Prologue to FIDEL and Sports
Cuba on the map of world sports

Sports and physical activity are an important part of the political thinking of
Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, as he expressed as early as January 29, 1959.
In one of his first speeches he stated:
"Sports activity is necessary for the country...”
"Sports is a source of determination, perseverance, physical force and mental agility..."
Consequently, as sports has always been included in his thinking, he created the National Institute for Sports, Physical Education and Recreation [INDER] and devised a strategy for mass development of sports as a means of education, health and recreation. Therefore, in addition to the influence sports has on the integral education of children, adolescents and young people, it also improves the quality of life of Cubans of all ages.
The tremendous commitment of compañero Fidel, from the triumph of the Revolution until today, to incorporate sports in Cuba and bring it to everyone, goes far beyond what he has expressed in speeches or other interventions or what can be deduced from his abundant thoughts on the subject.
This commitment is guaranteed by our Constitution, provided for in Article 52:
Which states: "Everyone has the right to physical education, sports and recreation."
"The enjoyment of this right is guaranteed by the inclusion in the teaching and the practice of physical education and sports in the curriculum of the national educational system and by the breadth of instruction and the resources made available to the people, which facilitates the mass practice of sports and recreation."
The Cuban government gives special attention to this activity, preparing teachers, building facilities, recognizing the merits and disseminating sports, giving respect and admiration for all those who from the earliest ages to the eldest practice and participate in competitions in accordance with their abilities.
The development of the Cuban sports movement and the magnificent results achieved in national and international competitions are a precise result of sports supported on a massive scale. In addition, the quality of facilities designed for the education of physical education teachers, coaches and the development of sports medicine.
Compañero Fidel and key Cuban sports authorities have repeatedly expressed concern over the rise in the costly and lavish opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic games. Such luxurious offerings can be afforded by big cities only and thus, serve to influence the determination of granting the site of the games in such places. It also serves to eliminate any small towns from the running, regardless of the development of sports in their country, also any proven organizational skills or sports merit they may have achieved.
The Commander-in-Chief also criticizes the excessive commercialization that takes place in these international sporting activities, including the theft of athletes, and tolerance regarding the change of nationality, from the country where athletes are born, trained and achieve high results in international competitions. These athletes are then authorized to perform for others chiefly based on economics or other material benefits, which their country of origin cannot provide. In turn, this change deprives their country of origin the classification, or medals in certain events that then benefit the wealthy country to which they have nationalized.
Cuba has rejected doping [i.e., drugs, artificial stimulants, etc. wl] in all its forms and struggles to observe the widespread practice of sports as a means to improve and maintain health, recreation and to contribute to closer friendship and relations among nations.
The creation of an anti-doping laboratory in Cuba, denouncing the excessive commercialization of sports, the spirit of international collaboration, finding solutions to problems faced by different types of this activity and the continued appreciation to those who excel in the same, are always present in the ideas and actions of the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.
Compañero Fidel’s political determination, his real prioritization, permanent encouragement and example, have been important factors in the country’s achievements, and that which remains to be done. His ideas, which are consistently present in his statements and his personal involvement in sporting events, such as in the baseball game where President Chavez of Venezuela led his team, are colorful notes, which along with his sharp spirit of healthy competition are included among the systematic factors that encourage sports in our country.
The content of this book is a compilation of 1,848 phrases in which Fidel expresses his thoughts on sports, from 186 public speeches – speeches and reflections, from January 1959 to August 2007.
This text is very useful for research and for spreading the Commander-in-Chief's thoughts on sports. It is also a valuable and indispensable tool in the daily activity of leaders, technicians, sports trainers, physical education teachers, doctors, scientists, athletes and students.
The Cuban Olympic Committee, which is closely linked to the overall sports strategy and policy of Cuba, and follows the line, established by the Revolution, which is what has put on the map of the world, our sports activities. Not only in high performance sports but also in sports for our entire nation but high performance, salutes the effort of the compiler of this book and congratulates him on the outcome. Aware that this book provides a basis to moving closer to what Fidel has been for sports in Cuba and the world.

El deporte y la actividad física constituyen parte importante del pensamiento
político del Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro, es así como en uno de sus primeros
discursos, en fecha tan temprana como el 29 de enero de 1959, expresó:
"La actividad del deporte es necesaria para el país..."
"El deporte es
fuente de voluntad, constancia, vigor físico y agilidad
mental..."
Consecuente como ha sido siempre con sus ideas, creó el Instituto Nacional de Deportes, Educación Física y Recreación y concibió la estrategia de desarrollo del deporte masivo como medio de educación, salud y recreación; y así, además de influir en la formación integral de niños, adolescentes y jóvenes, mejorar la calidad de vida de los cubanos de todas las edades.
