Letter from Felipe de J. Pérez Cruz to Freedom Socialist Party

Comrade Doug Barnes from the Freedom Socialist Party:
My views about what's going on in Cuba today are published in Cuba Socialista,
Rebelión, Aporrea, La Polilla and other sites. I'm a conscientious member of the
Communist Party of Cuba who agrees both with its tenets and the program of
measures set in motion by the Second Secretary and current president Raúl
Castro. I disagree, from the viewpoint of the historic moment, concept and
method, with the columnists cited by Susan Williams, although I agree with her
definition of a "collection of voices". That's precisely what they are: a
"collection of voices". The author should ask herself how many projects of
change those individuals are involved in and how much work they do in our
revolutionary organizations and institutions to build in practice with the
solutions and changes they demand.
This small choir of "voices" comes very handy to those who live far from Cuba
and those who oppose the ideological and political positions of the Communist
Party of Cuba. They try again and again to understand, on the basis of their
stagnant Stalinist prejudices, as they can use them to back up their
lucubrations. Such is the problem, in essence, with Susan Williams' article.
The individuals in that "collection of voices" publish
as their own the ideas and discussions now taking place in my country as part of
the torrent of great and very rich contradictions we find at the core of any
Revolution. I consider myself to be a part of that revolutionary torrent of
people who support the ongoing efforts made by the party leadership and the
government, since I believe they are right and to the point. I am also someone
who disagrees with certain decisions and policies, criticizes what's wrong and
offers solutions within the framework provided by the Revolution itself, which
we try to expand to counter bureaucracy and other systemic, if human, flaws. Of
course, our hard daily struggle, often exhausting and at times heartbreaking but
always beautiful, needs no publicity, nor is it carried out to please an
audience of readers. It's an all-out war against mistakes made by and faults of
other people as much as against our own. Unfortunately, there are some who
neither can nor want to see beyond what they believe they have before their
eyes. There are some who become so smug when they see their work in writing and
get some renown that they even deny themselves and their own history. I know
what I'm talking about because I've had discussions, both private and public,
with some of those people from the "collection of voices".
I read the Freedom Socialist Party's 2003 declaration
on Cuba and, the way I see it, it's plain to me that you neither have all the
information you need nor are able to grasp Cuban politics. About this and other
matters we can exchange works. Find herein part of what's been published, which
you could perhaps translate and make available to your members.
It would also been very interesting to know what
you're doing in your country. Working within the Empire must be quite a feat.
Everything you can do against capital and for the unity and revolutionary
awareness of the American workers and people, and everything you can do against
warmongering and the military invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and to stop the
plans to topple Venezuela, Bolivia and the ALBA nations and to bring legality
back in Honduras, would be, among many others, steps in solidarity with and
support of all those who fight against imperialism around the world. Condemning
the unjust and cruel imprisonment of the five Cuban patriots who fight terrorism
and exposing how the criminal blockade policy remains intact behind Obama's
siren song are internationalist missions to which we know our friends and
comrades in the U.S. are fully committed. Therefore, it would be extremely
interesting to know details about the way the Freedom Socialist Party works in
this connection.
I believe a debate with people who hold other
positions and views is always important, so I would be glad to receive your
material. And I'm talking about a debate based on respect and friendship, as
befits comrades who share the same revolutionary ideas. I'm not interested in
exchanging anything with those who attack my Party with groundless accusations
and disparaging epithets, as Williams does. Such inconsiderate and belligerent
language against those who have been making a revolution in Cuba for fifty years
is simply unacceptable, as it brings division and plays into our enemies' hands.
The historic experience of socialism for most of last century is enough to
advice change. Let's have a critical dialogue as comrades in the difficult but
always passionate struggle for World Revolution.

Mis criterios sobre la hora
cubana actual están publicados en Cuba Socialista, Rebelión, Aporrea, la Polilla
y otros medios de la red. Milito conscientemente en las filas del Partido
Comunista de Cuba y coincido con la línea general de mi Partido, y con el
programa de medidas que lleva adelante el segundo secretario y actual presidente
Raúl Castro. Discrepo tanto en sentido del momento histórico, concepto como en
método, de los articulistas que cita Susan Williams, aunque coincido con la
autora en su definición de "una colección de voces". Si eso precisamente son
estas personas: "una colección de voces". Pregúntese la autora en cuántos
proyectos de cambio están estas personas, cuánto trabajan en las organizaciones
y las instituciones revolucionarias, para construir en la concreta de la vida
las soluciones de esos cambios que solicitan.
