Our struggles will
not be blacked out
Fidel participated in the graduation of the primary schools in the
city of Cárdenas. At the event 1246 pioneers received their sixth grade
certificate from the hands of the Commander in chief. Among them was the boy
Elián González

“The battle for the return of Elian
was only the first step of a battle that is ongoing; of many struggles we wage
today and that will not be blacked out”, the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro,
expressed in the graduation of the primary schools of the Matanzas city of
Cárdenas.
During the event held in the José Antonio Echeverría park 1 246 pioneers
received their sixth grade certificate. The best – including Elián González –
received them from the hands of the Commander in Chief.
“It is easily understandable that this is a very special act. I watched Elián
and felt as much as him”, Fidel said, remembering moments of the battle for his
return to his family.
“Many thoughts come to mind, ideas and memories,” he expressed, “of this story
born from so many things, in which the Revolution drew on strength to wage the
battle, to win it against the arrogant and immensely powerful empire, that could
not erase this Revolution.
“Today – he said – it is in view above all difficulties and adversities. The
truth paves the way, just ideas are multiplied and millions upon millions of
people join the ranks of truth every day. And that truth is also inside the very
United States. Let us remember that 80 percent of the population was in favor of
the return of Elián to the homeland”.
Thrilled by his dialogue with the pioneers who were integral graduates, Fidel
asked them: “Is there any graduation in the world where 1 246 children of a
municipality know what they want to do in the future? And invited those present
to go back 50 years, in a time machine, to question if that was possible then.
“I was one of those privileged to study in capitalist Cuba and I know very well
why. I was not the son of a cane cutter nor one who herded cattle or worked the
land”, he explained. “I was able to go to university and I am glad for this and
of having taken the opportunity that many did not have then.
“That is why I am satisfied,” he pointed out “that the children her graduate in
time and age regardless of the work their parents do and who are there, proudly
sharing with them.”
The Cuban president expressed his conviction that all the children who graduate
primary schooling in the country know that they continue studying to become what
they want. “Even if a child has suffered an accident or has a birth disability”,
he explained, “there are more than 50 000 places at different levels of
education and an army of social workers to care for them.
“Our concern for the future of these children, their little sibs and those who
are not yet in first grade, is and always will be great”, Fidel said and asked
himself: “What can we do to save them from these idiots and cretins who are
threatening the planet with the most incredible brutality, with crimes never
before seen in the history of humanity?”
The Commander in chief, Fidel Castro noted the many achievements of Cuban
education today after three years of applying new programs to improve the
quality of education.
“Almost one hundred percent of primary school age children are taught by
teachers with 20 or less students in each classroom or by two if the group
exceeds 20. This is the same case in the secondary schools that have reached the
level of 15 to a classroom. This is not found anywhere else in the world”, he
said.
Also he explained that 99.1 percent of enrollment benefits with a double
session. Attendance is 99.1 percent and 98 percent of the teachers follow their
students in the second cycle in a situation where two were used.
The teaching of English continues from third to sixth grade with the use of
videos; chess is also widely accepted in different grades. For learning computer
sciences, 41 educational software programs are available with a ratio of one
computer for every 45 children, a number that is on the decrease.
Regarding educational television, Fidel explained that there are
currently 31 weekly programs dealing with the objectives and main contents of
the subjects given in primary schooling. He also announced that, on September,
Cárdenas would have its own local
television channel.
FIVE YEARS OF CHANGES
Fidel explained that there are many changes produced in the country during the
last five years since the Battle of Ideas that was begun precisely for the
return of the child kidnapped by the Miami Mafia.
Speaking of the recent challenges confronting the country he referred to the
ravages of hurricane Dennis that crossed national territory days ago and assured
that natural phenomena such as this could destroy anything but, what was most
important was saving human lives. “For the Revolution, a human life is worth
more than everything a hurricane can destroy”, he stressed.
