones de vidas humanas se han perdido desde aquel comienzo de la crisis de la deuda externa, por no atender a las propuestas realistas y justas del entonces presidente de Cuba.

En 2007 aquél previno contra los planes norteamericanos de fabricar biocombustibles a partir del maíz y los alimentos, un plan auspiciado por el lobby de grandes empresas automotrices que venía a aumentar la legión de hambrientos y encarecer el precio de los alimentos. Ahora hay 1.020 millones de hambrientos en vez de los 840 millones de ese momento.

Fidel Castro hizo advertencias a favor del cuidado del Medio Ambiente y en contra del alienado estilo capitalista de producción y de consumo, que está produciendo el calentamiento global y el cambio climático. Ya en Eco-Río ´92, hace 17 años, el líder cubano llamó a defender el Medio Ambiente y criticó a los gobiernos y monopolios internacionales que anteponen sus negocios y el lucro desmesurado al punto de contaminar los ríos, agotar los recursos no renovables, desertificar la tierra, recalentar el planeta y poner en riesgo la especie humana.

Por todos estos méritos y muchos más, propiciamos la candidatura de Fidel Castro al Nobel de la Paz en 2010.