El formidable empeño del compañero Fidel, desde el triunfo de la Revolución hasta hoy, en función de generalizar el deporte en Cuba y ponerlo al alcance de todos, va más allá de lo que ha expresado en discursos u otro tipo de intervenciones y de lo que puede resumirse en una cantidad de pensamientos.
Ese empeño está avalado por nuestra Constitución, que dispone en su artículo 52:
"Artículo 52: Todos tienen derecho a la educación física, al deporte y a la recreación."
"El disfrute de este derecho está garantizado por la inclusión de la enseñanza y práctica de la educación física y el deporte en los planes de estudio del sistema nacional de educación; y por la amplitud de la instrucción y los medios puestos a la disposición del pueblo, que facilitan la práctica masiva del deporte y la recreación."
El gobierno cubano brinda a esta actividad especial atención, preparando profesores, construyendo instalaciones, reconociendo los méritos y divulgando la actividad deportiva, logrando respeto y admiración por todos los que desde las más tempranas hasta las mayores edades lo practican y participan en competencias de acuerdo con sus posibilidades.
El desarrollo del movimiento deportivo cubano y los magníficos resultados obtenidos en competencias nacionales e internacionales son precisamente un resultado de la masividad de la actividad deportiva, de la calidad de las instalaciones, de la preparación de profesores de Educación Física y de entrenadores y del desarrollo de la medicina del deporte.
El compañero Fidel y las principales autoridades deportivas cubanas han expresado de manera reiterada preocupación respecto a las cada vez más fastuosas y costosas ceremonias de apertura y clausura de los Juegos Olímpicos, a la influencia de los lujos y ofertas de las grandes ciudades en la determinación de la concesión de las sedes para estos eventos, lo que deja fuera de cualquier competencia a las pequeñas ciudades, independientemente del desarrollo del deporte en el país, de que hayan demostrado capacidad de organización y de los méritos deportivos alcanzados.
Forman parte también de esta selección los criterios y denuncia del Comandante en Jefe sobre la excesiva comercialización que se produce en la actividad deportiva internacional, el robo del músculo o de atletas, la tolerancia sobre el cambio de nacionalidad, donde a atletas nacidos, formados en un país y con altos resultados en competencias internacionales, se les autoriza a participar por otros, fundamentalmente por razones económicas o por otras ventajas materiales que su país de origen no puede aportarle, le arrebatan la clasificación o las medallas en determinados eventos en beneficio del país rico que lo nacionalizó.
Cuba ha rechazado el dopaje en todas sus formas y lucha por observar la práctica generalizada del deporte y como medio para mejorar y conservar la salud, la recreación y contribuir a estrechar la amistad y las relaciones entre los pueblos.
La creación de un laboratorio antidoping en Cuba, la denuncia de la excesiva comercialización de las actividades deportivas, el espíritu de colaboración internacional, la búsqueda de soluciones a los problemas de diferentes tipos que enfrenta esta actividad y el permanente reconocimiento a los que se destacan en la misma, están presentes siempre en las ideas y acciones del Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro.
La voluntad política, la priorización real, el estímulo permanente y el ejemplo del compañero Fidel, han sido factores importantes en lo alcanzado y en lo mucho que aún está por alcanzarse. Su pensamiento, que de modo sistemático ha estado presente en sus intervenciones, su participación personal en los eventos, como en el encuentro de béisbol con el equipo dirigido por el presidente Chávez de Venezuela, son notas que con su colorido y agudo espíritu de sana competencia deportiva han estado como factor sistemático en el estímulo al deporte en nuestro país.
El contenido del presente libro es una compilación de 1 848 frases en las que Fidel expresa su pensamiento sobre el deporte, hechas públicas en 186 discursos, intervenciones y reflexiones a partir de enero de 1959 hasta agosto de 2007.
Este texto es de gran utilidad para la investigación y generalización del pensamiento deportivo del Comandante en Jefe e instrumento valioso e imprescindible en la actividad diaria de dirigentes, técnicos, instructores deportivos, profesores de Educación Física, médicos, científicos, atletas y estudiantes.
El Comité Olímpico Cubano, estrechamente vinculado a la estrategia y la política general del deporte en Cuba y seguidor de la línea establecida por la Revolución, que es la que ha puesto en el mapa del mundo la actividad deportiva en nuestro país tanto en el deporte para todo el pueblo, como en el deporte de alto rendimiento, saluda el esfuerzo del compilador y le felicita por el resultado, consciente de que este libro constituye una base para poder acercarse a lo que ha sido Fidel para el deporte en Cuba y el mundo.
