Another Day without Dad

Although recent
studies show there is a new type of father in Cuban society, some men
out there forget those little pieces of themselves
to give them affection is as important
as feeding them.
Santa Clara.- The teacher insist in the
phrase, and Daniel shakes his head and sees his friends writing the
words that upset him: "I love my Dad".
Daniel doesn’t know what to do. He
searches his mind for memories of home, of playing, and the figure of
his father doesn’t appear, not even in the family pictures his mother
has. Where is my Dad? He asks himself while the voice of the teacher
compels him and the blank page stares at him.
Luckily, other thoughts come to lighten
his mood as if discovering a friendly hand at the end of a difficult
road. He writes about the light of his life: "I love my Mom".
He is nervous. He hands in his notebook,
unsure of himself. The teacher scolds him and writes a big red F on the
page. He doesn’t understand, he has written the truth, he cannot lie,
because his father, or the man they say is his father, has never
acknowledged him as his son. For Daniel, this Father’s Day will be like
any other.
Yes, for many boys and girls the third
Sunday in June means parties, caresses and kisses, for him (and we know
he is not the only one) it is another day of yearning in his nine years
of age.
I wish this story was false and lived
only in my imagination, but although the little boy’s name is not
Daniel, he is real. He is one of the many little children suffering the
absence of this important family figure.
Divorces, separations and other "grown
up situations" unfortunately generate total indifference towards the
children. I will not quote numbers and statistics. They are meaningless
in a subject that penetrates emotions and affections so deeply. For a
mother, economic support is the least of her worries, even though it is
needed.
There are, of course, legal avenues in
our country to deal with these attitudes. But, do these legal sanctions
bring with them the love and affection the child needs? Why demand a
last name if the father will turn his head at the sight of him and
rarely recognize him with a kiss?
Although recent studies show there is a
new type of father in Cuban society, some men out there forget those
little pieces of themselves.
"I was not sure I was the father" is the
most popular excuse. But, life frequently proves them wrong because the
babies turn out to be the spitting image (and I refrain from using the
more popular phrase) of their fathers.
These attitudes are really heartbreaking
because of the consequences they bring. These children, lacking fatherly
love, have mental or learning disorders, and psychological and
personality problems that affect their relations with their environment
in the present and in the future.
Maybe many of these distant fathers
resent these words and say that I’m writing without analyzing the reason
for their behavior. But, before starting to look for justifications,
they should have a date with their conscience.
Think that tomorrow these children, your
children, will wake up without a father’s embrace and possibly this
Sunday will end like many others and Mom will be the only one to give
and receive the kisses and congratulations written about in the school
notebook.
A Conscience Kept In
Alcohol
Tomorrow is Father’s Day and I am not
happy. One could say that I have nobody to celebrate with. This keeps
one from feeling happy. Sometimes I ask myself if there ever was someone
to celebrate with. He is still here, but he doesn’t even know it.
My father lives alone. I mean, alone
with his bottle. Since he decided to drown his days in the smell of an
aguardiente [fiery water, a cheap and less-refined kind of rum] bottle
it’s the only company he keeps. And, since he drinks all the time he
doesn’t have anyone with whom to celebrate Father’s Day. Maybe he forgot
he has a son. Maybe. Can drinking produce amnesia? Maybe he’s conscience
is on vacation or maybe he just lost it. They say conscience is soluble
in alcohol.
This time last year, when all my friends
were with their Dads I was reading a book and looked bored. In one of
the pages it was written:"The best inheritance a father can leave his
children is a little of his time every day". And so, I asked myself, has
my father left me any inheritance other than the nauseous smell bars
have during holidays? Has he left me anything other than this
semi-delirious state that makes me doubt the possibility of ever being
happy, that makes me ask myself again if is possible my father has
forgotten I exist?
Every Father’s Day I’m filled with
questions: Why does he drink so much? Does he drink to forget he’s an
alcoholic? And I don’t seem to find any answers. When I visit him the
only things he gives me are a miserly 50 pesos pension and his sorrowful
and lugubrious presence. Oh, yes! There are also those long periods
during which I try to find him and never do. I think he is an absent
man. I think he lives but doesn’t know the reason why. I think he has
forgotten that every third Sunday in June there is a young man who is
waiting for someone with whom to celebrate Father’s Day.
