The Campaign for the respect for free sexual orientation will commence at the University of Havana The 2009 “Campaign for the respect of free sexual orientation” will commence at the University of Havana on Thursday March 26 in the University of Havana FEU Student House, with a conversation about the subject with university students starting at 5 PM.

What is homophobia?
The word homophobia was used for the first time – although with a more narrow meaning – in 1971 by U.S. psychologist George Weinberg. It is a combination of the Greek word fobia (fear), and the Greek prefix homo (equal, the same). The term homophobia refers to the aversion, hatred, fear, prejudice or discrimination against homosexuals (lesbians and gays). These ideas and feelings are extended to other expressions of human sexuality different from heterosexuality. Consequently, biphobia is designated when they occur against bisexuals (erotic orientation toward both sexes) and transphobia when it’s against the transgendered (transvestites and transsexuals).

Homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic attitudes are expressed in a varied and wide spectrum of practices, which ranges from silencing any mention or reference to a marked person, impeding their free development, or verbally offend them to the use of extreme physical violence. In some countries hate crimes committed against these people is considered to be a serious problem. It is correlated with and closely complements xenophobia, racism, and fascism. The 2009 “Campaign for the respect of free sexual orientation” will commence at the University of Havana on Thursday March 26 in the University of Havana FEU Student House, with a conversation about the subject with university students starting at 5 PM.

Why commemorate Cuban Day against Homophobia?

In 1974, The American Psychiatry Association eliminated homosexuality and bisexuality from their Classification Manuel of Mental Diseases. Other scientific societies in the world adopted this conception, which was finally approved by the World Health Organization on May 17, 1990. For this reason, this date has been chosen to commemorate the World Day against Homophobia.

In this context, the National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX), with the help of various state institutions, the government and civil society, have announced a program of educational and cultural activities directed at visualizing and combating all types of discrimination for sexual orientation and gender identity. The principal proposal is to contribute to the education of the entire society, with an emphasis on the family and young people, with respect to free and responsible sexual orientation and gender identity, as an exercise of equality and social justice.

The 2009 “Campaign for the respect of free sexual orientation” will commence at the University of Havana on Thursday March 26 in the University of Havana FEU Student House, with a conversation about the subject with university students starting at 5 PM.

The lecture-discussion will be directed by the Director of CENESUX, Mariela Castro, and will inaugurate a space in this place for the reflection on similar topics on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

This effort by CENESEX has the support of the UJC, the FEU, and the National Prevention Center for Sexually Transmitted Diseases – HIV/SIDA and other national institutions and organizations. Its objective is to contribute to the education of society with an emphasis on university youth, in respect to the free and responsible sexual orientation and gender identity as an exercise of equality and social justice. They also plan to develop educational activities of the National Program for Sexual Education on the foundation of the results that have come from political, institutional, and governmental work in our country.

The second Thursday will concentrate on existential group activities that provoke reflection. They could be workshops or video-debates, among other options. The fourth Thursdays will be dedicated to discussions, exchanges, lectures, that stimulate and provoke reflection and debate between young university students. Following are the activities that will take place in the next few months*:

A CubaNews translation
Edited by Walter Lippmann

Friends from Cenesex, I have been abreast of the events of the conference, been informed by the opinions of friends in one-way or another. In an educated and dignified manner they humbly and simply, gave their opinions about different subjects, of homophobia and the like. However, today pride and anger filled me when a chain email arrived in my inbox. The subject heading “THE NERVE” said it all. When I opened it, it only contained the photos of the event in the Astral theatre where a group of transvestites had a gala, an artistic show, in which, I should clarify, I was not present, but I was filled with anger when looking at such a homophobic attitude, with “the never” of the person that put the subtitle on the power point with these photos. I consider it a homophobic attitude, a boycott to all the efforts, the respect, the confidence put in place by the leaders of Cenesex in the development of programs and activities in this conference, which I consider as part of the effort that against the prejudices and hate that still exists, tries to take steps forward for the well being of all human beings. Hatred usually is promoted by repression, envy, insecurity…the fear of “those who are different,” people that need to control everything that takes place in their lives and the lives of people who surround them, people that don’t know what to think if their son, brother, brother in law, friend or neighbour is gay. Homophobia, like sexism, is nothing more than a way to protect, people put on a tough-guy or violent cape so that they don’t shit on themselves from the fear that enters them when they realize that “normal” doesn’t exist, that for each person and each thing it is different and that neither their way of living nor thinking is the “good” way…its what usually happens to people that have been deeply dogmatized by a religion or an ideology. The repression makes the universal of: if you screw me over, I will screw over the rest” obvious and this is visible in homophobia. They always expect, for some strange reason, that the sky only blesses them, as if they deserve it more than others…above all, people that don’t have a clear understanding of words like Society, Civilization, Democracy, Respect, or Equality. Homophobic people like racists have many emotional deficiencies, have been treated with arrogance or submission, have been treated like dirt by an authoritarian mother or father and have been taught that “norms are norms,” and it makes them mad to see that there are people that break the norm in half, wipe their ass with it and apply the parts of it that suit them…the conclusion is that it scares them and annoys them that others have spiritual and psychological freedom that they don’t have for being tied to stupid prejudices and teachings that only serve to make them bitter…those that believe in repression, defend it when they are the ones doing the repressing because it was once done to them…it is the trauma of the initiation into fraternity…they hit me but instead of putting myself against the person that hit me, I am going to go after the weak that enters because at the bottom I am a goddamn coward…Here is my story: At age 31 I also decided to break free from life’s paradigms and recognize myself, come out of the closet, today I am nothing more than a woman that walks through life, routine, work, alongside a child because I am also a mother. I try to be here among you, we don’t need to create a cartel or yell with all our strength, but this I couldn’t let go. Greetings to all,

