Thousands of Cuban pioneer students*
join the ranks of the Young Communist League
Ninth grade students were granted membership on Che’s birthday and prove that juvenile joy is never at odds with the sense of responsibility.

CÁRDENAS, Matanzas province.— No sooner had a coat of paint been applied to the little airplanes at the playground Por los caminos de la historia than it started to fall off. For the pioneer students who try to rescue that facility, the merrymaking hadn’t last long. However, they became anything but disheartened and painted them again right away, this time with vinyl, a substance designed for walls which hardly sticks to metal.
There are plenty of funny anecdotes about their collective effort to overhaul and save a peaceful place for our kids to enjoy. A total of 155 local pioneer students admitted to the Young Communist League (UJC) as part of a special process to increase the organization’s membership with ninth grade students had decided to work in a social project, and that’s what they were doing when we visited this town, known as Ciudad Bandera (Flag City).
No one intends to ask the impossible: at 14 you’re still full of pep and eager to play. But it’s really comforting to see them laughing and living it up while taking on responsibilities.
Full speed ahead
We shared the afternoon work with some of the new UJC members, who won’t conceal their happiness even if their eyes reveal their yearning to get things on fast forward and make it to the future ahead of schedule. We step closer to Liz Hernández Pérez, a lively girl from the secondary school ’Félix Varela’: «I’m honored and proud to be in the UJC. I’m very happy, and so is my family».
They were getting the grounds clean and clear of weeds and painting the devices and walls when some families showed up with their toddlers to spend some time. But the new UJC members were not distracted by the newcomers.
«All students dream of joining the organization. Today we help by working in this social project, but I’m not afraid to carry on with any task the Revolution might need», says Argelio Morales Peña, also from the ‘Felix Varela’ school.
Don’t think it was all hard work and strenuous efforts. Some of them would slip away to try the swings and seesaws. Of course, only for a moment before they took the machetes again to give the lawn a once-over.

Also doing his bit for the daily grind as happily as the rest is Elián González Brotoms, who admits to his long-standing aspiration to join the UJC: «As members we’re more committed to the Revolution», assures this young lad, thin and restless, on his lips the smile everybody knows and admires, as he shares the thirst, the jokes and the hard work with his friends.
About the selection process, Elián remarks they attended seminars to learn about how the UJC works and what membership entails, including the pledge to be a better student and have more fighting spirit every day.
We couldn’t help a shudder as we looked at and chatted with this Elián. This talkative, charismatic boy who gets along with the group and is as fun to be with as any other Cuban brings to mind both the happiness of the people who fought so hard for his return and Fidel’s hopes to see him grow to become an example of good student and patriot. He is now the pioneers’ leader in the secondary school ‘Esteban Hernández’. «Fidel and Raúl can count on us and be sure we won’t let them down».
In 2000, the leader of the Revolution referred to the need to channel Elián’s education towards the values of modesty, love for his Homeland, humanism and solidarity: «Turning him into a model child, worthy of his history, warmth and talent so he can always be not only an ordinary citizen but also a symbol, a glorious example to all Cuban children and the pride of Cuba’s education system is an extremely significant task facing our teachers and educators».
His classmate Nelson Álvarez recalls the good political training they received during the process, which included voluntary work, visits to historical sites, celebrations of significant anniversaries, and participation in rallies and students contests.
Alejandro Govantes Aldama, from the school ‘Víctimas de La Coubre’ is as unable to hide his excitement about what he calls the most important achievement in the life of any student, and one that entails setting an example at school and in the community.
Close friends
The exceptional process to grant ninth grade students UJC membership starts right at the grassroots cells in their schools, where names are put forward for consideration based on the candidate’s conditions before inquiries are made into the nominees’ overall qualities with the help of their General Integral Professor (GIP).
Renier García Gómez, 23, is one of those professors, graduated with Honors from the University’s Municipal Teaching School ‘Nicolás Guillén’ and went on to specialize as a High School GIP. «I was consulted about Leidys Arango and Elián González, whom I highly recommended as true examples of students who honor their duties and obligations», he told JR.
«For this special process to recruit new members we take into account the student’s behavior and results all through their three years in high school. We have noticed Elián has developed many good leadership qualities, solidarity values and enough values to stand as an example among his comrades. He’s a humble and humane young man who fulfills his duties quite responsibly».
«Has he made progress in other ways in the last three years?»
«Mainly in the way he mixes with others, his maturity and lack of inhibition. He has overcome his shyness to the point that now he’s got what it takes to be a leader. He expresses himself more naturally and knows how to be a team leader. Well, he’s the head of his school, and has considerable appeal among the students.
