Message from
Havana:
Opponents of
the Cuban government
lend their support to Barack Obama
From Cuba, on behalf of
Cambio Cubano (Cuban Change), an independent organization opposed to the
government, we are publicly announcing our moral support of the Democratic
presidential candidate Barack Obama and his running mate Joseph Biden.
We are making this statement
with profound respect for the American people and, at the same time, with great
care not to meddle in a process which is only incumbent on the US citizens,
whether born or nationalized in that country.
However, indifference is not
a choice: the terrifying experience of the Bush administration’s eight years in
power or the continuation of policies bound to harm a large part of the world’s
population must be left behind. To Cuba, this change in Washington could open up
a new, unlimited horizon of possibilities and become an opportunity to hold a
fruitful dialogue with Latin America.
It is easy to see that we have many views in common with the Democratic Party’s position on domestic life and with Senator Obama’s fresh approach to ways in which the United States should coexist with others in a multicultural world and turn its shared leadership into a source of positive transformations.
Senator Obama has succeeded
in delivering a reflexive, intelligent, dignified speech of integration that
encourages America to lead a more prominent role, inspired by a good neighbor
policy, international solidarity and the promotion of systems of consultation
with an eye to collective action, in keeping with the constant undertakings
typical of every free, civilized nation and, above all else, of a country as
influential as the United States can be expected to be.
Senator Obama fully understands the cultural, social and economic problems that
have multiplied today as a result of so many crises that all nations suffer
these days. A self-assured man of spirit, he knows and acknowledges that a
generous, humanist voice coming from a United States willing to aim for the
future could help formulate solutions to the endless challenges facing the men
and women of the 21st century.
As to Cuba, it is time to
clear the way for dialogue. The Cuban issue can no longer remained trapped in
the rusty trap of the Cold War; Cuba should not be put at the service of useless
measures such as the embargo. In this regard, Senator Obama’s expressed will to
have a dialogue could match Raul Castro’s repeated invitation to hold talks.
Having taken some hard knocks from nature lately and suffocated for years by a
worn-out ideology and a doomed economy, Cuba is badly in need of breaking its
clumsy isolation and moving in new directions to overcome the somber chapter of
confrontation.
It has been four years since
we moved to Cuban soil, without its government’s official sanction and under the
wary glance of certain sectors in the U.S., and started to take cautious steps
to create a peaceful independent opposing force. For all the Cuban government’s
refusal to grant us the “legal space” we have regularly claimed, we have managed
to organize a nationwide movement which has always stuck to the principle of
fighting for democracy, albeit without threatening stability. Today, several
hundreds of Cubans carry with them, both with hopes and great discretion, the
Cambio Cubano membership card.
For all these reasons, we
believe there are grounds for optimism about this change in Washington. Whatever
favors understanding among human beings is just and necessary. Just like we
welcome the European Union’s action in Cuba, we go for the Obama-Biden ticket,
attracted to the universal awareness that seems to govern their political
vision. It is with enthusiasm and absolute faith in the future that we urge all
Cubans who live in the U.S. and have the right to vote to do so for Senators
Obama and Biden, and also back Southern Florida candidates Raúl Martínez, Joe
García and Annette Taddeo.
We raise our voice for an
end to the Washington-Havana dispute that the Cuban government has so often used
as an excuse to inhibit, restrain and crush the opposition’s activity.
In the name of the future,
we declare our wish to put an end to the Miami-Washington lobbying, which has
only served to swamp the U.S. government’s Cuban policy on rhetoric. The time
has come for the U.S. to put aside all the manipulation efforts and ‘big stick’
attitudes coming from Miami and come up instead with a brave, transparent Cuban
policy.
For Cuba. For a change.

PRENSA/DECLARACIONES DESDE LA HABANA
Desde Cuba, en nombre de Cambio Cubano, organización opositora independiente, hacemos público nuestro respaldo moral hacia el candidato presidencial por el partido demócrata, Barack Obama, y su compañero de boleta, Joseph Biden.
Hacemos esta declaración con profundo respeto hacia el pueblo norteamericano, a la vez que con la prudencia de no inmiscuirnos en un proceso que compete principalmente a los ciudadanos, de origen o adopción, de ese país.
