La republicana de mayor rango en el Comité de Asuntos Exteriores de la Cámara de Representantes, indicó hoy en un comunicado que ha presentado una enmienda para recortar en 15 millones de dólares los fondos que concede el Gobierno estadounidense a la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), que suman alrededor de 54 millones, y transferirlos a la Fundación Nacional para la Democracia, reseñó Efe. A juicio de Ros-Lehtinen, la OEA "está abandonando rápidamente sus principios fundadores". "Con su acercamiento a la tiranía castrista y su firme apoyo a Manuel Zelaya, siguiendo la agenda de gobernantes autocráticos como (el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo) Chávez, (el boliviano, Evo) Morales y (el nicaragüense, Daniel) Ortega, la OEA está perdiendo su credibilidad como entidad de apoyo a instituciones democráticas, los derechos humanos y el imperio de la ley", señaló. La legisladora considera que la ayuda estadounidense se emplea mejor "donde verdaderamente se apoye y mejore nuestra agenda de libertad". Por ello, la enmienda presentada por Ros-Lehtinen prevé la que los 15 millones de dólares que se le retirarían a la OEA serían destinados a la Fundación Nacional para la Democracia, una organización que "lucha en todo el mundo por los derechos fundamentales y por la democracia", indicó.