Today, on his day, I want to visit him.
Even though he will tell me what I have heard many times before from his
trembling lips: "Everyone chooses his path in this life". Although he
always gives me the same justifications I want to be with him for a
little while. I want to feel like anyone of my friends who have someone
to celebrate Father’s Day. I have to hurry if I want to congratulate him
and thank him for giving me a part of my bodily image, only of my bodily
image.
I have to hurry or it might be too late
and he will have already started his daily tribute to alcohol. I have to
hurry if I don’t want to congratulate a cold wall. I have to hurry. (Lazaro
Jorge Carrasco, student of Journalism)
Did you know that…
Father’s Day is a popular celebration in
almost all the world. It was born by popular acclamation to complement
that of Mother’s Day
The date varies according to the
tradition of each region. According to Wikipedia, the Serbs are the
first to celebrate it on January 6th, followed by the Russians on
February 23rd.
Many countries like Spain, Portugal,
Andorra Bolivia, Italy, Honduras and Macao celebrate it on March 19,
which is the day Catholics have dedicated to Saint Joseph.
Something similar happens with the first
Sunday in September which is chosen by Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and
Papua New Guinea and with the third Sunday in November dedicated to
fathers in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Estonia.
The third Sunday in June was chosen by
52 nations to thank fathers. Among them we have the United States, Great
Britain, France, Check Republic, Eslovaquia, Japan, India, China, South
Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, and several Latin American countries like
Cuba, Mexico Chile and Venezuela.
Because this year the third Sunday falls
on the 21st the countries who always celebrate it on this date will join
the celebration. They are Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. Two days later, on
June 23rd, it will be National Father Day in Uganda, Nicaragua and
Poland.
Brazil and Samoa celebrate it on the
second Sunday in August and at the end of the year we have Thailand
which chose the 5th of December and Bulgaria on the 26th,
In Germany Father’s Day is celebrated on
May 21st.. But, there, they have an additional traditional celebration
called the Herrentag which consists of making a trip up a mountain with
carts, wine or beer and regional food just for males.
Ask away
E.A.: After I finished a two year
relationship because we were not in love, although it was fine, I’ve had
sex with two other girls. One of them was just to pass the time. With
her behavior she made me understand that LOVE is important to enjoy sex.
The other one had been my girl friend some years before, her behavior
confuses me and I don’t love her either. I have been alone now for some
months. I need to have a relationship I can trust. Someone to talk to,
someone that understands me, that can become part of my world and I part
of hers. I want to take her by the hand and show the world how much I
love her. I want a girlfriend that is my friend and my woman, and above
all, that she is in LOVE. I’ve had the opportunity to quench my thirst
but I haven’t done it to avoid going through the same thing. Is this
foolish? Am I too much of a dreamer and am wasting my time? I am 24
years old.
I do not think you are asking for
something impossible. Soon you will find the person you want, especially
if you let your ideal be merged with the real characteristics of this
person, unimaginable now and difficult to accept later.
Like you said, love helps us to enjoy.
To think you had a wonderful time and
yet love was lacking is possibly a way to misrepresent what you lived.
Sometimes we idealize love so much that no relation seems worthy of
being called by that name. Love is a human relationship and therefore
has spots, like the Sun, fluctuations like life and limps like desire.
And all that doesn’t keep you from connecting in a special way to that
other being.
Many fall in love with love and not with
their significant others. Ideals can be so strong that make it
impossible to live. Sometimes, we condemn ourselves to isolation from
all aspects of life. In this case, many need specialized help to accept
the complexity of social relationships.
We all have standards we look for in our
partner. Everyone has his own way of expressing love. Everyone has his
own concept of love. We must be aware of this to create bonds.

Sexo sentido
Otro día sin papá
20 de junio de 2009
00:44:08 GMT
«Yo amo a mi papá».
Daniel duda. No sabe qué hacer.
prole.
¿no? Y a veces me pregunto si alguna vez tuve con quién
hacerlo.
Y me
Debo andar rápido si no quiero lanzar mis felicitaciones
inalcanzable.
A veces
establecer pareja. Cada quien tiene su particular forma
de amar. Cada uno tiene su concepto de amor. Bien vale
atenderlos para fundar lazos.
