Wheedling after their allowance

“Cuban dissidents ask Obama not to divert dissidence funds”. This is the title of the AFP press release on the letter sent to President Barack Obama by counter- revolutionaries in the island, worried about the future of the millionaire funds handed by Washington to its internal mercenaries.

“If the United States government cannot guarantee that from now on the aid for the promotion of democracy in Cuba reaches with a higher priority (…) the interior of our country, then it is better to withdraw those funds and use them for other purposes” said the letter, publicly acknowledging that the so called Cuban dissidents are an appendage sustained by Washington’s money.

The document says “[it is] deceitful and scandalous to sustain that most of those resources, provided by American taxpayers have been spent irresponsibly and capriciously, except on specific instances”.

This statement is not new. The General Accounting Office (GAO) of Congress undertook an investigation, which found scandalous frauds and ‘questionable expenditures‘ of the funds given by the Bush administration to federal agencies and contra revolutionary groups. These funds, mounting to millions, were aimed at subversion in Cuba and nourishing terrorist groups in Miami.

“Sometimes this aid has served to satisfy certain exclusive political agendas, which have tried to divide the internal democratic resistance” and ”have been used outside [Cuba] for initiatives or objectives which have nothing to do with the main goal”, dissidents say in the letter to Obama.

It might seem that altruistic and ethical reasons are moving those who have lived and live still on the squandered funds of American taxpayers; taxpayers, who, according to Senator Barbara Lee, oppose the Cuban embargo.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. They shamelessly recognize that a foreign power, the same power that has imposed a blockade on Cuba for more than half a century, that prepared, financed, and equipped all kinds of aggression towards our people, is sustaining individuals and groups, who make a way of life out of counter-revolution and mercenariness.

Behind this letter to the United States President lie the quarrels and squabbles of those who live on the United States Interests Section allowances, including those who charge fees to write lies and call themselves "former political prisoners" or "independent journalists". One and all, they are wheedling after their allowances.
