New film club Diferente opens today
Films where different sexual orientations are legitimized will have their own space for debate at the 23 y 12 Theater on the last Thursday of every month.

Thanks to joint efforts by the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), the Young Communist League (UJC), the Ministry of Culture, the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), the Ludwig Foundation, the School of Cinema of the Higher Institute for Art (ISA), the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC), the National Center for Prevention (CNP), Havana’s Provincial Cinema Center, the Media Libray ‘André Bazin’ (EICTV) and other institutions, a new cultural and educational program is about to begin take its first steps to help us know of, study and discuss movies from all over the world where, as the club’s name indicates, people’s different sexual orientation(s) are recognized.

Made at the height of Franco’s dictatorship, Diferente is Spain’s first movie to dare an incursion into the taboo. Naïve and even insufficient as it may seem today, it raised the issue in the midst of circumstances and conditions hardly favorable for a vindicating approach, not unlike other past «scoops» like, say, the Argentinean Adiós Roberto (Farewell, Robert) or the Cuban Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate), to name only two.
Scheduled for the last Thursday of every month in downtown Havana’s 23 y 12 Theater, the screenings will include works from many countries, always presented by an expert and followed by a debate with the audience. It’s open to people of any gender, trend, cultural level, etc., provided they’re over 16.
Emphasis will be made on sexual diversity (homo-, bi- or transexuality), with the primary purpose of contributing to and fostering a better understanding of these sexual behaviors in order to eliminate all kinds of related phobia and signs of racial, ethnical or gender discrimination. This means that other important and problem-ridden «minorities» will be well to the fore in the exhibition, which will also include heterosexual views on women, blacks, Jews, Arabs and other groups, that is, any approach unpolluted by prejudice, intolerance, unilateralism and bias, over and above the subject’s erotic tendencies and the object of study. Diferente will screen short, full-length and documentary films in every showing.
Furthermore, there are plans to extend the exhibition to other provinces where art and culture have paid sensible, praiseworthy tribute to these expressions, for instance, Villa Clara, Pinar del Río, Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spiritus, Camagüey and Holguín. As part of the Conferences on Erotic Culture –of a more general nature as the name suggests– that UNEAC has sponsored in those territories for several years now, further spaces will be made available to this end, no doubt with the help of local intellectuals and experts.
Diferente opens this evening at 8:00 p.m. with the premiere of Bent, a 1997 motion picture co-produced by Great Britain and Japan, directed by Sean Mathias with Clive Owen, Lothaire Bluteau, Ian McKellen and Jude Law in the leading roles. The film revolves around the singular relationship between two young men who live –or better said, survive– together in one of Third Reich Germany’s concentration camps, where thousands of human beings, many of whom were homosexuals, are known to have been tortured and killed.
Bent‘s plot illustrates this condition, which ranked lowest on the (infra)human scale designed by the Nazis for men who had sex with other, whom were forced to wear a pink triangle as identification. This practice is said by some historians to have raised complaints among many political prisoners, whose red badges would fade because of the rain and was therefore mistaken for the pink ones. The truth is, the pink triangle represented the worst of all classifications made by official heterosexual standards, very oppressive and dictatorial. It was even lower than the green badge (for common criminals) and the red (for Jews, who could also be assigned the red one).
The main character follows someone’s advice about not revealing the true reason that he was sent to Dachau, where he would be ordered to do the most absurd and humiliating jobs, but to pretend instead that he was simply a Jew, which he does, getting involved in the meantime in a sui generis love story with a fellow prisoner who does admit outright to his erotic preferences.
Accordingly, Diferente wishes its name to be an adjective, hoping that one day, sooner rather than later, the said condition will be no longer seen as an anomaly or a pathology, and much less a target for attack and exclusion. This is an inclusive, globalizing project firmly established on Martí’s maxim «with all and for the good of all», if ever there was one. All of its advocates expect that when that longed-for day comes, every reference to «the others» will paraphrase the famous TV series: «they are as weird... as people». In other words, they’re just people with their own share of virtues and flaws, conflicts and situations, who yearn for a place in the world and, as if that weren’t enough, the chance to join the struggle for a better society, a better world where all people (including them) have a place and the right to be heard, especially a world where no one will point a finger at them, unless they do it with the best of intentions.

Una nueva propuesta cultural y educativa está a punto de iniciar su andadura. En ella unen esfuerzos el CENESEX, la UJC, el Ministerio de Cultura, el ICAIC, la Fundación Ludwig de Cuba, la Facultad de Cine del ISA, la UNEAC, el Centro Provincial de Cine de Ciudad de La Habana, el Centro Nacional de Prevención (CNP), la Mediateca André Bazin (EICTV) y otras instituciones, para conocer, analizar y debatir propuestas fílmicas de todo el mundo, que legitiman, como su nombre indica, la (s) diferencia (s) en las orientaciones sexuales.
Diferente es el nombre del primer filme español que en plena dictadura franquista (1961) se atrevió con el tabú; hoy se antoja ingenuo y hasta insuficiente, pero como otros que pudieran conformar un ciclo de «primicias» (digamos, Adiós Roberto en Argentina o Fresa y Chocolate entre nosotros) decidieron abordar el tema en medio de contextos no precisamente favorables o propicios al tratamiento reivindicador del mismo.
Este cine club, que sesionará en la céntrica sala 23 y 12 los últimos jueves de cada mes, ofrecerá obras de todas partes del mundo, las cuales serán introducidas siempre por un experto, quien, a su vez, conducirá un debate al finalizar la proyección. Todos están invitados, o sea, personas de cualquier género, tendencia, nivel cultural, etc., mas la edad sí debe superar los 16 años.
Aunque el énfasis temático se hará en la diversidad sexual (homo, bi, trans, lésbico...), con el principalísimo objetivo de difundir y contribuir a una mejor comprensión de estas líneas de comportamiento sexual y, con ello, encaminarnos a la disminución y total erradicación de cualquier manifestación de fobia hacia ellas, habrá también obras dirigidas a la lucha contra todo tipo de discriminación (racial, étnica, de género...), de modo que otras importantes y problemáticas «minorías» estarán muy presentes en la programación de Diferente, que incluirá por ello también la perspectiva heteronormativa hacia el tratamiento de la mujer, el negro, el judío, el árabe y otras lateralidades; esto es, cualquier enfoque que se aleje del prejuicio, la intolerancia, la unilateralidad, la parcialidad, al margen de la tendencia erótica del sujeto y el objeto de estudio. Se programarán en cada sesión cortos y largos de ficción y documentales.
Asimismo, se ha considerado extender el radio de acción a otras provincias que ya han mostrado sensibilidad y acogida encomiables a estas manifestaciones en diversas áreas del arte y la cultura; digamos, y tan solo en principio, Villa Clara, Pinar del Río, Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey y Holguín, que continuarán dedicando espacios dentro de su Jornada de la Cultura Erótica, más general como su nombre indica, y auspiciada por la UNEAC local desde hace varios años. Intelectuales y especialistas de estos sitios ayudarán, sin dudas, en el empeño.
El estreno hoy, a las 8:00 p.m., en la sala 23 y 12, será con la presentación y ulterior debate del filme Bent (Desviado), de 1997, una coproducción entre Gran Bretaña y Japón, dirigida por Sean Mathias, con Clive Owen, Lothaire Bluteau, Ian McKellen y Jude Law, sobre la peculiar relación que se establece entre dos jóvenes que conviven (mejor sería escribir: sobreviven) en uno de los campos de exterminio del Tercer Reich, en la Alemania nazi, responsable, como se sabe, de la tortura y desaparición de miles de seres humanos, entre ellos no pocos homosexuales.
La historia de Bent ilustra esa condición, última en la escala (infra) humana a que el régimen hitleriano condenó a los hombres que tenían sexo con otros, portadores del triángulo rosa como insignia de su condición, lo que, según algunos historiadores, molestaba a muchos prisioneros políticos, quienes detentaban una insignia roja, cuando la lluvia desteñía la suya y se confundía con aquella. Lo cierto es que la rosa era la peor vista por la heteronormativa oficial, dominante, opresora: bien por debajo, incluso, de la verde (delincuentes comunes) y la amarilla (judíos, quienes podían llevar también la roja).
El protagonista del filme sigue el consejo de alguien que lo conmina a no revelar la verdadera condición por la cual ha sido llevado a Dachau, ese sitio donde realizará el más absurdo y humillante de los trabajos, sino que se haga pasar simplemente por judío; así lo hace y protagoniza esa sui géneris historia de amor con un compañero que sí confiesa, sin ambages, su inclinación erótica.
El cine club Diferente, entonces, desea que su nombre sea también adjetivo; pretende que un buen día, no muy lejano, esa condición no siga siendo vista como anormalidad, patología y, mucho menos, blanco para ataques y exclusiones; porque si un proyecto justamente se quiere inclusivo, globalizador, cimentado en el martiano «con todos y para el bien de todos», es este. Los muchos involucrados en el mismo desean que ese anhelado día, al referirse a «los otros», se diga parafraseando la famosa serie televisual: «son tan raros... como la gente». O sea, son simplemente gente que, con su carga de virtudes y defectos, conflictos y situaciones, aspira simplemente a su lugar en el mundo y, como si esto fuera poco, le permitan seguir luchando por una sociedad mejor, un mundo mejor, donde todos (también ellos) quepan y sean escuchados, y sobre todo, nadie les señale con el dedo, al menos para mal.
La película dirigida por Sean Mathias, y con Clive Owen y Lothaire Bluteau encabezando el elenco, abrirá el espacio.