«Besides, he won the municipal swimming competition and takes part in every quiz contest, in and outside his school. All in all, Elián is an integral students, although a very restless and active, and loves to make jokes as any other Cuban teenager».
«What comes to mind when your students move on to the next grade?»
«I’ll miss them all, but I’m particularly very glad to see how Elián has grown to become the young man our Commander had dreamed he would be when he called us all, as soon as the child returned, to help him be what he is today. We hit it off since day one. At first I felt a little shyer than he, but he makes you open up himself. He’s easy to like and his friendship knows no boundaries.
«I feel satisfied and honored, as I’ll cherish this experience for the rest of my personal and professional life. Being with him and his comrades has meant a lot to me. At first I was afraid of such an important responsibility, but never unsure of myself. My fear was that I would fall short of people’s expectations, but in the end it was easy because he did almost everything by himself».

Behind Harry Potter’s moralSANTIAGO DE CUBA.— Victoria Margarita Villarreal Lesmes has a teenager’s energy and the maturity to take notice of the things that matter. That’s why, when she found out that on June 14, the 80th anniversary of the Heroic Guerrilla and the 163rd of the Bronze Titan, she would receive her UJC member card –as part of the ‘José Martí’ Pioneers Organization’s special process to recruit ninth grade students– two things came to mind: her life as a student and Harry Potter, her favorite literary hero. She confesses that thanks to the popular character she managed to understand that the problems of the magic world can be very real, and that humbleness, love and humanism were the most important things to succeed in life. Her passion for History and many evenings spent reading at home –in the very heart of Santiago de Cuba– as well as her participation in the history quiz show Encuentro con Clío (Encounter with Clio) and other activities in her secondary school ‘Camilo Cienfuegos’ were pivotal to learn Che Guevara’s teaching that being a UJC member demands sacrifice, devotion and consequence. From Antonio Maceo she learned that it is essential to always be courageous, strong and decisive to deal with any negative trend and remain undaunted by the difficulties. These lessons that she held at heart for three years as a student decided to rank among the best in her class and as president of she school’s council intent on fulfilling her duties fairly and convincingly, helped her improve as a human being. From her teenage world she has come closer to this vanguard position she deems an indispensable condition to be met by any communist youth, so she’s not at all worried about her early political affiliation. «You learn to be responsible by assuming tasks», she assures, her black eyes and cheerful face oozing confidence. Beyond the expected rigor and commitment that being in the UJC involves, she’s very enthusiastic about it, perhaps as a result of an intense activity as a pioneer student leader –with the tears, smiles, problems and contradictions that such responsibility entails– which gave her the key to be at once demanding, flexible, friendly and thoughtful and learn to put herself in other people’s place. From now on she will apportion her responsibilities to make room for her love for subjects like History, English and Math; her duties as a daughter «who must reward the efforts of a mother who gives her everything»; dancing; chess; The Beatles; German language, and as many challenges as they come. Such a «workload», she acknowledges, often makes her feel stressed out and forced to put off many things she likes to do until her next vacation time, but being always immersed in fruitful occupations is more important to her than the cravings of an overeager personality or the satisfaction of her work as a pioneer student leader. To her status as a UJC member she will add the fundamental lessons she has so far learned from life, for instance, that it’s impossible to please everybody; that when you hold a position of responsibility your flaws and virtues have a higher profile in society; that if you seriously take on an assignment you must do everything in your power to succeed... and above all else, that the pride of joining the UJC ranks and therefore being among the finest –something many other pioneer students have felt this June– brings with it the will to be consistent with the attitude that put you there in the first place: you must strive to be a hardworking, serious-minded, committed supporter. If she really manages to properly discharge in the future the duties she has just assumed –Victoria says– she would like to make it all the way to the Communist Party, an aspiration only comparable to her desire to study Law or Psychology, two seemingly different fields the common element of which is that you can help other people. Otras anécdotas curiosas pudieran contarse del esfuerzo colectivo por salvar y entregar un sitio apacible donde los niños disfruten. Los 155 pioneros de aquí a quienes se les otorgó la condición de militantes de la UJC como parte del proceso de crecimiento especial de noveno grado, se propusieron trabajar en una obra social y en esos menesteres los encontramos durante nuestra visita a la Ciudad Bandera.
A los 14 años de edad todavía se juega mucho. Nadie pretendería pedirles peras al olmo, pero al verlos contentos, jaraneando, y a la vez asumiendo responsabilidades, se siente felicidad.
Rápido al futuro
Con un grupo de los nuevos militantes compartimos la faena vespertina. Ellos no ocultan la alegría, aunque en las miradas se nota ese anhelo por llegar más rápido de la cuenta al futuro. Nos acercamos a una niña vivaz nombrada Liz Hernández Pérez, de la ESBU Félix Varela: «Es un honor y un orgullo ingresar a la UJC. Me siento muy feliz, al igual que mi familia».
