MESSAGE FROM THE JAPANESE SCULPTRESS AND PAINTER SETSUKO ONO
FOR THE OPENING OF HER PERSONAL EXHIBITION, CALLED:

“FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL EARTH: RESISTANCE
AGAINST THE OVERWHELMING FORCE
AND DREAMS OF PEACE”

HELD IN THE ASIAN MUSEUM IN OLD HAVANA,
AS PART OF THE 10th BIENNIAL FESTIVAL OF CULTURE OF HAVANA.

English translation by CubaNews.
Edited by Walter Lippmann.

This exhibition is dedicated to all those who fought in the past and still fight against injustice and to have peace with social justice, equality and respect for the right to life, the most important human right.

I am very grateful and honored that this exhibition is opened in Cuba, where the people fought until they achieved victory and the Revolution has resisted and overcome all kinds of attacks and the overwhelming force of the imperialist blockade.

It was because of that stupid policy that the U.S. Treasury denied me a license to come to Havana. I was very disappointed, but at the same time I am so grateful to my comrades for their decision to go ahead with my exhibition and to my husband Piero, who traveled to Cuba to help those who have set up the exhibition and no doubt organized an emotional presentation.

This exhibition is also my very small and humble contribution to the struggle of the Palestinian people. In 1968 I visited Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt to get acquainted with the Palestinian perspective in their fight with Israel on a trip organized by the Arab League and the Graduate Institute of International Studies, the University in Geneva where I was doing my Doctorate. We were a group of students. I saw Palestinian children studying in tents set up in the camp where they lived. They are the men and women who keep fighting today, together with their families, children and grandchildren, against an attack which is all out of proportion, against Israel’s overpowering injustice and violence.

First I tried a poetic approach to this problem in my paintings Palestine, Tomorrow, For Eternity. I used a whole roll of canvas. My last work on this issue was Sacred Life, an individual painting I made on December 15. I returned to Washington, D.C. to spend Christmas at home, very pleased to have finished my preparations for the 10th Biennial of Havana. I thought I would have a few months from January on to take care of my travel arrangements to fly to Cuba. But then the criminal attack on Gaza took place. Even now, when I think about it, I burst into tears. It was terrible, much like the way the United States and Europe reacted, with indifference to the act and support for Israel. I felt I had to do more and bring my paintings about the tragedy of this conflict for everyone in the United States and Europe to see the moral bravery of the Palestinian people in their quite legitimate struggle against injustice. It is a matter of survival, this war they wage with courage, dignity and deep wishes of peace, but a fair peace where Palestine’s right to live is recognized.

I started to paint For Our Beautiful Earth when I went to Paris after Christmas, and finished it in early March. With this title I wanted to express that resisting injustice confers dignity upon human life and therefore helps make the Earth more beautiful.

I would like to send a message to the Palestinian people from the bottom of my heart:

Thank you for resisting the terrible force in 60 years of endless struggle. Your huge sacrifice every single day shows how invaluable we humans are. Quite the opposite of Israel, whose revolting aggressiveness and despicable violence tarnish the honor of the Jews from all epochs and continents. The continuous hypocrisy of the U.S and European governments, who do nothing to stop Israel’s actions, brings shame on all of us. By abetting Israel, they are also committing a crime against Humanity.
