Vatican Secretary of State Arrives in Cuba

Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone arrived in Havana Wednesday evening to begin his third visit to Cuba and first in his current post serving Pope Benedicto XVI.

Cardinal Bertone arrived at 8:40 p.m. and was met at the Jose Martin International Airport by Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque; Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, the archbishop of Havana; and the papal nuncio, Monsignor Luigi Bonazzi.

The week long visit by the Vatican official has both an official and pastoral purpose. It coincides with the tenth anniversary of the historic trip of Pope John Paul II to Cuba and comes at the invitation of the Cuban government and the Catholic Bishops Conference of Cuba.

It constitutes an expression of the fluid, cordial and respectful relations existing between Cuba and the Vatican.

Also present for the welcoming of the distinguished guest were Caridad Diego, head of the Religious Affairs Office of the Communist Party Central Committee; Eumelio Caballero, vice minister of Foreign Affairs; and members of the Catholic Bishops Conference.

Su Eminencia, el Cardenal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretario de Estado de Su Santidad, el Papa Benedicto XVI, llegó anoche a La Habana, para dar inicio así a su tercera visita a Cuba y primera que realiza ostentando tan alta investidura.

Al filo de las 8:40 p.m. la aeronave que condujo al Cardenal Bertone tocó la pista del aeropuerto internacional José Martí, donde le recibieron, al pie de la escalerilla, Felipe Pérez Roque, ministro de Relaciones Exteriores; el Cardenal Jaime Ortega Alamino, Arzobispo de La Habana, y el Nuncio Apostólico, Monseñor Luigi Bonazzi.

Esta visita, que tiene carácter oficial y pastoral, se realiza en el contexto de la conmemoración del décimo aniversario del histórico viaje del Papa Juan Pablo II a nuestro país y responde a la invitación del Gobierno cubano y de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Cuba.

Asimismo, es expresión de la comunicación fluida, cordial y respetuosa existente entre la nación antillana y el Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano.

Acudieron también a darle la bienvenida al distinguido huésped Caridad Diego, jefa de la Oficina de Atención a los Asuntos Religiosos del Comité Central del Partido; Eumelio Caballero, viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores, y los integrantes de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos
