When death isn’t menacing By Raquel Marrero Yanes A CubaNews translation by Giselle Gil. Edited by Walter Lippmann. Fifteen summers ago terror absorbed a family’s happiness. It was the home of Lieutenant Major Roberto Aguilar Reyes, who was murdered by Leonel Macía González. This criminal was later received in Miami with honors and lives there today with total impunity. roberto aguilar reyes was honored post mórtem with the antonio maceo order to valor. According to the other members of the crew, on August 8, 1994 an auxiliary ship of the Cuban War Marine was stolen in Mariel, Havana province. It was an act of piracy and young Aguilar was treacherously killed by surprise. He was sitting on the stern. He fell to the water deadly wounded. The murderer and kidnapper – a member of the crew - threatened the sailors and forced them to sail to La Arenera pier. There a group of approximately 30 people boarded the ship. A few meters from the coast, the murderer forced the three sailors to jump in the water, and then sailed towards the exit of the Mariel bay. The officer’s body couldn’t be found at first. After more than 40 hours of intense search, the lieutenant's body surfaced. He had two wounds: one in the head and another in the abdomen. The people mourned the loss of yet another son who left behind a hero's record in the performance of his duty. This was one more in the long list of aggressions against our Homeland since the victory of the Revolution. In spite of all these crimes, Cubans don't give up and we hope some day all the murderers will be brought to justice. After 15 years, Roberto's family claims justice. For them, August is a time of sad memories. http://www.granma.cubaweb.cu/2009/08/08/nacional/artic07.html |
