III
National Festival of Amateur Artists
of the Cuban Volunteer Workers
in Honduras goes off smoothly
CubaNews translations. Edited by Walter Lippmann.
HONDURAS, October 6, 2009.-
This year’s Festival of Amateur Artists of the Cuban Cooperation
Brigades in Honduras, held on a nationwide scale despite the exceptional
circumstances imposed by the prevailing situation in this country, took
place with great success in the theater of the Teachers Improvement
Professional Association (COLPROSUMAH).
Honduran personalities, leaders of the resistance movement, artists,
locals who sympathize with Cuba and Cubans who live here enjoyed an
excellent performance organized and presented by the solidarity workers
themselves.
Among those who honored the stage were the dance troupe "Cuba y los
Orishas"; poets Norberto Vargas and Luvian Alfonso; the comic duet "Los
Flacos" (Juan Carlos Martínez and Francisco Benavides); a rendition of
"The Spanish Dancer"; singer Yorleivis Azahares and, in charge of
closing, a traditional and quite criollo salsa square dance.
During the second half of October, the regional bodies of Cuban
volunteers held grassroots festivals where they chose the artists who
could best represent them in the national event.
For two hours the audience laughed and enjoyed themselves in a climate
of revolutionary commitment that they seized to also celebrate the 11th
anniversary of the arrival in Honduras of the Cuban Medical Brigade.
Started in 2007, these Festivals of Amateur Artists of the Cuban
Volunteer Workers are eagerly awaited every year by the local population
(Cubaminrex-Embacuba Honduras).

Honduras
celebrates 11th anniversary
of the Cuban Medical Brigade
HONDURAS, November 6, 2009.- In a theater packed to the rafters with
Honduran friends and Cuban solidarity workers, the Cuban Medical Brigade
celebrated the 11th anniversary of their presence in this Central
American nation.
November 3, 1998 saw the arrival of the first group of Cuban health care
workers carrying medical supplies and field hospitals to lend a helping
hand to the victims of the devastating Hurricane Mitch and its
subsequent effects. Since then, over 1,600 health professionals have
offered their services to the most seriously affected and seen 22
million cases, performed 108,000 major operations, delivered 107,000
babies, saved the lives of 237,000 patients and dedicated 18,5 million
hours to education and instruction, to name just a few of their
achievements.
On behalf of the Honduras-Cuba Friendship Association, its vice
president Mr. Amilcar Espinoza expressed their everlasting gratefulness
for such humane endeavor. Attending the event were political
personalities and representatives of the Honduran resistance movement,
as well as Cubans who live here and other supporters.
In a mixture of Cuban and Honduran culture, the audience filled their
hearts with music, dance and poetry. Young performers like "Café
Guancasco" and the renowned singers Carla Lara, Pavel Núñez and Gerónimo
gave a beautiful concert to those who spare no sacrifice to offer their
help, even to a country as wracked by hardship as Honduras. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba
