A woman's soul is fearless
A group of young women, with olive green pants, mid-calf boots and caps adjusted almost to the height of their eyes, joined, for the first time, the Female Voluntary Military Service of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT).

Who said that
military service is only for men? They are Cuba
and have children to consider, and that is
sufficient. They have worn mottled pants,
mid-calf boots, cap adjusted almost to the
height of their eyes, and they have carried
rifles and canteens to overcome the narrowest
terrain, the most complex skirmishes.
They have more than enough reasons. They have
seen their parents, siblings and neighbours
stretching their work hours to achieve some
collective dream, or carrying the light of
health and education to forgotten corners. They
know well those days in which they had to
tighten their belts and cast farther abroad,
circumventing the blockade with ingenuity and
without a recipe.
Therefore, they believe and assume that it is
their time, and they have dared to conquer the
terrain where men are trained to defend the
yearnings and memories of the country. They are
eight women who have put their commitment to the
nation in first place, where the citizen's
sovereignty and tranquility has been achieved
with machete, sweat and blood.
They have
been like us...
Sheathed in their olive green attire, the young
women Aralia, Ariadna, Yan Ly, Liset, Yamila,
Ailé, Milagros and Lizet are left to infer the
energy, will power and refinement that lived in
Celia, Haydée and Vilma, only to mention some of
those women who nurture and radiate the homeland
history.
"Sometimes we do not recognoze it with total
clarity, but when we take the step forward, in
tasks like this, we are taking possession of the
spirit of all these great women who preceded us
and, borrowing from the meaning of Fidel's
words, they have been like us", reflected

The young women,
with the exception of Ailé Quesada, are a
profesional squad of the Union of Young
Communists. At the Fifth Plenary of the National
Committee of the youth organization, when the
relevance of women joining the military service
in preparation for defense was put on the table,
they did not hesitate and they accepted the
proposal.
The urgent reality, denoted by the current
population
dynamics, made them understand the importance of
the matter. And today they sprinkle with their
grace a scene marked by severity, discipline and
a sense of duty.
Young people cannot leave the defense of the
country to luck. It would be like forgetting
about the future and tearing out the past from
our veins. In addition, the preparation that we
acquire strengthens us a lot as leaders. These
were
acknowledged as the greatest motivations that
led them to make that decision.
When Ailé, a member of the National Secretariat
of the FEU, became acquainted with the analysis
that they made at the Plenary, she wanted to
enlist immediately.
"Being in the squad implies being in the
vanguard -declared Lizet Zamora- and if this
requires our effort and determination, well
then, we will be here during the six months of
service".
"One
tries to have common sense, the stereotypes that
exist about this being done by men, is not
important. We have confronted it and nothing is
impossible. On the contrary, we have contributed
to each other a lot in our training", she
emphasized.
The eight young women, together with 16 others
in the country, are the first youth squad,
convened by the UJC, that fulfills Female
Voluntary Military Service in the Ministry of
the Interior.
Maday Iglesias, a member of the National Bureau
of the organization, explained that the most
important part of this initiative has been that
these units have become actual formative schools
made up of squads from the UJC, from which the
young women will leave prepared for defense, and
above all for ideological political work.
Once they finish the stage of military service,
they will form part of the MININT reserves.
"The experience has also been new for us",
commented Lt. Col. Rafael Mugica, chief of the
Special Firefighter's Command of Capdevila, the
municipal capital of Boyeros, where five of the
young women pass the stage of Basic Military
Preparation, better known as "la previa".

Mugica reported that they had to prepare a new
quarters for the young women and to create the
necessary conditions for welcoming them. But the
most interesting, according to his appraisal, is
that they have never seen them upset or sad.
They adapted to the system and are capable of
assuming any responsibility.
He also recognized that this practice is not
only important because they grow the ranks of
soldiers, but additionally, because they develop
a valuable political work among the troops,
without neglecting to emphasize their
contributions to the embellishment of the unit.
Happiness
and stress
A test of persistence, the young women overcome
endless days of physical preparation,
displacement in the field, infantry and
individual fighting, among other activities.
"Over there the unwary believe that our pace is
going to be less and that we are going to stay
stragglers", they admitted smiling.
"We cannot be behind in anything, emphasized
Ailé, because, in that manner, neither do the
boys surrender. Imagine, if they see us doing
it, for pride or
manliness, they do not give up".
