Santiago Alvarez: I'm stronger every day in my principles

"All I did these years in prison is making me feel proud of my community every day and makes me feel stronger physically and mentally. My goals are becoming stronger," said anti-Castro militant Santiago Alvarez.

Alvarez was freed Wednesday after being detained for nearly a year after conviction for storing weapons and refusing to testify against colleagues. The authorities requested his deportation.

Alvarez and his co-defendant, Osvaldo Mitat, pleaded guilty in September 2006 of conspiring to possess illegal weapons. Both contended that the weapons were to help fight the totalitarian government of Fidel Castro, not to harm the United States.

"All my future plans revolve around the freedom of Cuba and the struggle for human rights. I want to help at all times to the dissidents," Alvarez said.

"Lo único que lograron estos años de cárcel es hacerme sentir orgulloso de mi comunidad y hacerme sentir cada día más fuerte físicamente y mentalmente. Mis principios están cada día más fuertes", explicó el militante anticastrista Santiago Alvarez.

Alvarez fue liberado el miércoles después de haber estado detenido por casi un año tras sus sentencias por almacenar armas y negarse a testificar contra un colegas. Las autoridades solicitaban su deportación.