The Commander in Chief recalled the hurricane rains that came after our country
had suffered one of the greatest or perhaps the greatest droughts known.
Exemplifying the damages and recovery work after the hurricane, Fidel explained
that when hurricane Michelle passed in 2001, 180000 roofing tiles were given to
the families who had lost their roofs. However, two days ago 250000 were now
given to repair roofing.
In addition, he stressed that with the raw materials on hand much more than what
was lost will be produced. “I can assure you that with the efforts and resources
the country has, we will rebuilt everything that was damaged and do much more”,
he pointed out.
At the end of his speech Fidel read the
report card of Elián González where he pointed out his academic performance and
social behavior and concluded: “He finishes with excellent results. He is the
most integral pioneer among the graduates of the school; he prepares his own
speeches. I am privileged to be his friend”.
THE FUTURE OF THE REVOLUTION
“In this school we learned that we are the
future of the Revolution”, Elián
González said reading words of gratitude for the six years of education
received, on behalf of the 1 246 pioneers who graduated yesterday in the primary
schools of Cárdenas.
Now, the boy assured, we learned to love Cuba, its glorious history and
of its martyrs. He recalled that upon completing first grade Fidel gave him

Hero, José Martí, that was very important for his formation as a pioneer.
“Our school has changed very much with the Battle of Ideas in which we pioneers
have also been protagonists”, Elián said. “Now we have televisions, videos and
computers, like in all the other schools of the country, to learn and a library
full of interesting books”.
Águeda Fleitas, his teacher in the Marcelo Salado primary school explained that,
because of his kidnapping that interrupted his first grade studies; he had to
complete them under difficult conditions and in only two months. However, she
explained, today he graduates with very good results.
Patricia Flechilla, a notable pioneer in
the Battle of Ideas called on the graduates to continue studying, to love their
Homeland, Fidel and continue to prepare to be men and women of tomorrow, to
continue taking the Revolution forward.
In the event Olga Salanueva read the
letter of her husband, René González Sehwerert, to Elian. Olga and Ivette gave
him the text as a memento.
Also, 24 pioneers of all the primary schools of the Matanzas municipality of
Cárdenas – that included Elián González – received their Sixth Grade
certificate, the book Oros Viejos and a diploma of acknowledgement for their
integral studies. The rest of the pioneers received, from their parents, the
Diploma and La Edad de Oro, by José Martí.
Present in the event were Juan Miguel González and his family, family members of
the Five Cuban heroes imprisoned by the Empire as well as other leaders of the
State, government and student and youth organizations.

Nuestras luchas no se apagarán
Participó Fidel en la graduación de las escuelas primarias de la
ciudad de Cárdenas. En el acto 1 246 pioneros recibieron de manos del
Comandante en jefe el certificado de sexto grado, entre ellos el niño Elián
González

“La batalla por la devolución del niño Elián fue solo el primer
paso de una batalla que se está desarrollando, de muchas luchas que hoy
enfrentamos y que no se apagarán”, expresó el Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro,
en el acto de graduación de las escuelas primarias de la ciudad matancera de
Cárdenas.
En la actividad, realizada en el parque José Antonio Echeverría,
les fue entregado a 1 246 pioneros y pioneras el certificado de sexto grado. Los
más destacados —entre ellos el niño Elián González— lo recibieron de manos del
Comandante en Jefe.
“Se comprende perfectamente que este sea un acto muy especial. Yo
observaba a Elián, y realmente me siento tan emocionado como él”, dijo Fidel,
quien recordó momentos de la batalla por el regreso del niño al seno familiar.
“A nuestra mente acuden muchas ideas y recuerdos, expresó. De
esta historia han nacido tantas cosas, de ella la Revolución reconstruyó fuerzas
para librar una batalla, para ganarla frente al soberbio e inmensamente poderoso
imperio, que no pudo barrer esta Revolución.
