Unacceptable!

The
images that accompany this note are quite eloquent. They reflect not only
grave violations of social discipline and civic ethics, but something worse:
a permissiveness that is unacceptable.
Do those tourists even know that Marti is one of our most endearing symbols?
Would they commit the same atrocious act on a monument in their own country?
Would they be allowed to? What is in the heads of those who use the pedestal
of a bust of Pasteur like a blackboard? In what abyss is their slightest
sensitivity buried?

Just
as guilty, as those who commit these barbaric acts, is the environment that
allows them to happen. In Central Park, or in any other public place where
monuments are erected to honor our heroes and historical figures of other
countries, the authorities must enforce the most elementary norms of
behavior. Government authorities must insist on compliance and enforce city
ordinances, including the guarding of plazas and parks.
But we ourselves must also demand this. All Cubans who notice violations
like those graphically documented here cannot remain passive and must
respond. It is a matter of honor. |
