Cabaret: The Cuban Version

The musical show Cabaret by the group Menfisto Teatro will be premiered at the end of this month at the Bertold Brecht cultural center, according to sources from the National Council on performing Arts (CNAE). Based on a Broadway classic, the musical show has the artistic and general direction of Tony Díaz.

During a press conference, authorities with CNAE reported that the Cuban version, the production of which falls on young actors, singers and dancers of the Menfisto group, was conceived to be premiered during the inauguration of the Bertold Brecht cultural center, which was totally refurbished.

According to Tony Díaz, this Cabaret, described as a version ´for Cubans and in the Cuban fashion´, respects the original idea of John van Druten, who produced the first stage version based on a story from the book ´The Berlin Stories´ (1939) by English antifascist Christopher Isherwood.

The stage production recalls the Sally Bowles and Kit Kat Club of the 1930s in Berlin. In some aspects, including the set design, choreographies and costumes, the Cuban version is similar to the US version, though each and every Cuban artist on stage contributes his or her personal style.

Tony Díaz explained that he used a script by his colleague Nelson Dorr, based on previous ideas for other productions of the musical show. Díaz thanked scriptwriters Héctor Quintero, José Milián and Dorr himself for their contribution.

The artistic director expressed his satisfaction with the choreographic work of Iván Tenorio, which he said is somehow different from the film by Bob Fosse and other stage productions in Broadway and in countries like Mexico and Spain.

He also praised the music, the rehearsals and the young actors´ hard training in all three disciplines: acting, dancing and singing for this production.

The exact date of the inauguration of the refurbished theatre and the premiere of Cabaret is yet to be announced. The musical show had previews in the Cuban cities of Bayamo, Manzanillo, Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila and Cienfuegos. According to sources from the National Council on Performing Arts, the Havana premiere will take place ´after June 20th.´

The same sources praised the refurbishing work carried out in the old building that houses the Bertold Brecht cultural center. The facility will now have a big theatre hall, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, a smaller one known as a coffee theatre and an art gallery for exhibits dealing with the current world trends in stage design.

Cabaret en versión cubana

La obra de Tony Díaz sobre el original de Broadway llega a la capital, tras recorrer otras ciudades del interior del país

El espectáculo musical Cabaret, a cargo del grupo Menfisto Teatro, con dirección artística y general de Tony Díaz y basado en un clásico del teatro musical originario de Broadway, será estrenado en el Centro Cultural Bertold Brecht a finales de este mes, informó el Consejo Nacional de Artes Escénicas (CNAE).

Directivos de ese organismo precisaron en conferencia de prensa que esta lectura cubana sobre la obra, cuyo montaje recae en actores, cantantes y bailarines jóvenes del propio Menfisto, ha sido concebida para exhibirse durante la inauguración de ese teatro, sometido últimamente a una reparación capital.

Este Cabaret, que alguien describió "para los cubanos y a lo cubano", se ha realizado, según Tony Díaz, respetando la idea de John van Druten, quien tuvo a su cargo la primera versión teatral basada, a su vez, en un cuento de Los relatos de Berlín (1939) del antifascista inglés Christopher Isherwood, que fue seguida de otras muy exitosas como la de 1966.

Proyecto escénico que nos trae remembranzas de la Sally Bowles y el Kit Kat Club del Berlín de los años treinta, ciertos aspectos escenográficos, coreográficos y de vestuario se han concebido, en algunos casos, parecidos a como fueron realizados en Estados Unidos, pero con sustanciales aportes y conceptos propios de los artistas que los realizan.

Precisó Tony Díaz que empleó también un libreto facilitado por su colega Nelson Dorr, procedente de ideas anteriores para otras puestas en escena de este musical, y agradeció los antecedentes aportados a esta modalidad por Héctor Quintero, José Milián y el propio Dorr.

El director artístico se mostró conforme con el trabajo coreográfico de Iván Tenorio para esta puesta, aunque su formulación —aclaró— es diferente a la de la película dirigida por Bob Fosse y a las de otros montajes teatrales realizados en Broadway o en países como México o España.

Reconoció, igualmente, los aportes en la música y, especialmente, la calidad y eficacia de los ensayos y el entrenamiento de los jóvenes actores en sus variantes actoral, vocal-musical y danzaria.

Aunque no fue precisada la fecha exacta de la inauguración del reactivado escenario y el consiguiente estreno de Cabaret, cuyo preestreno por provincias abarcó a las ciudades de Bayamo, Manzanillo, Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila y Cienfuegos, los funcionarios del CNAE anunciaron que será "después del 20 de junio".

Se refirieron, además, al "profundo trabajo de remozamiento" que se ha estado haciendo sobre el antiguo edificio, que quedará ahora integrado por una sala grande bien habilitada tecnológicamente, una más pequeña conocida como el café teatro y una galería para exposiciones sobre diseño teatral con características internacionales.