We are born masculine or feminine without any possibility of choosing, we grow and develop our sexual preference without filling out a ballot with options, if this opportunity were to exist, I would bet that in societies like this one, nobody would have dared to choose anything other than the heterosexuality, that a human would choose to live with a (societal congenital defect) where you have to decided to hide it from everyone and live marked by everyone. But voices rise, voices “for the right to free sexual orientation and gender identity.” We live in a Revolution that is eradicating many social bad and discriminations that still exist in the world with full security and confidence in our social system, homophobia in Cuba will pass in the same way that racism and other inequalities are things of the past.

Ernesto / May 16, 2008.

Homophobia…a word that I would define, with the permission of Academic realism, in a different way: I would define it as “fear of man”,,,As Marti has said: “Everything that divides men, everything that separates, specifies or traps, is a sin against humanity.” Homophobia is hate and its balance, fear. Fear of what one fears or “that which sticks”…or that which draws attention…And this other hateful word, “upside-down”…Each time that someone says it in my presence, I respond “have you seen me walking on my head.” No? Then I am not reversed, I am as normal as you.” I think that there is also homophobia in the classifications that we ourselves create for “civilized” people…to define, which “forgives us” for our sexual choice. Because of this I like this paragraph that I came across on Google, a saying by a Spanish author, Ors: “he had prided himself on always conducting his life down the path that he desired, without yielding to the petty social convention nor being influenced by the accepted conventions of the dominant mass of imbeciles. And this could depend on the good luck that one has; but it had much more to do with the inflexible will to be himself.” Because of this I regret that the opinions that have been voiced up until now in this space only have a first name and don’t bear a corresponding last name. Because of this I regret the time that I hide instead of taking on the fact that I had chose to love a woman when I was 26 years old, this right. I am not a homosexual; I am not heterosexual; I am not bisexual. I am a woman that loved. I am a woman that loves. Who? That is my choice. And my pride:

Lic. Rosa C. Báez / 16 de mayo del 2008

Hi, look, I wanted to talk about this subject but in a society like ours, a socialist society, these people are being defended but should we even call them “these people” because they are as normal as heterosexuals. I also wanted to say that TV is eco-ing this struggle. But a doubt arose in a friend of mine. And the children that watch these shows, she asked? I told her that the scheduling is done according to their age and lasts until 8 PM, I told her that if we don’t do this we wont eliminate homophobia and thus would exclude societal diversity. I think that people should live their lives according to their sexual likes, without being looked down upon or marginalized. We all deserve a little bit of this beautiful world that God has created. I think that you should tackle this subject with more depth in the media, so that the people who are homophobic understand that society is not being homosexualized but that foundations are being built for a life in harmony. “DIVERSITY IS THE NORM”

 Roynel/ May 16, 2008

I think that its a great step forward to openly reflect on this subject, the sexist society we live in has not finished accepting those who are “different.” We hope that in some moment it will. HUMANIZE is the slogan and welcome it will be.

Lisette / 15 de mayo del 2008

Human beings are beautiful in their diversity. The feel of the unknown, the stereotypes, and the inexistence of laws that Project minorities create all the types of suffering that homosexuals and bisexuals have had to face. It is not just to forget that someone is a human being just because they are homosexual and this is precisely what happens, unfortunately, very often. Everyone who is sensitive to this subject, because they have friends or family members who are homosexuals, should join forces against discrimination. My grandfather always remembers when, for being black and poor, they did not let him into a Club before the Revolution. Now my grandmother can go where she wants being black and poor. This is an achievement of our Revolution. I believe that we will also achieve that one day homosexuals will be able to live happily, without discrimination, like my grandmother, who was once discriminated against, now lives.

