La pubertadOne of the most novel proposals in the 17th International Book Fair that takes place throughout the eastern provinces of Cuba is undoubtedly the copy What Happens to us in Puberty?, by Mariela Castro, a book reprinted by the Scientific Technical Editorial in collaboration with the National Center of Sexual Education (CENESEX).

Mariela Castro Espin (Havana, 1962), Master in Sexuality, admits that this text has been edited from the concerns, secrets, and dreams revealed by many adolescents.

The project which began in year 1996, comprises the experiences of puberty in different provinces of our country. Each topic is aided by drawings of the writer who help to the understanding of the texts, although her main accomplishment is the straightforward communication she established with the adolescents in its 140 pages.

Issues like the growth and development of the feminine and masculine sexual organs, masturbation, love, contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted diseases, homosexuality, the importance of the group in adolescence, the moral values, the sexual discrimination and the relationship with parents are approached by the author with discretion and mastery professionalism.

This is the only material of Cuban literature that approaches specifically this stage of life, it was first edited in 2003 and reprinted for this 17th International Book Fair Havana 2008. The book clearly explains to children that two people enter this stage of life at the same time, but each youth changes at their own rhythm. There is not a correct or incorrect physical aspect, all have qualities and virtues that make them unique, on the outside and inside.

The director of the National Center of Sexual Education also uses her studies in sexuality, her experience as a woman and mother of three children to guide parents and adolescents through the inner and complex world of an age in which the human mind begins to experience all man’s complexities that if not approached naturally can become taboos dragged along their entire lives.

It is precisely to avoid the continuity of a few cultural and historical prejudices, many of the questions, anguishes or concerns of the adolescence have their scientific and human explanation in this book, where youths will understand that it is completely normal the curiosity for the new experiences and the thirst for knowledge on sexuality that flows in their minds.

But the journey on the difficult path of puberty doesn't end up in the page 140 of the book. It rather continues because this material is the source for inspiration of the first series of the Animation Studies of ICAIC that will show this important period of life through eight characters who think they are living something weird, when it’s in fact the commonest thing in the world.

The series entitled Puberty is scheduled to be premiered in Cuban television this year, according to statements given to the national press by its director, Ernesto Piña who thanked the National Center of Sexual Education (CENESEX), and its director, Mariela Castro Espin who heads the project.

It’s very likely that in both the animated series and the book, the adolescents understand what is happening to their bodies and feelings; but remain unsatisfied in the search for solutions to their more personal problems. That is precisely the parents’ tasks, primary pieces in the growth and education of their children.

Although is true that adolescence goes by very quick it is also lived intensely and differently in each individual. What Happens to us in Puberty?, a scientific material of priceless educational worth is already in the hands of Cuban adolescents, now it’s the turn of parents and teachers, to grow, once again, together with them.
