A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.

There she was, the platinum blonde girl, standing at a street corner in the dark of the night, looking like a small biscuit figurine clad in a tight-fitting designer dress. Her naughty eyes were on me as her mouth was busy champing gum like a cow chewing the cud. At first she refused to be interviewed, on grounds that being on camera was definitely a no-no. But after a while she changed her mind and decided to take the risk to prove that «she is who she is».

My question was very simple. She admitted to going to a ‘dollar nightclub’ almost every evening, unmindful of the prices any young worker would find prohibitive. No big deal: Barbie could afford it. «Let those who can’t, worry about that!», she remarked as ingenuously as Marilyn Monroe facing reporters under a shower of camera flashes. This girl was her exact replica but for the aura of legend the sex symbol rightfully deserved. She struck me as a piece of orange skin lying in the gutter for lack of garbage can, or because the existing one had no bottom.

I was upset and felt pity for her at the same time. Somehow we were all to blame for that girl, or should I say, that old woman with no history who had mistimed her life. What had gone and was still going wrong, I wondered, that shallow dolls like her displayed themselves in the great window of stupidity?

That night my pillow and I philosophized a little: «We’re not only surrounded by sea, but also by bad external and internal influences which spare no one, you included. The question is even more complicated than Shakespeare’s famous conflict, as it affects both our conscience and the possessions that condition it» (I almost began to wonder if my pillow had studied Marxism).

It was not that simple, more like the paradox of paradoxes. No matter how hard we fight it, globalization is a hit-and-run disturbance for our youth, who get bitten by the worldwide phenomenon of brand-name  products, more painfully so in our country, where there’s no domestic counteroffer capable of competing decorously with such a pandemic. You hear them speak and it would seem we have a ‘Converse’ factory right here in Havana, or our own local Audi 2009 dealer, or stores showcasing enough cellular communication technology to turn people into zombies.

Again, I’m not inventing the wheel when I say we’re all partly to blame: our social mechanisms, family, school… even when those of us who are duty-bound to provide guidance frown upon the prospect of wearing –with ample reason given their poor quality and appearance– a pair of Cuban sneakers, those which fade and crack in the first wash, and go instead for Adidas or Nikes as if we were riding in a limo.

The truth is, our manufacturing standards have remained unchanged over the years and still give us the same old defective goods, except that now they come in colorful wrappings. In the final analysis, we paid convertible pesos for a quality product that never was. However, the greatest harm comes from preconceptions we seem unable to overcome, as they are contingent above all else on people’s ability to find rational and conciliatory ways and leave behind bureaucratic views which make a very good (inside) job of putting a spoke in the wheel of the efficient social process we all want to achieve.

We have to stop believing once and for all in the goodness of the pomp-and-ceremony capitalism of knickknacks our own families imported from overseas with all their phony glamour, known to bring nothing but bills outstanding in the end, when the spell is broken, the carriage turns back into a pumpkin, and the princes return to their ponds as the toads they really are.

Toy manufacturing, for instance, is in dire need of urgent solution. Good or bad though they may be for the spirit, the shortage of toys mars the soul, opening a serious and quite undesirable rift in our midst when our thirst for hard currency makes us mortgage the fantasy and creativeness of Cuba’s future patriots.

Neither Cuban cartoon hero Elpidio Valdés and his troop, including his sweetie María Silvia, nor [animated film director Juan] Padrón’s dearest Vampires get to be the tangible rubber-and-cloth figures capable of competing with the likes of Simpson, Spiderman or Barbie when the time comes to wage the battle for the foremost terms of endearment we hope to turn into long-standing values.

I’m not saying we must take up again the noble and quiet yokes of oxen we used in days of yore, although they were undoubtedly a terrific alternative available to our grandparents to fight material, not spiritual, poverty. Many of us still have fond memories of those years, not so long ago, when we had in place the system of three toys per child with bureaucratic names we failed to understand (basic, non-basic, and assigned). Yet, faulty as those toys were, the measure was a palliative much closer to the sense of justice we all dream about. At least there were no Barbie heads walking around and preaching something our country neither is nor ever wants to be.

(¿Habría estudiado marxismo mi almohada?, casi me pregunté).