Alaín, May 13, 2008

I want to speak about internal Homophobia, a term that few know. It’s about the fear and terror of being a homosexual and the majority of gays in Cuba suffer it internally. Its logical that it comes from the strong discrimination we face since we are born, the obligation of heterosexual standards, the fear of being rejected, the limitations on freely expressing the true orientation and not what friends and family want for a person. I know that one has to have courage to come out of the closet, but I am thinking now of the need to have self-respect, self love, face each question, in my case it was this that helped me overcome fear. Now I am very happy and I live a normal life like all human beings, I encourage my homosexual colleagues to be brave and defend their own happiness, to not lie, to not want to live a life that doesn’t belong to them if they feel that they are homosexuals, that they live it with all its value and society should let them in and see them as the human beings that they are. I recommend that they see the series Queer as Folk, after it I felt that I had more strength to continue moving forward.

A CubaNews translation by Giselle Gil

There are many evils in the world today. One of them is homophobia. It’s a consequence of discrimination, inequality and machismo. Many cultures gravitated more and more towards machismo as they developed. One cannot avoid thinking the many things today that are a result of machismo. The Bible in essence reflects a machista way of thinking because Judeo-Christian tradition is male dominant. If you read Genesis you will see my point: how Eve was created, the forbidden fruit temptation. Islamic culture is male dominant, as we all know. The “Abbakua” have rules reflecting machismo, as well as the other religions of African origin. We Cubans are a product of these cultures, which are essentially male dominant. Many years of humiliations have gone by. This is an evil eating at our society and which should be confronted in the mass media. This should be a crusade for all of us who consider ourselves revolutionaries. We can not tolerate any type of discrimination. Insults, and going against the basic rights of people, HAVE NO PLACE IN A SOCIALIST SOCIETY. We can not uphold the tradition of SOLIDARITY and HUMANISM of our people if do not do anything about it. Our country is still homophobic; we are not true revolutionaries yet. We have to continue fighting starting with our first entrenchment which is the FAMILY. I was losing hope that a better world is possible. Sometimes I would look around me and think that nobody cared that I was suffering because of the homophobia. This 17th of May has shown me that I am not alone. Today I feel more revolutionary than ever before. This is an excellent project and it is a pity that the eastern provinces have not provided still spaces for their homosexuals. It is a real pity. We must strive to extend this light of love to our whole country. I am from Cienfuegos and just as the provinces of Havana City, Havana, Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, this province has asked that activities be held to commemorate this date. But, to show my solidarity with the gay people from the eastern provinces I’m using this space to ask the proper authorities to open a space for them, too. The fight against homophobia has to be held in every space possible. I study in Santa Clara at the UCLV. This center, unlike the city, is very HOMOPHOBIC, so much so that in our chat the word gay is censored. This seems incredible, doesn’t it? A professor in my faculty reprimanded a young man because he sent an email with a document telling about a lesbian symbolic wedding that took place at CENESEX. These are the actions we have to stand up to with energy. I am gay, but if I were a Negro, should the word Negro be also censored at the chat? Being gay is a sexual preference. It is a concept THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PORNOGRAPHY. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO SAY: I AM GAY, SO WHAT? Let’s work for the right to be different.

With respect to homophobia, all I can say is that if people want to it can be eliminated; if people understand that being homosexual is the right people have of choosing what they like and what makes them feel good. We all have the right to choose how we want to live, what we like, and what makes us feel good. When the day comes that we all understand this, and I’m saying understand and not tolerate, when we understand that life is our right and that to live it the way we want to is a right that nobody can take away from us, then we will be happier and there will be harmony between human beings. Greetings.

Hello, greetings. I am very enthusiastic about this site, really! Maybe because I find this is my place, maybe because the issues discussed here are very important to me and many others. Maybe because I found my love here and we have now been together for three years. I have been reading the article about sexual rights; rights which I think are essential, and as a Cuban citizen, as a gay citizen, I wish we could exercise these rights in the same way they have been written. I am not talking about family or society, [because] it’s where homosexuals are frequently rejected. I am talking about the law, the state. I do not care what people think about me. But, I find that things, like the one I am going to tell you about, are wrong. Something as simple as kissing your partner, wherever you do it, in the center of Havana, or let’s say on the Malecon, maybe people see you and do not say anything, but if a policeman sees you? Two minutes later he throws you in the can. He accuses you of been queer, of being immoral, of being disrespectful of others, is this fair? I think we have to acquire these rights. I know you are working on eliminating these things and I really appreciate it. I think that Cuban society, even with machismo, accepts this somewhat, at least in the west. I the east they have more problems with this. But, the police in Havana scare people. I am not asking that we become a country like the ones in Northern or Western Europe, but I think we should do more. Have a good day.

¿No? ¿A quien?