“Hoy —expresó— es visible que por encima de todas las
dificultades, y las adversidades, la verdad se abre paso, las ideas más justas
se multiplican, y millones, decenas de millones, cientos de millones de personas
se enrolan cada día en las filas de la verdad. Y esa verdad está también dentro
de los propios Estados Unidos, recordemos que el 80 por ciento de la población
estuvo entonces a favor del regreso de Elián a la Patria”.
Entusiasmado por su diálogo con los pioneritos que resultaron
graduados integrales, Fidel se preguntó: “¿Habrá alguna graduación en el mundo
en la que los 1 246 niños de un municipio sepan qué quieren hacer de su futuro?”;
e invitó a los presentes a trasladarse 50 años atrás en una “máquina del tiempo”,
para analizar si algo así era posible entonces.
“Yo soy de los que entonces tuvo el privilegio de estudiar en la
Cuba capitalista, y sé muy bien por qué: No era hijo del cortador de caña, ni
del que cuidaba el ganado o cultivaba la tierra”, explicó. “Pude ir a una
universidad y me alegro de esa suerte y de haber aprovechado esa oportunidad,
que no tuvieron muchos entonces”.
Por eso me siento satisfecho, apuntó, de que los niños presentes
se gradúen a su tiempo, con la edad adecuada, sin importar qué trabajo o nivel
tengan sus padres, que están ahí, compartiendo con ellos ese orgullo.
El Presidente cubano manifestó su convicción de que todos los
niños graduados de primaria en el país saben que pueden seguir estudiando para
ser lo que ellos quieran. “Aun cuando los niños hayan sufrido algún accidente o
tengan alguna discapacidad de nacimiento, explicó, disponen de más de 50 000
plazas en diferentes niveles de educación, y hay un ejército de trabajadores
sociales que se ocupa de ellos.
“Grande es y tendrá que ser siempre para nosotros la preocupación
por el destino de todos estos niños, de sus hermanitos, y de los que aún no
están ni en primer grado”, aseveró Fidel; y se preguntó: “¿Qué podremos hacer
para salvarlos de esos imbéciles y cretinos que están amenazando el planeta con
las más increíbles brutalidades, con crímenes como los que jamás se han cometido
en la historia de la humanidad?”.
El Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro resaltó varios de los logros
que puede exhibir hoy la educación cubana, luego de tres años en que se han
aplicado novedosos programas destinados a mejorar la calidad de la enseñanza.
“Casi el ciento por ciento de todos los estudiantes de primaria
son atendidos por maestros con 20 o menos alumnos por aula, o por dos maestros
si el grupo excede de 20. Igual que los de secundaria, ya están a nivel de uno
cada 15. Eso no lo tiene nadie más en el mundo”, dijo.
Además explicó que ahora el 99,1 por ciento de la matrícula se
beneficia con la doble sesión de clases, la asistencia de los alumnos es de un
99,1 por ciento, y el 98 por ciento de los maestros del segundo ciclo han
transitado como maestros únicos, en sustitución del viejo modelo donde se
empleaban dos profesores.
También se continúa la enseñanza del Inglés, de tercero a sexto
grado, mediante la utilización de videos, y del ajedrez en los diferentes
grados, con gran aceptación. Para el aprendizaje de la computación se contó con
41 softwares educativos y una relación de una computadora por cada 45 alumnos,
cifra que irá disminuyendo.
En relación con la televisión educativa, Fidel expresó que
actualmente transmite 31 programas semanales dirigidos al tratamiento de los
objetivos y contenidos esenciales de las asignaturas del plan de estudio de la
enseñanza primaria. Asimismo, anunció que para el mes de septiembre el
territorio de Cárdenas contará con su propio canal local de televisión.
CINCO AÑOS DE CAMBIOS
Fidel explicó que son muchos los cambios producidos en el país en
los últimos cinco años, a partir del comienzo de la Batalla de Ideas, que se
inició precisamente con la lucha por la devolución del menor secuestrado por la
mafia de Miami.
