The normalcy that we need
The entire world applauded and acclaimed the liberation of Ingrid Betancourt
and 14 other captives, among them three U.S. citizens. The frightful
experience of years of captivity in the Colombian jungle finally came to an
end through an incredible rescue operation. Now this extraordinary woman
sends an extremely important message, the difficult but necessary message of
reconciliation, for the well-being of her beloved country, for the
well-being of those who are still captives and for the well-being of
humanity. She is asking that both sides adopt a new rhetoric, which she
considers a necessary instrument for the path to normalcy.
Not only do I applaud the courageous message of
Ingrid Betancourt, but I have the hope that we Cubans learn this lesson.
Fifty years of a struggle ''deeply ingrained'' inside the family on both
sides of the straits of Florida have resulted in painful misery for the
Cuban family. Could we not also arm ourselves with sufficient courage to
embark on a similar mission on both shores? Could we not assume
responsibility for our mistakes and replace past rhetoric and actions with a
new dialogue and new actions which build bridges of mutual understanding and
normalcy for the Cuban family and the Cuban nation?

La normalidad que necesitamos
El mundo entero aplaudió y aclamó la liberación de Ingrid Betancourt y de otros 14 cautivos, entre ellos tres ciudadanos estadounidenses. La espantosa experiencia de años de cautividad en la jungla colombiana llegó finalmente a su fin mediante una inaudita operación de rescate. Ahora esta extraordinaria mujer envía un mensaje sumamente importante, el mensaje difícil pero necesario de la reconciliación, por el bien de su amado país, por el bien de aquellos que aún están cautivos y por el bien de la humanidad. Está pidiendo que ambos lados adopten una nueva retórica, que considera un instrumento necesario camino hacia la normalidad.
No sólo aplaudo el valiente mensaje de Ingrid Betancourt, sino que tengo la esperanza de que nosotros los cubanos aprendamos esta lección. Cincuenta años de una lucha ''profundamente arraigada'' dentro de la familia a ambos lados del estrecho de la Florida han redundado en dolorosa desdicha para la familia cubana. ¿No podríamos nosotros también armarnos del valor suficiente para embarcarnos en una misión similar en ambas orillas? ¿No podríamos asumir la responsabilidad de nuestros errores y reemplazar la retórica y las acciones del pasado con un nuevo diálogo y nuevas acciones que construyan puentes de comprensión mutua y de normalidad para la familia cubana y la nación cubana?