Yan Ly Formoso indicated that they had very
stressful days, because they were not accustomed
to so much exercise load. "We were sedentary so
you can assume our muscles ache. Every time that
something had to be done, we looked at each
other, I do not know if it was giving us pity or
encouragement, but it is certain that we were
resisting".
We demand a lot, maintained Yamila Fuentes. "In
the inspections we try to not have any
deficiencies, because we constantly rival with
the young men of the other
previa", she expressed.
In that competition, in order to be ready before
the boys, detailed Ailé, one day we got up at
four o'clock in the morning. "When we realized
what hour it was, we opened our eyes wide and we
said to ourselves: We try hard; but neither do
we have to over-react!".
We must also stress, declared Yamila, the
unconditional help and understanding from our
families, without which it would have been
impossible to get this far. "I myself have two
children and they are the ones who take care of
them but even so I do not stop worrying."
"Equally very pleasant things have happened to
us during the period of adaptation. For Ailé and
me there were no uniform sizes. And as women, we
are presumptuous by nature, we insisted to the
storekeeper until he found some pants, we fixed
them and they remained 'mottled' for us",
described Aralia González.
"Sometimes, related Ariadna Yero, in desperation
for being first in finishing, we put on the
boots before the pants. Or we wanted to soften
these shoes to see if they would quit punishing
us with blisters".
"There were moments in which we seemed like
little robots because of the pain in all our
bones, continued the representative of the FEU.
The morning gymnastics are intense, but soon you
accustom yourself. The other day was very
amusing, because I fell and looked like a
spring; instantly I was in place. Almost no one
noticed it".

What we are most grateful for at this stage, the
soldiers agreed, is to know deeply those sides
of MININT life for which we had only a minimal
representation. In addition, they
concurred, here we are integrally trained and we
put our knowledge to the test.
For Ariadna, the political-ideological work with
the soldiers has been very important. "Young
people exist who do not understand the full
dimension of some issues; then it is there where
you clarify them, you teach and you help to
understand many of the things which you master".
"You face other realities, argued Yan Ly, the
soldiers are diverse and you have to advise or
persuade them of something. And I am convinced
that we nurture a lot during those exchanges".
"When we finish this intense military
preparation, explained Yamila, we will continue
service in other fronts of MININT. We will be in
the Border Guard, the National School of
Firefighters and in a Comprehensive Training
School, among other institutions of the sector".
The case of
Milagros Baserio, Lizet Zamora and Liset Franco
was different. These three young women spent the
previa outside of the province, in Pinar
del Río. There they had to accustom themselves,
as they say, to the distance, to the boots, to
the heat of the uniform, to the intense tactical
exercises. "But the pain was worth it," they
affirmed almost in chorus.
"I believe that this experience has been very
valuable, considered Lizet. Beyond that immense
handful of anecdotes which do not fit in our
suitcases, we have a new perspective of military
life, of soldiers".
"We, who already finished the previa and we are,
Lizet in the Havana Vieja Specialized Police
Unit and I in the Provincial Patrol Unit,
commented Milagros, we feel part of the dynamics
of these women and men who fight to maintain the
tranquility and security of the people".
"I think, opined Lizet, that I am going to I
feel much nostalgia when it finishes. As to the
political fulfillment, we are in direct daily
contact with the soldiers, many of them have
even asked us not to go.
"It is very curious, the degree of
identification which we achieve with this work.
I had a limited image of the members' work in
the MININT, and now I risk appearing pedantic,
but there is not anyone who does not create for
me a story.
"On the other hand, and this has been the most
significant for us, we feel more fortified for
the tasks that the UJC or the Party assigns us.
We are, definitely, in the best condition to
assume new responsibilities".

Les sobran las razones. Han visto a sus padres, hermanos y vecinos estirando sus horas laborales para lograr algún sueño colectivo, o llevando la luz de la salud y la educación a rincones olvidados. Bien conocen de aquellos días en que tuvieron que apretarse duro el cinturón y echar adelante como fuera, burlando el bloqueo con ingenio y sin receta.
Por eso creen y asumen que es su tiempo, y se han atrevido a conquistar el terreno donde los hombres se entrenan para defender los anhelos y memorias del país. Son ocho mujeres que han puesto su empeño en ese primer lugar de la nación, donde la soberanía y la tranquilidad ciudadana se han conseguido con machete, sudor y sangre.