Mientras limpiaban, chapeaban o pintaban los aparatos y muros, algunas familias llegaron con sus pequeñines a disfrutar. Nada de eso impidió que los nuevos militantes continuaran su labor.
«Todo pionero sueña con alcanzar esa condición, y ahora aportamos en esta obra social. No estoy asustado, me siento feliz de llevar adelante cualquier tarea para que la Revolución siga adelante», asegura Argelio Morales Peña, también estudiante de la Varela.
No crea el lector que todo era puro esfuerzo y sudor. Algunos se escabullían hasta las hamacas o cachumbambés. Claro, solo por un momento, para luego continuar con el machete rebanando el césped.

Al comentar sobre el proceso de selección, Elián sostuvo que les impartieron seminarios para enseñarles el funcionamiento de la UJC, el compromiso que entraña ser militante comunista, que implica ser mejor estudiante cada día, más combativo ante las indisciplinas.
Mirando y conversando con el Elián de hoy, sentimos un estremecimiento. Sus buenas relaciones con el grupo, locuacidad, su carácter jaranero, como un cubanito más, el carisma que posee... hacen recordar la felicidad del pueblo que tanto luchó por su regreso, y a Fidel con su anhelo de verlo convertido en ejemplo de buen estudiante y patriota.
El líder de la Revolución sentenció, en el año 2000, lo que significaba encaminar la educación de Elián por los derroteros de la modestia, el amor a la Patria, el humanismo y la solidaridad: «Nuestros abnegados maestros y pedagogos deberán llevar a cabo la obra maestra de convertirlo en un niño modelo, digno de su historia y de sus simpatías y su talento, para que sea siempre, a la vez que un ciudadano normal, un símbolo, un ejemplo y una gloria para todos los niños de nuestro país, y un orgullo para la educación de Cuba».
Elián, actual jefe de colectivo de la ESBU Esteban Hernández, confiesa que ahora, como militante, es mayor el compromiso: «Fidel y Raúl pueden contar con nosotros, que no los defraudaremos».
Otro de sus compañeritos de escuela, Nelson Álvarez, manifiesta que estando inmersos en el proceso recibieron una buena preparación política, con actividades que incluyeron trabajos voluntarios, visitas a centros de interés histórico, la celebración de fechas importantes, la participación en actos y en concursos pioneriles.
Tampoco Alejandro Govantes Aldama, de la ESBU Víctimas de La Coubre, oculta su entusiasmo, al considerar que este es el mérito más importante en la vida de un estudiante, y que implica ejemplaridad en la escuela y la cuadra.
Amigos entrañables
El proceso excepcional de otorgamiento de la militancia de la UJC a los jóvenes de noveno grado comienza en los propios comités de base de las escuelas, en los que los militantes emiten sus propuestas de los estudiantes que cuentan con potencialidades. También se consulta al Profesor General Integral del alumno, quien brinda detalles sobre su actitud ante las tareas.
«En el caso de Leidys Arango y Elián González, se me realizó la consulta y se corroboró que son ejemplos para sus compañeritos y cumplen con las tareas», precisó a este diario el profesor Renier García Gómez, de 23 años de edad, quien concluye con Diploma de Oro sus estudios de Licenciatura en Educación en la especialidad de PGI de Secundaria Básica, en la sede pedagógica municipal Nicolás Guillén.
«Para el crecimiento especial se tiene en cuenta la trayectoria estudiantil durante los tres años de Secundaria Básica. En el caso de Elián se ha visto el despertar de esas cualidades de ejemplaridad, de líder, de sencillez, modestia, de ser ejemplo ante el resto de sus compañeros. Es muy humano, solidario, y asume con madurez cada tarea que se le asigna».
—En estos tres años, ¿en qué evolucionó más Elián?
—En su forma de relacionarse con los compañeros, de desenvolverse en un colectivo, en su madurez; en ser más desinhibido, menos tímido, en convertirse en líder innato. Las ideas le salen espontáneamente y sabe dirigir un equipo. Es el jefe de colectivo de la escuela, que ha avanzado con él al frente en la emulación pioneril.
«También obtuvo el primer lugar municipal en natación. Participa en todos los concursos, en actividades dentro y fuera del centro. Es un alumno integral, aunque muy intranquilo, jaranero, un adolescente cubano. Le encanta bromear y desarrolla mucha actividad».
—¿Qué le viene a la mente cuando sus alumnos pasan a otra enseñanza?