Sin embargo no podemos optar por la indiferencia: la aterradora experiencia de los 8 años de la Administración Bush o la continuación de políticas que podrían ser dañinas para buena parte de la población del planeta, deberán quedar atrás. Para Cuba, este cambio en Washington podría abrir un nuevo horizonte de posibilidades infinitas. Esta sería también una oportunidad para enriquecer el diálogo con América Latina.
No se nos hace difícil hallar puntos de afinidad con los planteamientos del Partido Demócrata en el aspecto doméstico o con las posiciones renovadoras del Senador Obama en cuanto a cómo EE.UU. debería convivir en un mundo pluricultural y hacer de su liderazgo compartido una fuente de transformaciones positivas.
El Senador Obama ha conseguido un discurso reflexivo, inteligente e integrador que enaltece y alienta un nuevo protagonismo norteamericano, inspirado en una política de buena vecindad, en la solidaridad internacional y en la defensa de los mecanismos de consulta para la acción colectiva. Todo ello es parte de la empresa constante que compele a las naciones civilizadas y libres, y ostensiblemente a un país de la grandeza que debe esperarse de EE.UU. El Senador Obama entiende y profundiza las complejidades culturales, sociales y económicas que se ven multiplicadas por tantas crisis que afectan al concierto de naciones. Él sabe y reconoce, de manera informada, y con fortaleza y aplomo, que una voz, generosa y humanista, de parte de un EE.UU. dispuesto a renacer hacia el futuro, podría servir para articular soluciones ante el sinnúmero de desafíos que encaran las mujeres y los hombres del siglo XXI.
En cuanto a Cuba, es hora de hallar el camino del diálogo. El caso cubano no puede continuar atrapado en la oxidada trampa de la Guerra Fría. Cuba no debe ser un objeto al servicio de políticas inútiles como el embargo. En este sentido, la voluntad de diálogo manifestada por el Senador Obama podría coincidir con la invitación a conversar manifestada en varias ocasiones por Raúl Castro. Los últimos tiempos de Cuba, zarandeada cruelmente por la naturaleza, largamente asfixiada por una ideología gastada y una economía sin perspectivas, nos indican la necesidad de romper el aislamiento torpe y propiciar nuevas vías que dejen atrás los sombríos capítulos de confrontación.
Desde hace 4 años que nos trasladamos a vivir en suelo cubano, sin permiso oficial de su gobierno, y bajo la sospecha de ciertos sectores del gobierno norteamericano, hemos trabajado cautelosamente para crear una fuerza opositora pacífica e independiente. Aunque el gobierno cubano no nos ha concedido el "espacio legal" que hemos venido reivindicando, hemos logrado una organización a lo largo de la isla, fiel a los principios de luchar por la democratización, pero de una manera no desestabilizadora. Hoy día, varios centenares de cubanos portan de manera ilusionada y discreta el carnet de militancia de Cambio Cubano.
Por todo ello, vemos con optimismo este cambio en Washington. Todo lo que lleve al entendimiento entre los seres humanos es justo y necesario. Al igual que damos la bienvenida a las gestiones de la Unión Europea en Cuba, apostamos por el binomio Obama-Biden, atraídos por la consciencia universal que parece normar la visión política de esta dupla presidencial. Con entusiamo y con enorme fe en el futuro, alentamos respetuosamente a todos los cubanos residentes en EE.UU. con derecho al voto a que lo esgriman a favor de los Senadores Obama y Biden, y a que apoyen también a los candidatos Raúl Martínez, Joe García y Annette Taddeo en el sur de la Florida.
Alzamos nuestra voz para que se ponga fin a la vía de confrontación Washington-La Habana que tantas veces ha servido de amparo y pretexto al gobierno cubano para cohibir, detener y aplastar esfuerzos de la oposición.
De cara al futuro, manifestamos nuestros deseos de que se ponga fin al cabildeo Miami-Washington que sólo ha servido para congelar en su retórica la política exterior de EE.UU. con relación a Cuba. Es hora de dejar atrás la manipulación desde Miami y las políticas de presión y pasar a una política norteamericana transparente y audaz con relación a Cuba.