Al hablar sobre los recientes desafíos que ha enfrentado el país,
se refirió al paso del huracán Dennis por el territorio nacional en días pasados,
y aseguró que un fenómeno como este podrá destruir lo que quiera, pero lo
principal es preservar a los seres humanos. “Para la Revolución una vida humana
vale más que todo lo que pueda destruir un ciclón”, reafirmó.
El Comandante en Jefe recordó que las lluvias del ciclón vinieron
después de que nuestro país sufrió una de las más grandes, o quizá la mayor
sequía que se haya conocido.
Para ejemplificar los daños y la labor recuperativa después del
huracán, Fidel explicó que cuando el paso del ciclón Michelle, en el 2001, se
entregaron, para resarcir a las familias que perdieron sus techos, 180 000 tejas.
Sin embargo, dijo, hace dos días ya se entregaron 250 000 tejas para reparar los
techos.
Además, aseguró que con la materia prima que se va a tener al
alcance se producirá muchísimo más que lo que se perdió. “Les puedo asegurar que
con los esfuerzos y los recursos que el país tiene a su disposición,
reconstruiremos todo lo dañado y haremos mucho más”, señaló.
Al final de su discurso, Fidel dio lectura al expediente de Elián
González, donde se reconoce su buen rendimiento académico y su comportamiento
social, y concluyó: “Culmina con excelentes resultados. Es el pionero más
integral entre los graduados de su escuela, elabora sus propios discursos. Y
tengo el privilegio de ser su amigo”.
EL FUTURO DE LA REVOLUCIÓN
“En esta escuela aprendimos que somos el futuro de la Revolución”,
afirmó el niño Elián González, al leer unas palabras de agradecimiento por los
seis años de educación recibida, en nombre de los 1 246 pioneros y pioneras
graduados ayer de las primarias de Cárdenas.
En este tiempo, aseguró el pequeño, hemos aprendido a amar a
Cuba, a conocer su gloriosa historia y a sus mártires. Recordó que al terminar
el primer grado Fidel le regaló el libro La Edad de Oro, escrito por el
Héroe Nacional José Martí, una lectura que influyó mucho en su formación
pioneril.
“Nuestra escuela ha cambiado mucho con la Batalla de Ideas, en la
que los pioneros hemos sido también protagonistas”, dijo Elián. “Ahora tenemos,
como en todas las escuelas del país, muchos televisores, videos y computadoras
para aprender, y una biblioteca llena de libros interesantes”.
Águeda Fleitas, su maestra en la escuela primaria Marcelo Salado,
explicó que el niño, por culpa del secuestro, tuvo que cursar el primer grado de
su enseñanza bajo condiciones muy difíciles y en solo dos meses. No obstante,
aseveró, actualmente se gradúa de la primaria con resultados muy satisfactorios.
Patricia Flechilla, pionera destacada en la Batalla de Ideas,
convocó a los graduados a continuar estudiando, a amar a la Patria, a Fidel, y a
seguir preparándose para ser los hombres y mujeres del mañana, que sigan
llevando adelante esta Revolución.
En el acto también Olga Salanueva leyó un mensaje para Elián de
su esposo René González Sehwerert. Al concluir la lectura de la carta, Olga e
Ivette entregaron a Elián el texto como recuerdo.
Igualmente en el acto, 24 pioneros de todas las escuelas
primarias del municipio matancero de Cárdenas —entre ellos Elián González—,
recibieron de manos del Comandante en Jefe sus Certificados de Sexto Grado, el
libro Oros Viejos y un diploma de reconocimiento por sus resultados
integrales. Al resto de los estudiantes, sus padres les entregaron el Diploma y
La Edad de Oro, de José Martí.
En la actividad se encontraban presentes Juan Miguel González y
su familia, familiares de los cinco héroes cubanos prisioneros del imperio, así
como otros dirigentes del Estado, el gobierno y de las organizaciones
estudiantiles y juveniles.
