When you have lost everything, at least do not miss the lesson.
From a popular collection of sayings

The first indication that a couple has possibilities of making a connection is chemistry: something in the other which really attracts them although they cannot explain it.

That person with whom you share your life, for better or for worse, will always have something to teach you. The way in which they do it, with tenderness or violence, depends a lot on you, on how you face the experience of love.

So thinks the Argentinian psychologist Horacio Valsecia, defender of the thesis that perfect emotional unions can exist: "A relationship begins long before encountering that person, because it begins with you", asserts the expert. For him, the ideal partner is someone who brings lessons to your life, but in a way that you can assimilate them easily, without trauma or pain, because love is, in his view, vitamin F: pure "Felicidad" [happiness]. It is being well, being enthusiastic, progressing, being creative and living in peace.

But how to distinguish true love from momentary intense passion? There are even those who come to doubt the depth of their feelings or those of their partner if the bond is calm, and they distance themselves in search of emotions and then suffer when they discover their mistake too late.

Cuban psychologist Patricia Arés, an expert in family matters, agrees with the Argentinian specialist on an essential point: One suffers from deprivations and emotional wounds from childhood, not because of love, inasmuch as such a name cannot be given to a neurotic, frustrating and capricious situation.

If someone sees their partner as "chosen" because they decided to leave everything for that person, they would have to first question what concept they have of their own life and what it means to love themselves and others.

"When you suffer in a relationship it is because something is not working well within you", asserts Valsecia. "Your partner reflects an internal state of yours in which you do not operate on a conscious level. To console oneself by thinking that the other person has many defects can be a symptom of low self-esteem, and if your emotional body believes itself deserving of mistreatment, deprecation, infidelity, that is what it will receive from the other."

That attitude can influence the partner's model inherited from their parents, but so too can a hasty and immature selection, a mistake not always recognized because of "romantic" reasons, or pride.

Positive thinking

The first indication that a couple has possibilities of making a connection is chemistry: something in the other which really attracts them although they cannot explain it. The second point is compatibility of interests in at least 60 percent of the elements considered essential to each one -says Valsecia-, and the third is mutual commitment, the conscious decision to build a common life in order to be better, but without the permanent pressure of either party to change the other radically.

Love is not the absorption of one by the other, nor is it an outlet in order to have company with whom to compete or unload our neurosis, says the expert. So, if you must impose your ideas permanently, for what purpose does the relationship function? Maybe you are the one who is not prepared for commitment, and the attitude of the other is merely a reflection of your incapacity in that regard.

Although the ego makes us believe that we endure for love, that is not true: "The partners who mistreat and humiliate us do us the favor of reminding us that we have a lot of internal injuries. Look for how to improve, thank them and let them depart", says the expert.

Such a recommendation is valid for whoever considers that "it touches" only difficult couples, like some readers who approached Sexo Sentido in recent months.

When this occurs, it is because internally there is a type of programming that leads to choosing -or rather one is left to choose- such people: as if in your core, you believe that you are not prepared to be happy.

In such cases, there is no worse counselor than hopelessness, because it leads to accepting only the worst option, believing it the only one. It is like an emotional hunger -describes the psychologist- that, in spite of oneself, leads to a solitude in which one is not well.

Valsecia advises these people to stop watching soap operas (a terrible source for programming the emotional subconscious), and concentrate on transforming their negative childhood programming about the life of a couple, beginning with external models which strengthen the idea of happiness, positive examples that lead you to think: "This is what I want for me".

Such an exercise involves paying attention to the virtues of people and not their defects, because that negative thinking creates conditions that come to pass which we fear so much, like those jealous people who end up pushing their companions toward a real infidelity.

He also recommends talking with couples who are happy to know how they achieved it: "They have information you ignore and need to know", he says from his experience as a therapist.

Manual of perfect love

If you are still not finding your better half, we invite you to plan your search on the basis of honesty, self-knowledge, flexibility and good humor.

Start by drawing up a list of compatibilities which you consider important, as much in the biological as in the spiritual aspect, intellectual and even philosophical. And then do not cheat when applying it to your potential candidates, because you will not have furthered anything!

Visit places where it is most probable that the ideal person appears and accept the "celestine" support from your friendships, but without feeling indebted to the people they recommend to you. Your instinct is your best ally.

"The main source of frustration at the couple level is wanting to change the other", says Valsecia. His advice is: "Forget the other! Look for everything that you can do to help yourself, heal the wounds of your inner child and nourish well your subconscious, because it always fulfills what it carries within", he says.

This is also useful for those who feel that things are not going well with their present partner. If you improve, the other person will also do it, and if not, strengthening your spirit will help you to break those ties before suffering penetrates your bodies or violence tragically defines the end of the story.

Many people end a relationship and move to another looking for relief, says the psychologist. The best thing is to invest time and effort in dispossessing the burden of emotional pain and generating a new consciousness to face life.

"Forget and forgive past sufferings: what calls you to live has meaning, although you do not understand it, but do not live the fantasy of believing that if someone comes along who loves you, everything will resolve itself", says Valsecia.

If you generate love, you will attract love. The person who you are waiting for exists, so that instead of spending energy feeling alone and depressed, prepare yourself to receive them.

Ask up front

D.J.: I am heterosexual. When I was little, sometimes I liked to touch and kiss the girls who were playing with me. When I grew up, I had sexual relations with a girlfriend. We had never had sex with any man. I gave no importance to it because at that moment I was not thinking about the consequences of having sex with someone of my own sex. Then I had my first relationship with a man and since then I had several. At the moment I am steady with a boy. But recently I have been interested in having sex with some woman. I think that perhaps my problem is that I come to orgasm without penetration, that is, just with the rubbing of the penis. I am 21 years old.

It would be opportune to clarify what mobilizes your interest towards females right now. If it is only the experience of frustration with men (or your current partner), maybe you should discover and confront what is happening to you.

Choosing a woman or a man for erotic intimacy transcends the fact that your orgasm is only external. However, if that is what you consider "your problem", it is necessary to think about it with more thoroughness. Observing what happens to you with men seems to me essential before making a decision.

You say you have not given importance to the experience with your girlfriends because you were not considering the consequences which now you assess as homosexual relations. So where does your interest lie: in being with a woman or assuming homosexuality as your lifestyle?

During youth, elections regarding orientation of desire and other sexual matters are defined. Many people have erotic games with others of their own sex in their childhood and adolescence without then becoming homosexuals. The important thing is not what you have done but the meaning that it has for you.

Do not hesitate to consult a psychologist if you are unable to determine what is really taking you to this situation. When you are clear on what mobilizes you, it will be easier to make decisions.
