I am handed a glass of water…

A CubaNews translation by Mercedes Rosa Diaz.
Edited by Walter Lippmann.
They say that the strange woman arrived in town and asked for a glass of
water, but the residents were so busy preparing for their festivities
that they didn’t pay much attention to the strange visitor.
No one quenched her thirst, just as no one investigated what had
compelled her to climb to that remote spot in Villa Clara. It’s a place
where one’s vision gets lost in infinite rows of palm trees, and leaps
from valley to valley until it touches the silhouette of the of the keys
that crown the coast of the city of Caibarién.
From that event, they only recall that the indignant woman cursed the
town. From that point forward, so the locals would never forget to show
hospitality to a stranger, she afflicted them with heavy rains every
time they organized their festivals.
Just a legend? Maybe…but whomever visits Buenavista today does not have
to wait long to discover the roots of that story. In some inexplicable
way, it always rains in that area on any day of celebration, and even
during the street fests!
But it also turns out that today the people of Buenavista are so
hospitable, that if that gypsy woman was to ever return to the town, she
would gladly retire her watery curse.
Maybe they were always that way, generous like most Cuban families, the
ones from “the country,” as well as those from the cities, where people
live a little bit faster; but they always have time to soothe the palate
with a sip of coffee from their neighbor, and they never forget to
return a plate with some homemade tidbit.
Whether in Bayamo, Santa Clara, Guayos or the heart of Las Tunas, in San
Juan and Martínez, or in a village in Quivicán, whomever arrives at the
Cuban home during the “good hour” is quickly ushered to the main course,
or at least to some rice and beans, or bread with guayaba, or the sweet
“rooster soup,” the very same one that killed hunger in so many Mambises
in the mountains.
That’s Cuba, beyond the visions of ferocious rum, blue waters and easy
mulattas that those who know little about our island try to sell to
those outside.
Even when pockets tighten up and the pantry gets resentful. Even when
the promised economic bonanza emulates that old riddle—“The closer it
looks, the further it is…the further it looks, the closer it is…”—this
country continues to be a free dwelling for all who are in need, those
inside as well as those on the “outside.” We are buffeted by
hurricanes, market uncertainties and nightmares of globalization.
Should we relearn white magic so we can multiply the loaves and fishes
every evening? Maybe. Still, no economic
crisis will diminish our spirit as humble people who are honored to have
guests. We will share our coconut pudding without false modesty, or
dust off our best towels and make love nests with blankets that are
pregnant with mending.
Cuban keyboardists, who read the column every Thursday and who welcome
new people to our gatherings every month, give faith to how delicious it
is to share without being fussy and see the face of true solidarity.
That’s why we believe in the bettering of mankind, while some others
only think about numbers and brands. We even have a travel spell ideal
for breaking ancient gypsy curses.
It is so easy that it can be proven on any point of this super-generous
alligator. All you have to do is stop at any friendly house and say:
“Please give me a glass of water—I am so hungry that I don’t know where
I’m going to lay my head tonight.”

ciclones, incertidumbres mercantiles y pesadillas globalizadoras.
