An educational sentence

A CubaNews translation. Edited by Walter Lippmann.

Carlos A. Morejón, a young man sentenced to three years of correctional work without imprisonment for damaging the windshield of a 450 route bus, was introduced yesterday to the workers of the bus station of San Agustín, in Havana’s La Lisa municipality, where he will fulfill the court order.

"The best way to make sure the perpetrators of crimes like this reintegrate into society is by setting them to work in tasks related to the care and maintenance of our buses, since that’s how they can compensate society for the damages and appreciate the efforts made by the transportation workers who strive to offer our population such a vital service", said Ms. Kenia Reyes, presiding judge of La Lisa’s Municipal Court.

Attending the trial, in accordance with the law, were social workers, the examining magistrate and the court’s legal assistant, who will see to it that the sentence is properly fulfilled.

At 22 –which happens to be the offender’s age– social worker Yaima Sánchez told Granma that in three years of work she has found managers and people in the community who frown whenever they have to rub shoulders with either ex-convicts or anyone sent by a court of law.

However, that won’t happen to Carlos at the bus station in San Agustín, where drivers, mechanics, electricians and office workers alike took him ín, convinced that he will become aware of the importance of taking good care of our new means of public transportation. (L.P.N.)
