Love is not only for the movies

Teenagers must be more responsible than ever, .
as few of them are aware that love and affection
are different things.

A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.

I woke up this morning thinking of a phrase we hear very often: there’s no such thing as love at first sight. Life has shown that as time goes by more and more new feelings find room inside us and we have to pass plenty of acid tests before we’re capable of feeling real affection for someone in particular.

So, does love really exist? I believe so, even if it now and then shows up at a bad time, when it seems, as they say, that it’s a fantasy feeling.

Love happens to all of us. It comes out of the blue, at times nagging us and getting our nerves to breaking point, the pain in our chest so sharp that we’re left at a loss, not knowing where to turn, racking our brains trying to guess the thoughts of that kind person who makes our soul tremble with just one sidelong glance.

It’s perhaps because very few people our age know that love and affection are two different things, a fact that demands us to be more responsible than ever. I’ve also found out that we’re all made of the same fabric, and somehow we learn –the hard war– to live without the person we truly love.

When we bird-dog mere attachment simply because we confused it for a deeper emotion, depression is sure to follow, falling on you like a starving lion eager to feed on your self-esteem and fondness for life.

Some think love is worthless these days and find a provocative look more tempting than a flower or a kiss, but they also say that our eyes are a window to our soul, so make no mistake: keep your feelings straight and try to tell good from evil and genuine from superfluous.

There are teenagers who go to unthinkable lengths to go out with someone just to take that person to bed the following day, while others work hard to try and find Mr. –or Ms.– Right and always look the other in the eye to see the reflections of their mind, beyond their clothes or their physique, so overrated nowadays.

True, everybody likes beauty. However, in our search for perfection we tend to become blind, deaf and mute and, accordingly, we fail to see love’s real essence, listen to our heart and speak for ourselves to make our personality flow rather than drag it through the mud, as we usually do when we’re face to face with love.

If you run away from your real self you will eventually lose your passion and friendly impetuousness. And if you get in trouble because of that, it will not be fashion’s fault: blame it all on yourself.

Use your imagination, take another turn in your life, and look only at what you really need. Don’t wear yourself out chasing after unrequited, fleeting or cheap love, and by all means never trust the break-up-to-make-up kind who always returns making promises they don’t intend to keep.

There’s nothing like breathing the fresh and clean air of a spirit in love, so wear your heart out on your sleeve and change whatever needs to be changed to make you special.

We’re all exclusive individuals, and love can happen to any of us in real life.

Much remains to be learned

A longtime reader and friend of this section sent us the following poetic prose taken from Costa Rican psychologist Mario Alonso Madrigal’s book Extrañando a DINA (Missing DINA):

I, who thought I knew a great deal about love relationships, have found out lately, without meaning to and definitely without realizing, just by looking at my own experience, my wise moves and most certainly my mistakes, that in matters of love I have still so many things to LEARN… UNDERSTAND… CHANGE… CORRECT… ACCEPT… IMPROVE...

I MUST LEARN that being in love doesn’t mean that I should become obsessed or reach ridiculous extremes. I MUST LEARN to not put all my motivation into just one person. I MUST UNDERSTAND that love should not be begged for and that having someone doesn’t mean you should live in distress. I MUST LEARN that if I expect to have an adult relationship I must behave as such.

I MUST ACCEPT that love -much like everything else in our life– involves setbacks, falls and pain, and that fear can only make things worse. I MUST LEARN that is not good to overrate, deify or idealize anyone, because we are all human and I should not expect from my partner anything more than you could expect from a human being. I MUST LEARN that is good that I am like I am as long as I always respect the person by my side.

I MUST ACCEPT that now and then we need to go through great pain before we find great happiness, because sometimes you have to touch bottom to push yourself up. I MUST UNDERSTAND that the comfort of routine is deceitful, since reality is always changing and makes it necessary to learn how to deal with the natural insecurity of everyday life.

I MUST ACCEPT that a plan can fall through in no time because the future moves at will and not the way I want. If the future lets me do something about it I must be grateful rather than complain about what I couldn’t do.

