The Solidarity Movement in Canada is with Cuba

The freedom of the Five, the extradition of Posada Carriles to Venezuela and the end of the blockade, are some of the demands of this group.

When she was a teenager, Tamara Hansen decided to support Cuba in its international struggle for the freedom of our Five Heroes, prisoners in U.S. jails, after she heard about them from a representative of the Cuban Embassy who visited her city, Vancouver, for a solidarity event.

Since then, this 23 year old Canadian has been part of the Free the Cuban Five Committee in her country and of the group Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba, of which she is today the coordinator.

During her stay on the Island, in order to participate in the Second International Conference for the Balance of the World, she told Juventud Rebelde some details of the work in solidarity with Cuba taking place in her country.

"In the last two years the Free the Cuban Five Committee has been much more active than in the beginning. On the 20th of August 2007, when the Five where facing the Court of Appeals in Atlanta, we demanded their freedom for 24 hours in front of the U.S. Consulate."

"From December 2005, there have been protests in front of the U.S. Consulate once a month, they last for an hour, and between 25 and 90 people participate, which for us is a significant figure, if we take into account that the major media are not interested in the case of these anti-imperialist fighters. The silence in Canada is the same as in the U.S."

"Only smaller media in Spanish, which exists in our city for the Latino communities, speak a bit about the case, and sometimes help the Committee in the promotion of its activities"

On the other hand, Hansen tells us, the case of the Five is also part of the agenda of VCSC, which carries out two other campaign demands: one against the genocidal policy of the blockade imposed by the U.S. on Cuba for almost a half century, and another for the extradition of the terrorist Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela, something which is also absent on the information agenda of major Canadian media.

"The work of VCSC began in 2005, when George W. Bush announced his plan for 'freedom and democracy' in Cuba."

A third year French student at Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver, she explains her work in the area of students: "We organize many events on universities and colleges in our city�Simon Fraser University, Langara College, Capilano College and the University of British Columbia� to explain the importance of this struggle for the freedom of the Five."

"We also make homage to Che, speak about Fidel, of the blockade, and we show Cuba as an example of an anti-imperialist country for humanity, which supports health, education, and other important projects which fight for life, and which represent human rights which are respected on this Island for all the social collective, with no type of distinction, which does not happen in many other nations, including Canada," explains Tamara, who has visited our country many times as a member of the Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade and became its western regional coordinator in 2007.

"With respect to the Five, although those who participate in our events come to support the justness of the cause, they remain skeptical about the possibility of their release, given the strength of the U.S. But, we continue working because we have to convince people that it is a struggle in which we can win."

Fire This Time

Tamara Hansen also writes for the publication Fire This Time, which belongs to VCSC, an anti-imperialist and pro-Cuba newspaper, which is distributed for free in Vancouver, the production of which is a result of the sacrifice and donations of those who support the movement. For this reason it is published every month and a half, not monthly, as it�s defenders would like.

"We have published articles about the electoral system in Cuba, Che and Fidel, as well as the response by Felipe Perez Roque to Bush�s speeches. It is also a space to promote our work and its results and to call for solidarity with the Island."

Cuando era una adolescente, Tamara Hansen decidió apoyar a Cuba en su lucha internacional por la liberación de nuestros cinco héroes, prisioneros en cárceles norteamericanas, luego que los conoció cuando representantes de la embajada cubana en Canadá fueron a su ciudad, Vancouver, a un encuentro solidario.

Desde entonces, esta canadiense de 23 años ha estado vinculada al Comité de Solidaridad por la Liberación de los Cinco en su país y al grupo de Comunidades de Vancouver en Solidaridad con Cuba (VCSC por sus siglas en inglés), del cual es hoy coordinadora.

Durante su estancia en la Isla para participar en la Segunda Conferencia Internacional por el equilibrio del Mundo, comentó a JR, algunos detalles sobre la labor de solidaridad con Cuba que tiene lugar en su país.

«Los dos últimos años de acción del Comité por la liberación de los Cinco en Canadá han sido mucho más activos que en sus inicios. El 20 de agosto de 2007, cuando los Cinco estaban frente al tribunal de apelaciones de Atlanta, demandamos su libertad durante 24 horas frente al consulado estadounidense.

«Desde diciembre de 2005, las manifestaciones frente al consulado se hacen una vez al mes, duran una hora y participan entre 25 y 90 personas, que para nosotros es una cifra bastante significativa si tenemos en cuenta que los grandes medios no se interesan en el caso de estos luchadores antiterroristas. En Canadá ocurre igual silencio que en EE.UU.

«Solo los pequeños medios en español que existen en nuestra ciudad para las comunidades latinas hablan un poquito sobre el caso, y a veces ayudan al Comité en la divulgación de nuestras actividades».

Por otra parte, según nos comenta Hansen, el caso de los Cinco también forma parte de la agenda del VCSC, el cual lleva a cabo otras dos campañas de demandas: una contra la política genocida de bloqueo impuesta por los EE.UU. hace casi medio siglo contra Cuba, y otra por la extradición a Venezuela del terrorista Luis Posada Carriles, también ausente en la agenda informativa de los grandes medios de comunicación canadienses.

«El trabajo del VCSC comenzó en 2005, cuando George W. Bush anunció su plan para la «libertad y la democracia» en Cuba.

La estudiante de tercer año de Licenciatura en Francés en la Universidad Simon Fraser, de Vancouver, explica la labor en los medios estudiantiles: «Organizamos muchos eventos en universidades y colegios de nuestra ciudad —Simón Fraser University, Langara College, Capilano College y University of British Columbia— para explicar la importancia de esta lucha por la libertad de los Cinco.

«También homenajeamos al Che, hablamos de Fidel, del bloqueo, y mostramos a Cuba como un ejemplo de país antiimperialista para la Humanidad, que apoya la salud, la educación y otros proyectos muy importantes que optan por la vida, y que constituyen derechos humanos respetados en esta Isla para toda la colectividad social, sin ningún tipo de distinciones, lo cual no ocurre en muchas otras naciones, incluyendo Canadá», acota Tamara, quien ha visitado varias veces nuestro país como integrante de la Brigada Internacional de Trabajo Voluntario Ernesto Che Guevara, y en 2007 llegó a ser su coordinadora en la región occidental.

«Con respecto a los Cinco, aunque quienes participan en nuestros encuentros llegan a apoyar la justeza de la causa, permanece a veces el escepticismo respecto a las posibilidades de liberarlos, dada la fuerza de EE.UU. Pero seguimos trabajando porque tenemos que convencer a las personas de que se trata de una lucha en la que podemos obtener la victoria».

Fuego de este tiempo

Tamara Hansen escribe, además, en la publicación Fire this Time (FTT) que pertenece a VCSC, una revista antiimperialista y de solidaridad con Cuba, que se distribuye gratis en Vancouver y cuya producción es resultado del sacrificio y las donaciones de quienes apoyan el movimiento. Por ello, se publica cada mes y medio y no mensualmente, como quieren sus defensores.

«Hemos publicado artículos sobre el sistema de elecciones en Cuba, el Che y Fidel, así como la respuesta de Felipe Pérez Roque a los discursos de Bush. También es un espacio para promocionar la labor de nuestras actividades y sus resultados y convocar a la solidaridad con la Isla».
