Faking orgasm: who’s fooling who?

Constrained to show her pleasure lest the man’s ego be hurt, a woman goes to any lengths to have an orgasm. Well, two can play that game.

A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.

Mónica is a middle-aged woman in distress: it used to be so hard for her to reach orgasm during intercourse that she often faked it to finish sooner without hurting her partners’ self-esteem.

They never realized she was pretending, those men. «Not even those who boasted of being experts», she says. Now she’s with someone she silently liked for some time and with whom she has managed to have orgasms now and then. «He doesn’t believe me, though, because he knows about that old habit of mine», she says regretfully.

Is there any way to make a man tell a faked orgasm from a real one?, Mónica wonders, as do a large number of men in letters they have sent in the last few years… but the mere thought that such a ‘lie detector’ may exist sends shivers down many women’s spines, having become habitual pretenders, convinced that the bliss of true climax will always be out of their reach.

Two or three decades ago, female orgasm ranked low on most men’s erotic consciousness. Things have changed today, but we’ve somehow moved from extreme indifference to the agony of rating our performance on the basis of our partner’s physical satisfaction.

A woman who feels under pressure to externalize her pleasure tries to have an orgasm to reinforce her partner’s manhood rather than achieve her own delight, but when she lacks either the ability or the maturity to talk about it play-acting will be her choice in 70% of the cases.

Aware of that likelihood, some modern men put a huge amount of effort into the task of picking out an anorgasmic woman and thus engaged themselves in a cat-and-mouse game which spoils their chance to discover ‘the exact point when love explodes’.

Deep down, the reason is a great hole in the communication grid, considering that couples should aim beyond any organic indicators of a female’s sexual response –which do exist– and focus instead on the proper tools to have a successful relationship, namely patience, self-esteem, mutual commitment and freedom to talk about each other’s fantasies, or else they will neither realize that sex calls for ‘teamwork’ nor see in orgasm a profoundly spiritual experience where the trip can be enjoyed as much as the final destination, or even the possibility to enrich the ‘after’, as nothing compares to the great pleasure of clasping one another in a close embrace of satisfaction.

The map of pleasure

Orgasm is known to switch off key portions of the human brain closely linked to emotions that also take part in sexual activity, such as fear or anxiety.

Embarrassment about displaying one’s sexuality, fear of what people will say if you perform poorly, trauma caused by rape or sexual abuse (especially in childhood), inhibition resulting from family education, the worry that you might be "caught in the act" or do something that may hurt your partner, shyness of telling what you like, let alone how you like it and where… these are all thoughts a woman’s brain mechanisms will be hard pressed to overcome. When pushed by her partner or just to get it over with, she ends up faking what she believes or knows to be an orgasmic reaction.

If things don’t flow in a natural manner, any excess in bed can lead a woman to feel tired and boost her tendency to anorgasmia, turning to deception as an effective way out of uncomfortable situations.

That’s why it’s important that both members get to know, in general, how a female body works, particularly the physical mechanisms that fuel her arousal. Thinking all women "function" the same way is one of men’s most common mistakes. This is so even if the former is partly to blame, too, because many of them expect a man to hit her right buttons without giving him the slightest hint, and then gets frustrated when he fails.

Were the vagina as sensitive as many people believe, no pregnant woman would survive the excruciating pain caused by vaginal dilation during labor.

In its wisdom, nature allocated more than 8,000 nerve endings to the clitoris –an organ destined exclusively to sexual pleasure, located at a safe distance from the birth canal– albeit it set aside some of these supersensitive fibers to the front part of the vaginal opening, home to the so-called G-spot.

Likewise, the "remote control" that unleashes the hormones of desire can be as far away as in the breasts, ears, nape or toes. In light of what we know today about sexuality, a man who skips the steps to stimulate his female partner in that special way she appreciates so much should hardly be taken by surprise if she has no orgasms or pretends she does.

Even for the same woman, the number of minutes to be devoted to that task varies according to the circumstances, her mood and the last time when she had sex. But when it comes to climaxing, many attach as much importance to foreplay as to penetration itself, sometimes even more, virtually a challenge to a man’s imagination and stamina.

Men too

Contrary to popular belief, men can fake in bed too. Colombian urologist and sexologist Alonso Acuña polled over 1,600 males between 40 and 70, 13% of whom admitted having faked ejaculation at least once in order to pass the sexual test "with flying colors".

Men resort to this ejaculatory inhibition especially when they try to stretch out the sexual act for the woman’s benefit, or when he's not exactly in good shape, for instance, following a drinking bout or as a result of a drug’s side effects. It might be because of stress, exhaustion, disease, anger, anxiety and, last but certainly not least, fear of not "making the grade." Other reasons could be his pretense at being multi-orgasmic, the fact that he has multiple partners and needs therefore to "hold his fire", an attempt to conceal his lack of erection, or that he’s afraid of getting the woman pregnant and thus prefers to ejaculate outside her vagina without being noticed.

At 60, a man’s nervous system begins to lose sensitivity, and sometimes he just won’t ejaculate no matter how hard he tries. But when he refuses to come to terms with that fact, he decides to pretend, particularly in chance sexual encounters.

In short, we’re not born with a training manual thrown in, so making the most of our "built-in capacity" depends largely on our interest in getting through to those around us and devoting ourselves heart and soul to learning by trial and error, the method that helped so many geniuses stumble upon the greatest breakthroughs in the history of human development.

Between 8 and 20 seconds

During orgasm, a woman’s breathing rhythm becomes more labored, her areolas swell and take on a pinkish color, her chest and necks reddens, and her pupils dilate. She thrusts her pelvis upward and accelerates her movements, and sometimes secretes something different to her vagina’s initial lubrication.

All this can come along with either faint sighs or moans, screams or obscene language (coprolalia) that last any time between 8 and 20 seconds. The ability to perceive such subtle changes –which vary from one woman to another and occur in so many diverse spots on her body– means that the man should go about the sexual act as if it were an experiment "from the outside" and get an emotional distance on it without losing his own excitement or slowing down his actions to arouse the woman properly until the right moment comes when she’s ready to climax. Otherwise, her orgasm will go away, either for a while or for good.

Ask Up Front

A.Y.: I’d like to make my dream come true with the man I’ve loved the most, but every time I try I feel terrible. I was 15 when he broke up with me, and I suffered very much. I guess it was because I wouldn’t have sex with him. We met again after a while, but he didn’t ask, so I almost had to make him. I know he likes me, I can tell by the way he looks at me, but something holds him back. He ejaculated too soon –a first for both of us– but I got pregnant anyway. We got married, and divorced two months later. I am capable of having normal orgasms; however, he says it’s my fault because it never happens with other women. In time he married again. We have a child and get along fine, but I feel very bad. I can’t figure why I can’t fulfill my wish. What’s wrong with me?

You persist in believing that it’s all up to you and going for a man reluctant to form a bond of love with you. You notice he’s attracted to you, but at the same time admit to something pulling from the opposite way. And the only response you get is an abrupt ending to an act that shows his reluctance.

This man left you, and sex with you is not in his plans. You all but forced him to make love. It’s no use insisting, because he will keep in check whatever erotic pleasure he can give you. To make matters worse, he blames you for his performance and you don’t complain.

Both lovers have their share of whatever they do together. One acts and the other responds, and so on until their gears engage. Premature ejaculation can be effectively treated. Maybe your presence triggers some kind of negative problem that explains his short-lived performance. Be that as it may, nothing will change if he’s not interested.

Dreams can feed our wishes, but also challenge us to live with the disappointment that remains if they are not fulfilled.

Orgasmos fingidos: ¿Quién engaña a quién?
