The Basque delegation used the trip to Havana to plan out the future of the office A delegation from the Basque government,
headed by the regional vice-minister of Industry, José Ignacio Zudaire,
met yesterday with authorities from the administration headed by Raúl
Castro to ask about the fate of the Cuban official Conrado Hernández,
director of the office of the Society for Industrial Promotion and
Reconversion (SPRI). The whereabouts of Hernández, who has managed the
SPRI office in Havana since its creation in 1998, has been unknown to
the Basque administration since he was detained on February 14. The visit of the regional ministry of
Industry had been requested at the time Hernández’s arrest became known.
Sources consulted by EL CORREO attributed the detention of the SPRI
representative in Havana to a question of an “internal matter” related
to the sudden removal of high officials of the Cuban government, among
them the ex-vice-president Carlos Lage, a childhood friend of Conrado
Hernández, and the ex-foreign minister Felipe Pérez Roque. |