Para quienes están distantes geográficamente de Cuba, para quienes no coinciden
con las posiciones ideológicas y políticas del Partido comunista cubano, y una y
otra vez nos quieren leer por sus prejuicios de estalinismo trasnochados, ese
pequeño coro "de voces" le viene como anillo al dedo para fundamentar sus
elucubraciones. Este es el problema de esencia que observo en el artículo de
Susan Williams.
Las personas de la "colección de voces" publicitan como suyas ideas y debates
que hoy transcurren en mi país como parte del torrente contradictorio y
riquísimo de toda Revolución. Me considero parte de ese torrente revolucionario
que apoya porque los considera lucidos y correctos, los esfuerzos que se hacen
por la dirección del Partido y el Gobierno, y que también discrepa de
determinadas decisiones y políticas, critica, denuncia lo mal hecho y propone
soluciones dentro del espacio que da la propia Revolución, ampliando
precisamente ese espacio frente a burocratismos y otras deficiencias sistémicas
y humanas. Claro está que esta lucha diaria, dura, a veces agobiante, otras
desgarrante, pero siempre hermosa, no precisa de publicidad, ni se hace para
complacer a un auditorio de lectores. Es un combate en todas las dimensiones,
contra los errores e insuficiencias de otros, y contra nuestros mismos errores e
insuficiencias. Desafortunadamente hay quienes no quieren ni pueden ver más allá
de lo que creen que tienen frente a sus ojos. Hay a quienes la letra impresa y
la caricia de la publicidad, los hace tan petulantes, que llegan a negarse a sí
mismos, a su propia historia. Se lo que digo porque he debatido con varias de
estas personas de la "colección de voces", tanto a nivel privado como público.
He leído la declaración de Freedom Socialist Party sobre Cuba del 2003 y es
evidente desde mi punto de vista, que ustedes no tienen toda la información, ni
comprenden la política cubana. Sobre este y otros puntos podemos intercambiar
trabajos. Les envío algo de lo publicado, quizás puedan traducirlo y ponerlo a
disposición de su militancia.
También será muy interesante conocer qué hacen ustedes en su país. Trabajar
dentro del imperio no es tarea fácil. Todo lo que ustedes logren avanzar en
contra del capital, por la unidad y concientización revolucionaria de los
trabajadores y el pueblo estadounidense, todo lo que logren contra la política
belicista, contra la agresión militar en Irak y Afganistán, por parar los planes
contra Venezuela, Bolivia y los países del ALBA, por la vuelta de la legalidad
en Honduras, todas estas y muchas más, son misiones de solidaridad y apoyo
concreto a todos los que luchamos contra el imperialismo en el mundo. La
denuncia de la injusta y cruel presión de los cinco patriotas antiterroristas
cubanos, el desenmascarar cómo detrás de los cantos de sirena de Obama, sigue
intacta la política criminal del bloqueo, son misiones internacionalistas, en
las que sabemos que nuestros amigos y compañeros en los Estadios Unidos, se
emplean a fondo. Conocer en detalle cómo trabaja Freedom Socialist Party en todo
este universo nos resultaría sumamente interesante.
Pienso que el debate con otros puntos de vista, con otras posiciones, siempre es
importante, por lo que no tengo inconveniente en recibir vuestros materiales. Si
me refiero a un debate respetuoso y camaraderil, como corresponde a compañeros
de ideas revolucionarias. No me interesa intercambiar absolutamente nada con
quienes ataquen a mi Partido con acusaciones infundadas y epítetos denigrantes,
como es el caso de Williams. Ese lenguaje beligerante y desconsiderado contra
quienes llevan cincuenta años haciendo Revolución en Cuba, para mi es
inadmisible. Nos divide y le hace un flaco favor a los enemigos.
La experiencia histórica del socialismo en el pasado Siglo XX es suficiente para
aconsejarnos cambiar. Dialoguemos críticamente como compañeros en la difícil y
siempre apasionante lucha por la Revolución Mundial.
