A CubaNews translation by Giselle Gil
Edited by Walter Lippmann

One is getting old and I, at least, am worried that some kind of barrier might grow between me and young people. Maybe, that is why I continue teaching; young people are fresh and transparent and make one feel young again. That singsong about the good old days is the best example of decadence one can find. To understand young people’s motivations is worth a little effort; to understand the music they like and why they like it. If the lyrics of the songs they sing and dance to are complicated it’s worth finding out why, what is behind them.

In a word: one can grow old [in body], but not necessarily in thought.

And we have María Teresa Linares’ example, who far from campaigning against this or that type of music, tries to understand the popular music phenomenon as complex as it may be with the necessary serenity.

I have to admit here, and I’m not blushing nor dying from embarrassment neither, that I like reggaetón. It bothers me, as it would anybody else, that the city is saturated with it, of course. It bothers me that he city wakes up and goes to bed with it. It is played in almendrones [ old taxis], elevators, swimming pools, and stadiums. It is played out of loud speakers and out of personal headsets. But, I can also find valid motivations in reggaetón.

I must confess I like the group “Gente de Zona’ (People of the Zone) Do you know how they introduce themselves when they are playing at the “The Animal”, which is a great hit place? They say, "Do you know who Gente de Zona is? Do you know how to be like Gente de Zona?" You simply have to know the street, you have to know what it is to live in a poor neighborhood, and you have to know how to relate to people and to keep in mind that we are the people”. Excuse me, but I think it is beautiful. It touches me. For this, purists may include me on their black lists, yet. I think it is great that these youngsters sing to their people. It’s great that they see themselves as people, that there is no distance between them and the people, and that they think their worth is precisely in dissolving themselves in these poor neighborhoods. Pardon me, censors in the name of good taste or high culture, but I think it is beautiful; although I am well aware that “the people” is more than Gente de Zona’s neighbors.

Sometimes I wonder what we mean when we talk about lyrics in popular music needing to be significant. Do we mean that young musicians with their ear to the street should give us an inspired contemporary city version of the plot of Thomas Mann’s Magic Mountain? Or are we expecting Cavafi’s verses put to music?  Is that what we would call significant lyrics? Even as we protect ourselves from coarse expressions and from populism, we must also eliminate prejudices that prevents us from understanding how popular culture flows and moves according to its own nature.

There is a lot of grace and humor – in other words, a lot of cultural value – in certain lyrics that describe and inspire every day happenings. Gente de Zona has two songs I love because of their transparency and the humor with which they deal with complex life situations: “Baby gets upset” and “I don't fall in love” (featuring Osmany García). In the first one we hear, "I admit I like you, and I also despair, but you have to learn to wait, because if I leave the street I die (...) The baby gets upset and behaves like she was very angry, because at night I never go look for her when she calls and calls.” Notice what a particular way of speaking “behaves like she was angry” That’s funny. Who said it was vulgar? But, let’s study “I don’t fall in love”.

To begin with it uses a phrase that exudes sympathy on all sides: "The heart you are reaching for is disconnected or outside the coverage area". That is ingenuity, anything else is a mere approximation. Let us examine the rest: "You can fall in love with me if you want, but don't cling to me; you know I live on the street partying all the time (...) I’m not mean, baby, I’m just crazy. I love you, I adore you, but I’m crazy, I don't fall in love. I hang out with you, but don’t get any ideas,   I have a heart, but it is on vacation."

When he says “I have a heart, but it’s on vacation” it makes me laugh. I find it witty; it reflects street culture, typical Cuban wit. And, it seems to me it is literature, "my kingdom for such a phrase". Of course, behind this phrase is a set of values, or anti-values; I’m not being naïve. This subject is cloning the stereotype of the Cuban male, also an historical type. It is the type of man who lives on the street, a womanizer, who has no feelings for anybody except his mother, etc. But, in my opinion, we shouldn’t take this seriously. First of all because of that old saying “tell me what you brag about and I’ll tell you what you lack”. What’s all the fuss in making the man the object and subject of desire? What’s in all this self-praise and celebration of testosterone? Isn’t all this happening because women have gained in self-esteem and, to put it bluntly, can make rings around these vain machos? Couldn’t this macho arrogance be expressing, in some way, the impotence the male are feeling against womens liberation and that it could invert the traditional gender roles?   Or maybe, because it could at least find infinite variations in the traditional roles of victim and aggressor? I am not a gender specialist – which are needed more and more everyday– nor do I pretend to be one; I’m just commenting on the danger of judging things at their face value. Why can’t we see some lyrics as a symptom of an inverse process?

Sometimes we make things difficult and complicated. We are quick to see a crisis of values in everything, when it is merely the all-time sex game. This sex game is recurrent in our cultural history and is constantly reappearing in Cuban popular culture. When women sing they also argue with boys, they also challenge them, etc. This doesn’t mean that groups like Gente de Zona shouldn’t include other issues besides sex, they should widen their window in favor of social comments, which would enrich their expressiveness and the social bond of the musicians.

On the other hand, one has to keep in mind that this is an era of vertiginous speed. These are the days of video clips, where the erotic experiences, as many other aspects of life are going very fast, changing, reshaping…should the lyrics talk about golden wedding anniversaries, of longevity, of family relations, etc? Does fleetingness always imply a spiritual crisis?  Are they the same thing? Extreme approaches can be very dangerous.

