All of Spanish and Latin American cinema in a dictionary

Havana, (Granma).- The Autor Foundation from the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (General Society of Authors and Editors) (SGAE), in coordination with the House of the New Latin American Movie Festival, began in the year 2002 to make the first Dictionary of Spanish and Latin American Cinema, whose initial result will be presented during the movie event in Havana next December.

The dictionary works as a complete radiography of the seventh art in the region. Its final edition will be ready for the summer 2009. It will have more than 16 000 entries and 5 000 photos collected in eight volumes of biographic and thematic voices, and yet another two with every movie premiered until January 1, 2008. There will be a digital version, which will have periodic actualizations with the corresponding hyperlinks and crossed references.

The American part of the project was directed by Iván Giroud, the Portuguese by Joao Bénard da Costa and the Spanish by Carlos F. Heredero and Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán.

Giroud commented Granma on the contribution of our country to the compilation among other details: "We work mainly with the researchers from the Cuban Movie Library and we made the pertinent coordination between the different Latin American nations. First we looked for all of the existing bibliography in order to make up a data base with 27 000 entries and at the same time we began to look for the possible coordinators from every country. We involved hundreds of collaborators, so we economized time and achieved a plurality of criteria and points of view that made the result richer."

�I believe that experience �he pointed out- may be used as a starting point for similar projects in every country. I am very happy because research uncovered many interesting data and because the dictionary will offer a global perspective of Spanish and Latin American cinema for all scholars of this theme and general movie lovers.�

Todo el cine de Iberoamérica en un diccionario

El diccionario funciona como una radiografía completa del séptimo arte de la región. Su edición definitiva estará lista en el verano de 2009. Tendrá más de 16 000 entradas y 5 000 fotografías recogidas en ocho volúmenes de voces biográficas y temáticas, y otros dos con todas las películas estrenadas hasta el 1ro. de enero del 2008. Habrá una versión digital que tendrá actualizaciones periódicas con los correspondientes hipervínculos y referencias cruzadas.

La parte americana del proyecto fue dirigida por Iván Giroud, la portuguesa por Joao Bénard da Costa y la española por Carlos F. Heredero y Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán.

Giroud comentó a Granma el aporte de nuestro país en la compilación entre otros detalles: "Trabajamos fundamentalmente con los investigadores de la Cinemateca de Cuba e hicimos las coordinaciones pertinentes entre las distintas naciones latinoamericanas. En una primera etapa buscamos toda la bibliografía existente para conformar una base de datos con 27 000 entradas y paralelamente fuimos detectando quiénes podrían ser los coordinadores en cada país. Involucramos a cientos de colaboradores, con lo que economizamos tiempo y logramos una pluralidad de criterios y puntos de vista que enriqueció el resultado."

"Creo que la experiencia —precisó— puede servir de punto de partida para proyectos similares en cada país. Estoy muy satisfecho porque en las investigaciones se descubrieron muchos datos interesantes y porque el diccionario ofrecerá una perspectiva global del cine iberoamericano para todos los estudiosos del tema y cinéfilos en general."
