He accepted with a soldier’s loyalty when [Nicaguan President] Daniel
Ortega presented his proposas as a candidate for president of the UN
General Assembly, and with that same loyalty Brookman Miguel D'Escoto
will serve "under the orders "of Nicaragua when his term is completed in
a few days.
A man of peace-loving faith and a revolutionary, he came to the glass
palace which houses the UN headquarters carrying all that, which can be
summarized simply, "The commitment to the cause of the excluded, that is
the essential part of my rationale as priest Sandinista activist”.
I confess with the same calm voice of a priest who has international
plenaries shaken from his years as Foreign Minister of the FSLN
government in the 80s. Then his words radiated from the podiums
denouncing imperialist aggression against the land of Sandino. And he
was a worthy representative in the legal battle which was won against
Yankee arrogance at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Now, it passes through the ownership of the Assembly General left
unpublished a period full of actions for the dispossessed.
Stella Calloni, the shrewd,
combative and tireless journalist from Argentina seeks to greet him when
Father D'Escoto, as he is known, just presented his book
Anti-Imperialism and Nonviolence. But he still is dealing firmly
and, while waiting, she unravels memories of shared struggle that arises
between the hunger strike he ruled in
the 80s and she assumed, among other colleagues, for support it.
Dressed in his white guayabera and smiling, the gentle, D'Escoto at last
manages to steal a moment from guests who seek an exchange, and talks
with JR.
- Do you think you could fulfill the purposes for which assumed
Protempore presidency of
the General Assembly?
"I assumed it with the express desire to fight with all my strength to
defend the interests and rights of the
worst off land. I feel
confident that no stone has been left unturned in defense of those
rights. Yes: I wished for greater progress, although I must admit that
almost never in any year of the United Nations history, has much
progress been made. So I'm happy
but not satisfied. We always want more and not just declarations and
resolutions, taking action toward the eradication of poverty is not only
unacceptable but which is also inexcusable. The struggle continues.
"Precisely, one of the initiatives that marked its term is the
Conference convened to discuss the causes and solutionsof the crisis.
How do you see it?
"Well, it was probably the most important conference in the history
United Nations, and it was a success because it achieved therecognition
of the G-192, namely the General Assembly, as the place appropriate to
discuss everything related to the new international financial and
economic architecture . But the achievement is now going to depend on
what is called follow-up which will depend on the member countries. There
are many governments in the world that although need for change and lost
all hope, and do not give the battles. The battles must be fought,
because one can not be taken for defeated before. That's one problem:
with so much disappointment, many as they have lost the hope that it can
get. I wish everyone involved the most.
"You have spoken of the unprecedented situation that Latin America
and the possibility of realizing the dream of Bolivar. Can the region
further progress? Do you see new dangers?
"On the road of unity and eventual integration, ALBA must move forward.
There is a saying: "It is not
going to heaven Cadillac. No, not achieved the goals we wish
without a fight, the road is bumpy and difficult, but we have here in
our brother Fidel, who is an example that the struggle must continue, an
example of perseverance and struggle to heroic levels. That is the
model.
- How far or close is the reconquest of multipolarity in the global
relations?
"I think part of what emboldened the Empire was that they thought that
we'd move from bipolarity to unipolarity, and that there we'd stay on
indefinitely, that they would accommodate the change for us to stay
there for a century. And the unipolarity lasted no more than 15 years.
Not anymore, we are in the multipolarity, and that is very important to
us. The rule already not be the same, will have the same desires and
dreams of domination planetary going to take a while to accept the fact
that it no longer; but as we, for example in Latin America, we go
joining the Powers who would mistreat or treat in an unacceptable way,
and they will not dare.
- What events allow you to say that we are on the multipolarity?
- Obviously! Look, China is a reality that the empire has to taken into
account. Remind yourself of that incident in 2001 in which the Chinese
shot down an American spy plane and recognize that yes, but they had
always done aerial espionage against China and continue. We require the
Chinese to return the plane, and China tells them they are going to
return in matchboxes after I've analyzed, and we will do better than
you. And States U.S. can not do anything. Clearly it can not, not
anymore. There is many examples to consider. India, even Brazil, Russia
certainly, and all emerging economies. The world is different. And over
the next ten years will be even more developed that multipolarity.
- How do you feel this return of the FSLN government?
"Although the opposition is desperately trying to prevent progress, this
period is drawing a lot in the first part the government of the
Revolution 80. Then there was a war. Now there's a media war, but the
process is building heavily in programs such as Zero Hunger, Zero Usury,
Streets for the people, the housing plan, even though we are a poor
country. The sorry people, there is a big change. The peasantry is being
account and is more aware than ever. I think we're good. Daniel is as
committed as ever. It is the highest statesmanship and Nicaragua's
political leader has had in its history, and is now raising our country.
- What immediate plans now have you now that the General Assembly is
now concluding?
"Look, I have several things, but it all depends. As I comes, I
reported. I am a Sandinista soldier lower orders our commander.

van a atrever.
me reporto.
Comandante. |