Ellas hubieran sido como nosotras...
Enfundadas en sus trajes verde olivo, las jóvenes Aralia, Ariadna, Yan Ly, Liset, Yamila, Ailé, Milagros y Lizet dejan adivinar la energía, voluntad y delicadeza que habitaban en Celia, Haydée y Vilma, por solo mencionar algunas de esas mujeres que nutren e irradian la historia patria.
«A veces no lo advertimos con total claridad, pero cuando damos el paso al frente en tareas como esta, estamos adueñándonos del espíritu de todas esas grandes féminas que nos precedieron y que, apropiándome del sentido de las palabras de Fidel, hubieran sido como nosotras», reflexionó Milagros Baserio.

La perentoria realidad, marcada por la actual dinámica poblacional, las hizo entender la importancia del asunto. Y hoy salpican con su gracia un escenario signado por la severidad, la disciplina y el sentido del deber.
Los jóvenes no podemos dejar a la suerte la defensa del país. Sería como olvidarnos del futuro y arrancarnos el pasado de las venas. Además, la preparación que adquirimos nos fortalece mucho como dirigentes. Estas fueron, según reconocieron, las mayores motivaciones que las condujeron a tomar esa decisión.
Cuando Ailé, miembro del Secretariado Nacional de la FEU, conoció de los análisis que se hicieron en el Pleno, enseguida quiso alistarse.
«Ser cuadro implica estar en la vanguardia —manifestó Lizet Zamora— y si aquí se requiere de nuestro esfuerzo y voluntad, pues entonces estaremos durante los seis meses de servicio».
«Se trata de tener sentido común, no importan los estereotipos que existan sobre si esto está hecho para los hombres. Nosotras lo hemos afrontado y no es nada imposible. Al contrario, nos aporta mucho en nuestra formación», enfatizó.
Las ocho muchachas son, junto a otras 16 en el país, las primeras cuadros juveniles que, convocadas por la UJC, cumplen el Servicio Militar Voluntario Femenino en el Ministerio del Interior.
Explicó Maday Iglesias, miembro del Buró Nacional de la organización, que lo más importante de esta iniciativa ha sido que estas unidades se han convertido en verdaderas escuelas formadoras de cuadros de la UJC, de donde las muchachas saldrán preparadas para la defensa, y sobre todo para el trabajo político ideológico.
Una vez que terminen la etapa de Servicio Militar, ellas formarán parte de la reserva del MININT.
«La vivencia también ha sido novedosa para nosotros», comentó el teniente coronel Rafael Mugica, jefe del Comando Especial de Bomberos de Capdevila, del capitalino municipio de Boyeros, donde cinco de las muchachas pasan la etapa de Preparación Militar Básica, más conocida como «la previa».
Refirió Mugica que tuvieron que habilitar un nuevo cuarto para las jovencitas y crear las condiciones necesarias para acogerlas. Pero lo más interesante, según su apreciación, es que nunca las han visto contrariadas o tristes. Se adaptaron al sistema y son capaces de asumir cualquier responsabilidad.
También reconoció que esta práctica no solo es importante porque crecen las filas de los combatientes, sino porque además, ellas desarrollan una valiosa labor política entre la tropa, sin dejar de resaltar sus aportes en el embellecimiento de la unidad.
Dichas y tensiones
A prueba de persistencia, las muchachas superaron las continuas jornadas de preparación física, de desplazamiento en el terreno, infantería y lucha personal, entre otras actividades.
«Allá los incautos que crean que el ritmo nuestro va a ser menor y que nos vamos a quedar rezagadas», admitieron sonrientes.
«No podemos estar atrás en nada, destacó Ailé, porque de esa manera los otros muchachos tampoco se rinden. Imagínense, si nos ven haciéndolo, ellos por orgullo u hombría no flaquean».
Señaló Yan Ly Formoso que tuvieron días muy estresantes, ya que no estaban acostumbradas a tanta carga de ejercicio. «Éramos sedentarias, así que podrás suponer los dolores musculares. Cada vez que había que hacer algo nos mirábamos unas a las otras, yo no sé si compadeciéndonos o dándonos ánimo, pero lo cierto es que resistíamos».
