My apologies, Mr. Simmons

A few days ago I borrowed from a friend of mine a copy of an interview that Col. Chris Simmons, a member of the US Army Counterintelligence service, gave to A Mano Limpia, a daily talk show broadcasted by Miami’s Channel 41.

One of the purposes of this program was to present Col. Simmons’s views on an article that I wrote for Cuba Socialista, with the title OTRA CAMPAÑA DE LA CIA CONTRA CUBA (Another CIA Campaign Against Cuba), also published by the digital journal Por Cuba and either printed or discussed by other foreign media. Needless to say, my article had its share of negative comments, especially in Miami.

Col. Simmons’ interview on TV was, above all else, an overview of articles he has written about various prestigious and experienced Cuban diplomats who, he argues, work for their country’s General Intelligence Division.

However, I was in for disappointment, as Simmons failed to come up with the ironclad evidence he needed to make his point. Instead, he gave us more of the same old subjective remarks about our diplomats, whom he described in general as smart, sharp, skillful individuals who knew how to deal with the press and tried to have an influence in politics. In sum, what diplomats do.

He was unable to provide a single shred of evidence that any of the Cubans he mentioned were specifically involved in intelligence operations. How can we believe what he says if he has no proof? Can he be sure that his superiors in Counterintelligence will just take his assertions for granted without any supporting evidence? I don’t think so.

That’s a fact that Mr. Asa, his interviewer, took into account, asking Simmons whether ambassador Bolaños would have ever been granted a US visa if he was proved to be an intelligence officer.

At this point, Col. Simmons made an interesting revelation. Despite the fact that US Intelligence had advised against it –he assured– Bolaños had got his visa. Not an unusual occurrence, and a telltale sign of certain contradictions between America’s special services and the State Department, he said. 

It also makes you think that there were insufficient grounds to deny the visa and, therefore, the State Department made a professional decision. They had no reason to say no if they had no proof that ambassador Bolaños were an intelligence officer.

Further on during his interview, Mr. Simmons advised the intelligence services of both countries –Cuba and the US – to keep calm, for these are dangerous times. Asked why he referred to them as dangerous, he offered what I would call a lame, groundless explanation supported by important but irrelevant arguments. But then again, maybe my opinion is partially based on the fact that the United States has tried to destroy the Revolution since day one. As far as we’re concerned, these have all been dangerous years, and still we keep going on.

The interview seems to be unfinished. Mr. Asa talked about a second program with “more revelations” and the presentation of a book written by the Colonel. My friend promised to keep an eye out for it and get me a copy of the second chapter, if ever there would be one.

Before I finish this article I’d like to make my apologies to Colonel Simmons.

During the interview, when his host read some lines of my article to him, the Colonel pointed out that he took any hints that he was a CIA officer as a “personal insult”. I really have to admit that it was never my intention to take any of this to a personal level, let alone give Mr. Simmons any reason to feel insulted.

I wish the Colonel understood that we have rather different views and ideas about what being a CIA officer is all about, hence the tag I placed on him. I’m sure he knows very well what a CIA officer is, so if he took offense at what I wrote, I take it back, and forgive me again for calling you a CIA officer.

LE PIDO EXCUSAS, MR. SIMMONS

Recientemente un amigo me facilitó la grabación de la entrevista que el Canal 41 de Miami en el programa A Mano Limpia, realizó al Coronel Chris Simmons, miembro de la Contra Inteligencia Militar de Estados Unidos.

Esta entrevista tuvo como uno de sus propósitos conocer los comentarios del Coronel Simmons sobre el artículo que publiqué en Cuba Socialista titulado OTRA CAMPAÑA DE LA CIA CONTRA CUBA. Este artículo también fue publicado en la revista digital Por Cuba, en algunos órganos de distintos países y comentado por otros. De más está decir que no todos los comentarios fueron favorables al escrito que publiqué, sobre todo algunos muy específicos que se realizaron en la ciudad de Miami.

La entrevista televisiva al Coronel Simmons fue más bien un recuento de los  artículos que ha publicado tratando de implicar a distintos diplomáticos cubanos, de reconocido prestigio y experiencia, los cuales intenta presentar como oficiales de la Dirección General de Inteligencia cubana.

Confiaba en que en esta entrevista Simmons mostrara alguna prueba contundente de lo que pretende asegurar, sin embargo, desde ese punto de vista nuevamente me defraudó. Volvió a los comentarios subjetivos sobre nuestros diplomáticos, a los que en términos generales calificó de inteligentes, hábiles, que sabían como manejar la prensa y que trataban de realizar influencia política, en resumen, el trabajo de un diplomático.

No pudo mostrar ni la más mínima prueba de que alguno de los cubanos a los que hizo referencia estuviera implicado específicamente en una operación de inteligencia.  Si el Coronel Simmons no presenta pruebas, como vamos a creer lo que dice. ¿Pudiera asegurar que sus superiores en la Contra Inteligencia Militar aceptarían esas aseveraciones sin que le mostrara pruebas de lo que está diciendo?  No lo creo.

El entrevistador, Sr. Asa no pasó esto por alto. Preguntó como era posible que si existían pruebas de que el Embajador Bolaños era un oficial de inteligencia, se le hubiera dado la visa para entrar a Estados Unidos.

Aquí el Coronel Simmons hizo una revelación interesante.  A pesar de que las agencias de la Comunidad de Inteligencia, según él, habían planteado la negativa de visa, el Departamento de Estado la había otorgado. Planteó que esto sucedía en algunas oportunidades, lo cual deja ver la existencia de cierta  contradicción entre los servicios especiales estadounidenses y el Departamento de Estado. 

También permite pensar que el criterio de negar   la visa no estaba sustentado con la debida información y el Departamento de Estado actuó más profesionalmente. Si no existían pruebas de que el Embajador Bolaños fuera un oficial de inteligencia, no tenían porqué negarle la visa.

En otra parte de la entrevista el señor Simmons planteó que aconsejaba a los servicios de inteligencia, en este caso se refería a los estadounidenses y a los cubanos, que trataran de mantenerse en calma, pues estos momentos eran peligrosos. La explicación que el entrevistador le pidió de porqué calificaba estos momentos de peligrosos, en mi criterio no fue suficientemente sustentada, los factores que citó, aunque importantes, no era relevantes. Quizás aquí influya en mi criterio que desde que triunfó la revolución Estados Unidos ha tratado de destruirla. Para nosotros todos estos años han sido peligrosos y aún así seguimos adelante.

Al parecer la entrevista quedó inconclusa.  Se planteó por el entrevistador que tendrían un segundo programa con “más revelaciones” y la presentación de un libro del Coronel. Mi amigo  prometió estar al tanto de esto y si en verdad se realizaba también me la facilitaría.

Antes de terminar este artículo quisiera pedirle excusas al Coronel Simmons.

En el transcurso de la entrevista, cuando el entrevistador Sr. Asa leyó una parte del artículo, el Coronel planteó que  calificarlo como Oficial de la CIA  lo tomaba como “un insulto personal”.  Realmente tengo que confesar que en ningún momento quise llevar este asunto a un plano personal y menos que el Coronel Simmons se sintiera insultado.

Quisiera que el Coronel comprendiera que no tengo su misma visión y profundidad de conocimiento de lo que es un Oficial de la CIA, de ahí que lo califiqué de esa forma. Si él, que estoy seguro conoce muy bien lo que es un Oficial de la CIA se sintió ofendido por eso, retiro lo dicho y perdone nuevamente por haberle dicho Oficial de la CIA.
