Female Voluntary Military Service, LAS TUNAS. -- Five young women from Las Tunas master the final stage of Female Voluntary Military Service (SMVF), in military units and sectors from the province and neighboring Holguín, by completing their commitment made to the Homeland. They were awarded university careers, in a ceremony that took place in the Auditorium of the Generals, Major General Vicente García González, Plaza of the Revolution.

The young women attended the ceremony dressed in olive green and accompanied by their closest relatives, some of whom expressed the pride that overcame them. "She is doing today what I would have liked to do, but which circumstances and prejudices of the time did not allow me", said one of the mothers, while she warmly embraced her daughter.

The female quintet from Las Tunas form part of an experimental project which includes a hundred young women from around the country, who joined the SMVF for six months in February. Once past that period, they will enroll in the university at the end of August or beginning of September. The young women from Las Tunas were awarded positions of humanistic, economical and military profiles, corresponding to their preferences.

"This is a unique experience, and I recommend to my comrades that they live it, because we leave converted into more assured and more committed revolutionaries", said Marielis Balmaseda, one of the young women. "Being at the forefront of the defense of the homeland is also a duty, a privilege.  I understood it when I was a participant in the Meteor and Moncada exercises . I felt very proud to belong to the people of Fidel and Raúl."

These young women expect exceptional conditions of discipline,
unconditionality and academic performance, besides having been leaders of the UJC [Young Communist League] and the FEEM [Federation of High School Students] on different occasions. Las Tunas is one of the most outstanding provinces of the country in joining the SMVF. Last year, 35 of their young women stepped forward. Since that occurred, one thinks of surpassing that figure.

Recibieron sus carreras cinco muchachas de la oriental provincia cubana, quienes se encuentran entre el centenar que ya han dedicado seis meses a la vida militar

LAS TUNAS.— A cinco tuneras que vencen la última etapa del Servicio Militar Voluntario Femenino (SMVF), en unidades y sectores militares de la provincia y de la vecina Holguín, por el cumplimiento del compromiso contraído con la Patria, se les otorgaron carreras universitarias, en ceremonia que tuvo lugar en la Sala de los Generales, de la Plaza de la Revolución Mayor General Vicente García González.

Las jóvenes asistieron a la ceremonia vestidas de verde olivo y en compañía de sus familiares más cercanos, algunos de los cuales manifestaron el orgullo que los embarga. «Ella está haciendo hoy lo que a mí me hubiera gustado hacer, pero que las circunstancias y los prejuicios de la época no me lo permitieron», dijo una de las madres, al tiempo que abrazaba cálidamente a su hija.

El quinteto femenino tunero forma parte de un proyecto experimental que incluye a un centenar de muchachas de todo el país, quienes se incorporaron por seis meses al SMVF en el mes de febrero. Una vez transcurrido ese período, matricularán en la universidad a finales de agosto o inicios de septiembre. A las tuneras les fueron otorgadas plazas de perfiles humanísticos, económicos y militares, en correspondencia con sus preferencias.

«Esta es una experiencia única, y les recomiendo a mis compañeras que la vivan, porque salimos convertidas en revolucionarias más convencidas y más comprometidas —dijo Marielis Balmaseda, una de las jóvenes. Estar en primera fila en la defensa de la Patria es, además de un deber, un privilegio. Lo comprendí cuando fui partícipe de los ejercicios Meteoro y Moncada. Me sentí muy orgullosa de pertenecer a este pueblo de Fidel y de Raúl».

Estas muchachas cuentan con excepcionales condiciones de disciplina, incondicionalidad y rendimiento académico, además de haber sido dirigentes de la UJC y de la FEEM a diferentes instancias. Las Tunas es una de las provincias más destacadas del país en la incorporación al SMVF. El pasado año, 35 de sus muchachas dieron el paso al frente. En el que transcurre, se piensa superar esa cifra.
