Government authorities informed the church about developments in the investigation of the murder of Spanish priest Mariano Arroyo Merino

1-The morning of July 16, government officials informed the church about developments in the investigation, which is not yet concluded, of the murder of Spanish priest Mariano Arroyo Merino.  The crime was committed during the early hours of Monday, July 13 of the past year (2008).

2-The excellent police investigation revealed the location and led to the arrest of the perpetrator presumed to have committed this abominable crime, and his possible accomplices.  In addition to having collected evidence linking him to the crime, police authorities have acquired a confession from the perpetrator.

3-The authorities also informed us before that the investigation into the murder of Father Eduardo de la Fuente, which occurred in February, continues.  At least one person in custody has confessed to the crime.  The perpetrators of the crime were unaware that their victim was a priest. 

4-The Church is aware of the shock, disquiet and questions that many faithful Catholics must have at such unusual events as these.  It also is aware that similar sentiments must circulate among the population at large.  It is conscious of the media attention these events have drawn, and how it is playing out in the Cuban media and in the international press, especially in Spain and the Spanish church, which has always been so close and so supportive.  The Church is in the position to firmly dispute any attempt to link these cases to one another, or to give them any religious or political significance that is totally different from the reality of the actual crimes.

5-For the crimes that have been committed against these two priests—in itself an uncommon thing in our land—that no doubt have had an extraordinary effect on our ecclesiastical lives, we pray to our Lord for the families of the victims, and for the life of the Church in Cuba and in Spain.  We also pray that these inhuman acts are not repeated in our homeland.

6-Finally, as Christians, we must not forget to ask God to move those criminals to repentance, so that he may be able to bestow His mercy on those who behaved so mercilessly.

Las autoridades del Gobierno informaron a la Iglesia sobre el proceso investigativo desarrollado en relación con el asesinato del sacerdote español Mariano Arroyo Merino

1- En la mañana del día 16 de julio, las autoridades del Gobierno informaron a la Iglesia sobre el proceso investigativo desarrollado, y que aún no ha concluido, en relación con el asesinato del sacerdote español Mariano Arroyo Merino, perpetrado en las primeras horas del lunes 13 de julio pasado.

2- Las investigaciones realizadas por los peritos policiales han permitido la localización y captura del presunto responsable de este execrable crimen y sus posibles cómplices. Además de las pruebas vinculantes, las autoridades policiales cuentan ya con la confesión del mencionado responsable.

3- Las autoridades también nos habían informado antes que el proceso investigativo en relación con el asesinato del padre Eduardo de la Fuente, acontecido el pasado febrero, continúa. Sobre este crimen al menos una persona detenida ha confesado su culpabilidad y responsabilidad. Los que cometieron ese hecho ignoraban la condición de sacerdote de la víctima.

4- La Iglesia es consciente del estupor, la inquietud y las preguntas que se hacen muchos fieles católicos ante hechos tan inusuales como estos. Sabe también de los sentimientos similares que circulan en nuestra población, así como del impacto que todo ello ha tenido en los medios de comunicación acreditados en Cuba y sus consecuencias internacionales, de modo particular en España y en la Iglesia española, tan cercana y solidaria en todo momento. La Iglesia está en condiciones de expresar firmemente su rechazo a cualquier intento de vincular un caso con otro, o a darle un matiz religioso o político ajeno totalmente a la realidad del hecho criminal en sí mismo.

5- Ante crímenes como los referidos que han involucrado a dos sacerdotes, algo nada común en nuestro país, y que sin dudas afectan de modo extraordinario la vida eclesial, elevamos nuestra oración al Señor por las víctimas, sus familiares, y por la vida de la Iglesia en Cuba y en España. Oramos también para que hechos tan inhumanos no se repitan en nuestra patria.

6- Por último, como cristianos, no podemos dejar de elevar una súplica a Dios para que propicie el arrepentimiento de los criminales y manifieste Su misericordia con quienes obraron de modo tan inmisericorde.