I heard the other day, and this is an example, that a cultural organization in Cuba was thinking of promoting danzon to counter young people’s attraction to reggaeton. I thought this was a crazy idea. I would prefer that young people knew more, not only about traditional danzon, but also about the variations on this type of music that has inspired Cuban musicians today (Leo Brouwer’s variations on “Almendra” are out of this world!)   But, can anyone explain what has a thermometer to do with the police? A great achievement would be, if young people learned about the great Cuban danzon and then, went and danced to reggaeton music. What’s wrong with that? These expressions of popular culture are not only funny,  (‘Gente de Zona’ say, “who would have imagined it? You have talent, show you’re tough” or “let it be, daddy, these people are crazy”) there is a lot of Cuban sentiment in what they say and share. In the song “Cubans arrived” they say, “my land is hot, don’t touch it, the Cubans have arrived… Ask around if you doubt it, go down to the Caribbean and ask Cuba”.

I’m racking my brains and do not see what is the problem in considering this a legitimate kind of music. I am, of course, referring to a strictly musical and cultural approach. I am not referring to the dubious mechanisms some groups use to make themselves popular with their fans. If we are speaking strictly of music, not all of them are easy loops, silly choruses, like in the song “To the hospital”, one of the best in the Gente de Zona repertoire in my opinion. This is a fusion between reggaeton and vallenato. The singer says in a woeful tone typical of the latter that Maria Cristina , “is making me drink soup, so that my hemoglobin count is higher”,

Everything is not gold in Gente de Zona’s lyrics, marketing strategies or projection, and one of the best groups. I don’t know why, during the concerts, one of the boys, pulls up his T-shirt and winks at the girls. I find this very funny. But, Gente de Zona doesn’t need this kind of thing. As others, they should moderate the constant bickering and its coarse and vulgar tone including their sexual predilections. I cannot imagine who would be interested in what other people do with their sex life. They try to minimize one of the other reggaeton singers implying he is bisexual (there are other things more important than this) and the more the myth grows the more men and women adore him. This is no longer important because fortunately homophobic harassment becomes more shameful everyday, as do all other discrimination practices based on secondary human differences.

It is true that amongst reggaeton performers you can find all kinds. The question is:  doesn’t this also happen among other Cuban music performers? Is everybody else good and holy? Don’t they have contradictions, irregularities, differences?

I have come this far to state my hypothesis: to amputate people’s spontaneous cultural manifestations is very dangerous. If they exist it’s for a reason. Why don’t we try to solve the profound reasons that lead to promiscuity or lack of spiritual culture in interpersonal relations?  Why throw away the couch?* How can we underestimate the force of these cultural expressions that have become popular practically on their own, from mouth to mouth, using non-professional recordings in concerts, instead of being favored in the media?  Has anybody pondered today on the fact that a performer can become very popular without ever being more than two times in programs like Piso 6? Good or bad, pertinent or risky, this is a phenomenon that is there, it exists, and we should study it carefully and respectfully.

I don’t think we should amputate or censor anything. I think we should have the intelligence to provide alternatives to what we consider minor or temporary. We cannot forget that many of those youngsters who like reggaeton, also anxiously await the next Carlos Varela or Polito Ibañez recording, or sing Buena Fe’s song even if they have somewhat complicated lyrics. They also like Rochy or Diana or enjoy Idania Valdes’ “Menos Mal”, composed by Descemer Bueno and with musical arrangements by Roberto Carcasses, which is a top quality hit. The very fact that Rochy has now become popular after 20 years singing, demonstrates that people get tired of only one type of sonority and look for other kinds of tones and timbres.

There is a time for everything in this world and entertainment as a function of culture is no less pertinent than its cognitive one (that is, when they don’t cancel each other out, which luckily doesn’t happen often). Let’s not be exclusive in our analysis nor pretend that young people walk around declaiming poetry while rushing to their thousand occupations in modern day Cuba. Let’s not close our eyes and ears to life, or life will take it out on us and we will become a bunch of old farts trying to convince everyone that the good old days were better. Let’s listen to the young people, understand their reasons and we will see that they are neither linear nor simple. And, that they are not as shallow or uneducated as we think they are.

I don’t think that when people are falling in love today they have to repeat poems like “I like when you are silent because you are absent”. Every time has its own symbols and signs and they are no less proper or interesting. Let’s not subordinate life to models and paradigms.

Am I crazy for thinking this way? Is my heart out of the coverage area? Do I also deserve punishment? It’s possible. I accept any kind of punishment for thinking that there is real beauty in the emotions of a bunch of youngsters that are proud of expressing the feel of their humble neighborhoods. Neither their hearts, nor their muses are wrong nor have they gone on vacation. The World is big and wide. It can accommodate Serrat and Gente de Zona, Sabina and Alan Daniel with his ‘La MIky’; Bamboleo and Jarabe de Palo, el Tosco and Elton John. There is no need of dominance or dictatorships of the spirit, nor thunderbolts launched from above.

If we are la Gente (the people), and we certainly are, then we have the sacred duty of preserving and defending people’s way of expressing themselves. And, after that, they can ‘light the pyre and burn me alive’, as the Van-Van say.

No pasa nada.
