Beer, Chicken and Reggaeton

A delegate to the recent Hermanos Saiz Association Assembly (AHS) in
Santiago de Cuba said that the culture of fast food kiosks is spreading,
a culture of beer, chicken and Reggaeton. The young intellectual
associated this [cultural] explosion with the incompetence of the
institutional cultural system.
Many things can explain this phenomenon. But, it has a lot to do with
current times, new 'habits', and the fact that neo-liberal models are
now enthroned in the national perspective.
There was a loser in the Cold War and when Our America -hopeless,
without charts or a compass in the ideological seas dominated by the
reactionary- was full of neo-liberal "democracies" subject to the IMF,
Hollywood, the recording market and consumer gods, Uruguayan writer
Mario Benedetti issued a warning.
He spoke then about the gradual insertion of the "light" in the social
backbone of the region, and it has grown considerably since then. The
"light planet" (and I say planet because it really covers everything)
disdains neuronal functioning, difference, and cultural diversity. It
sanctifies the omnipotence of behaving like sheep.
One only has to glance at music hits, blockbuster films, most popular
soap operas or best sellers lists in Latin American newspapers to verify
this is so.
The "accursed circumstance of the water" [the fact that Cuba is an
island, ed.], and of other circumstances which are neither cursed nor
circumstantial, kept us safe for a while, for better or for worse, from
the intellectual vacuity of the realm of the frivolous.
But, time passed, and eagles flew over the sea, and fell, with bitter
force, on the suffering back of the island. The island is always ready
to bear, in times of economic doom, of the special period, another
burden of higher moral cost and marked long term effect.
There were people here, fortunately many, who remained untouched, or
nearly so, by the viruses against intelligence and values. In difficult
times - when the struggle was for survival and anti-values triumphed as
a result of that same struggle – they continued to educate their
children correctly.
These children were not forced to renounce the appreciation of art; nor
the ability to evaluate, to appraise. Other children did not have such
parents. But, they were able to take advantage of an educational system,
which was not eclipsed, not even during the worst moments.
However, many overlooked this beneficial shade, or maybe, they failed to
unravel socio-economic contradictions, which are not always easy to
understand, and were won over, some reluctantly, by the triumphant
‘light’ [culture].
"Fast Food culture" is the daughter of these parents. For the '"new
winners" the struggle just mentioned is at the base of what they teach
their children, their new Tables of the Law.
Reynaldo Taladrid, a person of culture and an exceptional communicator,
said Saturday, April 11, in an interview for the program “Between You
and I”, that "not everything can be rum and reggeaeton”. He remembered
how his parents taught him to know about movies, painting, baseball ...
the pleasure one might get, for example, spending a Saturday afternoon
at the Museum of Fine Arts, appreciating the painting “The Abduction of
the Mulattas”.
But, today –it’s painful to admit - such a family trip or romantic
escapade, or similar outing is, to put it mildly, unusual. And not all
the blame falls on the lack of cultural opportunities, no.
It so happens that mental canned products reign, decision-making is
cloned. It depends on how much each person has allowed himself to be
absorbed by this serial behavior-making machine. This machine turns out
behaviors in accord to the fashionable way of thinking. It thinks for
others so that others do not have to think for themselves.
The same can be said about the "Fast Food culture". It will certainly
not promote the paintings of Carlos Enriquez, yet it will provide a
gastronomical service, whose quality and efficiency, is often far above
that of the competition in national currency.
And ... Our cultural institutions are incongruously married to our
gastronomical institutions. But, let’s leave that subject for a future
commentary.

Cerveza,
pollo y «perreo»
19 de abril de 2009
00:53:42 GMT
discernir, a justipreciar.
lograron explicarse contradicciones socio-económicas no siempre
Y...
nuestras instituciones culturales y gastronomía son un
matrimonio majadero. Pero, dejemos esto para otro comentario.