Nos exigimos mucho, sostuvo Yamila Fuentes. «En las inspecciones tratamos de no tener ninguna deficiencia, porque constantemente emulamos con los otros muchachos de la previa», expresó.
En esa competencia por estar listas antes que ellos, detalló Ailé, un día nos levantamos a las cuatro de la madrugada. «Cuando nos dimos cuenta de la hora que era, abrimos bien grandes los ojos y nos dijimos: ¡Apretamos; tampoco hay que exagerar!».
También tenemos que destacar, manifestó Yamila, la ayuda incondicional y la comprensión de nuestras familias; sin eso hubiera sido imposible llegar hasta aquí. «Yo misma tengo dos niños y son ellos quienes los atienden, pero aun así uno no deja de preocuparse».
«Igualmente nos han pasado cosas muy simpáticas durante el período de adaptación. Para Ailé y para mí no había tallas de uniforme. Y como las mujeres somos presumidas por naturaleza, le insistimos al almacenero hasta que encontró unos pantalones, los arreglamos y nos quedan “pintados”», describió Aralia González.
«En ocasiones, contó Ariadna Yero, en el desespero por ser las primeras en terminar nos poníamos las botas antes que los pantalones. O queríamos ablandar estos zapatos para ver si dejaban de castigarnos con las ampollas».
«Hubo momentos en que parecíamos robocitos por los dolores en todos los huesos, continuó la representante de la FEU. La gimnasia matutina es fuerte, pero al poco tiempo te acostumbras. El otro día fue muy gracioso, porque me caí y parecía un resorte; al instante estaba en pie. Casi nadie lo notó».
Deja que te cuente
Lo que más agradecemos de esta etapa, coincidieron las combatientes, es conocer profundamente esos costados de la vida del MININT de los cuales teníamos apenas una mínima representación. Además, coincidieron, aquí nos formamos integralmente y ponemos a prueba nuestros conocimientos.
Para Ariadna el trabajo político-ideológico con los soldados ha sido muy importante. «Existen jóvenes que no comprenden en toda su dimensión algunas cuestiones; entonces es ahí donde les aclaras, enseñas y ayudas a entender muchas de las cosas que dominas».
«Te enfrentas a otras realidades, argumentó Yan Ly, La tropa es diversa y tienes que aconsejarlos o persuadirlos de algo. Y estoy convencida de que nos nutrimos mucho durante esos intercambios».
«Cuando terminemos esta intensa preparación combativa, precisó Yamila, continuaremos el servicio en otros frentes del MININT. Estaremos en Guardafronteras, la Escuela Nacional de Bomberos y en una Escuela de Formación Integral, entre otras instituciones del sector».
El caso de Milagros Baserio, Lizet Zamora y Liset Franco fue diferente. Estas tres muchachas pasaron la previa fuera de la provincia, en Pinar del Río. Ahí tuvieron que acostumbrarse, como ellas dicen, a la distancia, a las botas, al calor del uniforme, a los fuertes ejercicios tácticos. «Pero valió la pena», casi sostienen a coro.
«Creo que ha sido muy valiosa esta experiencia, consideró Lizet. Más allá de ese puñado inmenso de anécdotas que no nos caben en las maletas, tenemos una nueva perspectiva de la vida militar, de los combatientes».
«Nosotras, que ya concluimos la previa y estamos, Lizet en la Unidad de la Policía Especializada de La Habana Vieja y yo en la Unidad Provincial de Patrullas, comentó Milagros, nos sentimos parte de la dinámica de estas mujeres y hombres que luchan por mantener la tranquilidad y seguridad del pueblo».
«Pienso, opinó Lizet, que voy a sentir mucha nostalgia cuando termine. Como al fungir como políticas estamos diariamente en contacto directo con los combatientes, muchos de ellos hasta nos han pedido que no nos vayamos.
«Es muy curioso el grado de identificación que logramos con este trabajo. Yo tenía una imagen limitada de la labor de los miembros del MININT, y ahora me arriesgo a parecer pedante, pero no hay quien me haga un cuento.
«Por otro lado, y esto ha sido lo más significativo para nosotras, nos sentimos más fortalecidas para las tareas que nos asignen la UJC o el Partido. Estamos, definitivamente, en mejores condiciones para asumir nuevas responsabilidades».