—A todos los extrañaré, pero específicamente en el caso de Elián me da una gran alegría verlo convertido en ese joven que el Comandante soñó cuando, tras su regreso, hizo un llamado para convertirlo en lo que vemos hoy. Desde el principio nos relacionamos bien. Yo siempre un poco más tímido que él en la relación, pero él mismo te da entrada, se deja querer y se entrega en una relación de amistad sin límites.
«Me siento satisfecho y honrado, ha sido una experiencia que me acompañará toda la vida como ser humano y profesor, porque me ha aportado mucho estar junto a él y sus compañeros. Al principio sentí miedo por la alta responsabilidad, pero nunca tuve dudas. Sentí temor a no cumplir las expectativas, a no lograr con él lo que se esperaba, pero no fue difícil porque la mayor parte la hizo él mismo».
Tras la moraleja de Harry PotterSANTIAGO DE CUBA.— Victoria Margarita Villarreal Lesmes tiene los bríos de los 15 años y la madurez de quien repara en las esencias. Por eso, cuando se enteró de que este 14 de junio, coincidiendo con el cumpleaños 80 del Guerrillero Heroico y el 163 del Titán de Bronce, recibiría el carné de militante de la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas, como parte del crecimiento especial a pioneros de noveno grado que realiza la Organización de Pioneros José Martí, pensó en su vida estudiantil y en Harry Potter, su héroe literario favorito. Con el popular personaje, confiesa, asimiló que los problemas del mundo mágico pueden ser muy reales y que la sencillez, el amor y el humanismo son las mejores maneras de triunfar en la vida. De su pasión por la Historia, de noches de lectura en su casa de Santa Lucía y Padre Pico, en el mismo corazón de la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba; de los Encuentros con Clío y otras actividades en su escuela —la ESBU Camilo Cienfuegos, de la Ciudad Heroína—, aprendió con el Che que ser militante demanda sacrificio, consagración y consecuencia; y con Maceo, que es preciso tener temple, firmeza y decisión siempre a mano, para enfrentar lo mal hecho y no dejarse amilanar por las dificultades. Esas lecciones, que siguió durante tres cursos en su escuela, como presidenta del consejo de colectivo desde el séptimo grado, empeñada en hacer justo y dinámico el trabajo pioneril en su colectivo, y como pionera preocupada por estar entre los primeros estudiantes, le han ayudado a crecer como ser humano. Desde su mundo adolescente se ha acercado a esa posición de vanguardia que cree imprescindible en todo joven comunista; así que para nada le asusta tener una militancia política tan tempranamente. «A ser responsable se aprende asumiendo tareas», dice, y sus negros ojos y su rostro jovial transpiran decisión. Quizá porque intensas jornadas como dirigente pioneril —con lágrimas y sonrisas, sonrojos y contradicciones incluidas— le han enseñado muchas claves para ser exigente, flexible y amigable, reflexiva y para ponerse en el lugar de los otros, entrar a la UJC la entusiasma más allá de las expectativas de rigor y compromiso con que asocia a la organización. En lo adelante seguirá repartida entre sus responsabilidades, su amor por la Historia, el Inglés o las Matemáticas, sus deberes como hija «que debe retribuir los desvelos de una madre que le da todas las facilidades»; el casino, el ajedrez, el alemán, la música de Los Beatles y cuantos retos vengan. Tanta «carga», confiesa, muchas veces la llena de estrés y y la ha obligado a postergar para las vacaciones cosas que le gustan, pero para ella estar siempre ocupada en cuestiones útiles es más que la necesidad de un temperamento inquieto o la satisfacción de hacer dentro de la Organización de Pioneros. A su condición de militante, dice, incorporará lecciones esenciales que le ha regalado hasta hoy la vida, como que no es posible quedar bien con todo el mundo; que cuando se tiene un cargo o responsabilidad los defectos y virtudes se amplifican ante los demás; que si uno asume seriamente una tarea debe hacer todo lo posible por no quedar mal... y sobre todo, que aparejado al orgullo de ingresar a la UJC —algo que muchos otros pioneros sienten en este junio— debe estar la voluntad de ser consecuentes con las actitudes que los han llevado a estar entre los primeros: ser laboriosos, incondicionales, responsables. Si de veras consigue en el futuro llevar adecuadamente la responsabilidad que hoy asume, advierte, le gustaría ingresar a las filas del Partido Comunista; tanto como estudiar Psicología o Derecho, dos especialidades que le apasionan, a pesar de sus contrastes, porque le permiten ayudar a otras personas. Dice así, y en su gesto se desborda la magia, esa que es capaz de hermanar la sinceridad y la inocencia. Otra vez salen a relucir las lecciones de Harry Potter. (Odalis Riquenes Cutiño) |