I MUST ACCEPT that many a lie has been spun about love, so I should stop turning my back on the truth just to keep enjoying in fake comfort or for fear of being hurt. If life proves that I gave my heart to a humbug, I must come to terms with my mistake, cry over and vent my frustration, and then move on like a whole new person.

I MUST IMPROVE my self-esteem so that I don’t feel despised, humiliated or rejected if the one I love leaves me, to be less sensitive to abandonment, to never end up believing that it was because I’m ugly or silly and acknowledge instead that it just worked for as long as it was meant to, and to grovel at nobody’s feet as if I were a carpet on which they wipe their shoes.

I MUST ACCEPT that the fact that someone likes me today doesn’t mean they will like me as much tomorrow, and I don’t have to be offended by that... if I accept that people can only give so much sometimes, that the person by my side has the right to go elsewhere when they no longer like me; if I accept that the one I love is entitled to his or her own decisions, whether or not they please me.

I MUST REMEMBER that sometimes you have to wait for a good thing rather than spoil it by rushing into it. That’s why we must be patient, wait calmly and REMEMBER that impatience is caused by an emotional urge likely to fade away in the twinkling of an eye and is bound to suffocate the person by my side; that putting pressure on someone can become disrespectful; that it’s dangerous to take a decision while I’m impatient because I’m under the effects of an extreme emotional state when I’m unable to be objective, and I wouldn’t be voicing my truth but my impulse and compulsion, and I might just do something I would later regret. Besides, if I’m patient, waiting won’t be such an ordeal.

I MUST LEARN to not be possessive. That someone leaves doesn’t mean I lost a possession I was especially attached to. This body by my side is not mine to keep; it’s just borrowed, and its ‘owner’ is entitled to take it away whenever he or she wishes. And even if owning is safer than borrowing, I must understand that it’s just an illusion. Much as I want to believe it, that person is not mine, and therefore I can’t decide on their life. I can’t expect that they act only according to my wishes. I’m not supposed to control, manipulate or take hold of that person anymore than I have the right to decide their fate. And I should not blame life for forcing me to give back what I borrowed from it in the first place.

But above all else, I MUST LEARN THAT I WILL NEVER STOP LEARNING and as I keep learning I must allow myself to live and feel. And now that I’m just getting over the suffering caused by not even knowing that I still have a great deal to learn, all that remains is for me to shed a few tears, heave a sigh and tell myself: ‘Well, my friend… let’s start over!’

Ask Up Front
O.S.: I’m dating I girl I like and I want to make her happy in every way. We had sex without penetration and I noticed I had no erection, even if I ejaculated. Now I don’t know whether I will be able to get over it next time we have sex, since it’s something essential to any relationship and I don’t want to lose her. I’m 20 years old.

It doesn’t mean that it will happen again or that she will leave you if it does. Nor is there any need to make much of the event. Sometimes we fail to live up to our own expectations, in matters of sex as much as when, for instance, we receive a surprise, sit an exam or hold certain conversations. There are countless situations in which we never react as we would like to. Later on, when our feelings aren’t running so high, we think practically and ideally about what we’re dealing with and it all begins to work well. Our intimate erotic moments are not an exception.

We’re not perfect machines, and especially our body never obeys an arbitrary command. Our sexual response develops to our satisfaction if we sense pleasure, and therefore our body shuts down if we get worried when it’s time to have a good time. So next time try to follow both the beat of your desire and your instincts, confident that your happiness can make her happy. Choose the right time to talk about what happened, her preferences and the fantasies you would like to realize in the future. Like that, little by little, you will reach a perfect mutual understanding.

As a rule, the first encounters are anything but perfect. The lack of knowledge about each other and their feelings of nervousness make everything less enjoyable, but that’s something you can gradually overcome. Regarding her happiness, you must understand that it’s not only up to you. She must also take delight in what you can give her. So try and find out what makes her tingle and you’ll see then whether the chemistry between you two is the right one.

No quiero perderla.
