The right on
the offensive

The ascent of Barack Obama to
the presidency of the United States and the weak measures he has tried
to implement to favor the social situation of the country’s population
has caused a strong reaction inside right-wing American organizations,
including some Cuban exile figures.
It cannot surprise us to know that Obama is being accused of trying "to
socialize" health services or that some say there is a certain "leftist"
tendency in some measures having to do with education. At a certain
point, Richard Nixon was accused of being a communist and a right-wing
organization was the one who organized the failed attack against Ronald
Reagan’s life. These kinds of accusations in the United States can be
considered normal when the interests of the most reactionary classes in
power are endangered.
Among the right-wing radical
organization ideologists who stand out today is Glen Beck, a well-known
commentator and program host of the Fox News television chain.
Frequently Beck has said Obama is a "racist", and that he wants to
create a government of socialist trend in the United States. On
occasions he has even accused him of "corruption."
Beck and his followers organized a demonstration in Washington, D. C. on
September 12. They chose this date on purpose, because they also say the
Obama administration is treating terrorists "weakly" and that this can
cause further attacks in American soil. This demonstration was called
"Project 9/12."
"Project 9/12", according to
Beck, was intended to revive the same “patriotic unity" that existed
after the September 11 attacks. Another of its objectives was to
recapture lost religious values. The strategy of the project was to
maintain a constant attack against its opponents until they can "corner
them". The project was presented as an opportunity to fight for freedom
and against slavery. Project followers have recently orchestrated
violent protests in city hall meetings held in several cities and towns.
Another organization involved in
strengthening the right-wing, which also got involved in the September
12 demonstration is one called “Freedom Works" under the direction of
Dick Armey. Armey was leader of the Republican majority in Congress and
is now main manager of a group of legislative chamber lobbyists. This
organization has made Project 9/12's objectives its own.
Project 9/12 was financed by work groups of different corporations, by
the Republican Party Action Committee, by the think tank of the National
Taxpayers Union, and by the Tea Party Patriots, an organization which
tries to take off from the protests made by colonists against England
before the war of independence.
The Heartland Institute and the Competitiveness Institute, whose
objective is carrying out investigations financed by big corporations to
prove "smoking doesn't damage health" or that "global warming doesn't
exist” also financed the project. Exxon Mobil, Koch Industries, the
Union of Conservative Americans and the lobbying firm of David Keene,
which represents health sector company interests in Congress, were also
supporters. Some managers in the National Rifle Association have
disagreed with the measures proposed by Obama and have pledged their
participation in any financing or necessary action for the project.
The Project received secret funds from extreme-right organizations
including the Patriotic Citizens, Grassfire, and Resistance, all opposed
to Obama’s "socialist" agenda. Resistance uses the (false) argument that Obama
is a Muslim against him saying he is against the Jews. Others, like Our
Country Deserves the Best, in their propaganda, compare Obama to Hitler.
Some Congressmembers that can be described as conservative or right-wing
have had a favorable attitude towards the demonstration the Project
organized. They are the representatives of Georgia, Tom Price; of
Indiana, Mike Penser; of Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn; of Georgia, Phil
Gingrey and of South Carolina, Jim De Mint.
The American right-wing is moving quickly to show a strong and united
front against Obama’s aspirations, branding the lukewarm measures
intended to mend the cracks in the American capitalist system as
"socialism" and "leftist". This demonstrates that they are not in the
least willing to give in to the system’s least-favored ones.
