A Lady Cop
At only 19, the only woman motorcycle cop of the Motorized Police of Ciego de
Avila,
speaks of a profession that used to be patrimony of the males.

CIEGO DE ÁVILA.— I
met her on a rainy June day. She gave me a cold look and had few words. That day
she only said: You’ll have to ask my boss”.
The following morning, we talked in the Provincial Traffic Unit of Ciego de
Avila, like old friends. She began working here five months ago.
Well, referring to her Suzuki motorbike, Yerennis Rodríguez Alonso, the only
motorcycle cop in Ciego de Avila, talks with the sweetness so typical of a
criolla.
They say she has a fast hand. No traffic infraction escapes her. It might be
better not to go along Independence Street, the historic site of the city, that
she guards zealously. She can show up anywhere, like a pleasant ghost, but very
willing to add negative points to the file of any driver committing a traffic
violation.
However, looking in her eyes that are practically hidden, I understood that
there were two individuals in this 19 year old girl: One with a uniform, a brave
and demanding woman; without it, a young girl like any others of her age,
romantic, loving and a preference for poetry and reggaeton.
“I like to be responsible in my job. You have to demand respect and be fair when
giving a fine. I’m not embarrassed at saying that, often, I just give them a
warning, because drivers have to be educated, just like children. But I don’t
deny that I am implacable with the repeaters, the undisciplined.”
She is a perfect example that gender is no obstacle in Cuba to reach what they
want, regardless of whether they use a skirt or trousers.
“I am a native of Ceballos and did my secondary schooling there. Later I went to
the polytechnic school to study Gastronomic Services. I left it short of a month
before graduation. Lastly I worked as a telephone receptionist for the Ministry
of the Interior until a call was posted for the school to become an agent of the
law and from there I continued to the Motorized section. And here I am.”
And she is doing very well fulfilling her duties. Major Cresencio Escalona
Palomino, traffic head of the province, explained that Yerennis learns quickly,
is an example for her treatment of the people, very professional and ethical.
Because of this she received a stimulus and entered the process for becoming a
militant of the Union of Young Communists.
Yerennis said that, in the city, she gives most fines for those who do not
respect the STOP sign and for illegal parking. On the outskirts, most violations
are about drinking and driving and speeding, problems. It seems, they are hard
to eliminate on the Cuban highways.
La China, as her colleagues know her, begins work at 8:00 in the morning
and finishes at 6:00 in the afternoon. She usually returns with the satisfaction
of having learned and taught something, rather than fines on her docket.
“I’m at a point where everything is useful”, she explains. “I want to improve
and reach the National Motorized School in Havana. There I will try to be the
best. It would be a proud moment for me and my colleagues who helped and
respected me.”
— Do you have any anecdotes?
— The day that a compañero walks along the sidewalk and asks me: Would you
fine a car [carro in Spanish] driving along the sidewalk? I answered:
that’s not possible. And he flips out his identity card and says: “Read there”.
It appeared that Carro was his surname. Those are daily and witty expressions of
people who walk around in the streets.
— I’ve heard that you haven’t fined a woman yet. Wouldn’t you have it out for
us? Would that be a sign of feminism?
— No, that’s not so. It just so happens that there are fewer women
behind the wheel and, also, we are more disciplined and careful than the men. If
I have to fine a woman someday, I’ll do it. Now, I am moving forward with you
guys… so be careful.

Con 19 años, la única mujer "caballito"
en la historia de la Policía Motorizada avileña habla de un oficio que no solo
es patrimonio de los hombres

CIEGO DE ÁVILA.— La conocí una
tarde lluviosa de junio. Su rostro me llegó con mirada fría y escasez de
palabras. Aquel día solo me dijo: "Tienes que pedirle permiso a mi jefe".
A la mañana siguiente,
conversamos, como viejos conocidos, en la Unidad Provincial de Tránsito de Ciego
de Ávila, donde labora desde hace unos cinco meses.
Bien cerca de su moto Suzuki,
Yerennis Rodríguez Alonso, la única mujer "caballito" de Ciego de Ávila, habla
con la amabilidad de la mujer criolla.
Dicen que tiene la mano "alegre".
No se le escapa un infractor. Es como para no transitar por la calle
Independencia, en el casco histórico de la ciudad, del cual ella es celosa
guardiana. Puede aparecer dondequiera como un fantasma agradable, pero que suma
puntos negativos al expediente de cualquier conductor que viole el Código de
Tránsito.
Sin embargo, frente a ella,
mirándole a unos ojos que apenas se le ven, comprendí que en esta muchacha, de
solo 19 años de edad, habitan dos personas: con uniforme, una mujer exigente de
armas tomar; sin él, una joven como otras tantas de su edad, romántica,
enamorada y con preferencia por los poemas y el reggaetton.
"Me gusta ser responsable en el
trabajo. Una tiene que darse a respetar y ser justa a la hora de poner una multa.
No me da pena decir que muchas veces solo he llamado la atención, porque a los
conductores, como a los niños, hay que educarlos. No te niego que con el
reincidente, el indisciplinado, soy implacable."
Es el fiel reflejo de que en
Cuba el sexo no es óbice para llegar a donde alguien se lo proponga, no importa
si viste faldas o pantalones.
"Soy nativa de Ceballos. Allí
cursé mis estudios hasta la secundaria. Después pasé al politécnico para
estudiar Servicio Gastronómico. Lo dejé faltándome un mes para graduarme. Por
último, trabajé como pizarrista del Ministerio del Interior, hasta que llegó la
convocatoria para la escuela de Agente del Orden Público, y de ahí a la
Motorizada. Y aquí estoy."
Y anda muy bien en el
cumplimiento de sus deberes. El mayor Cresencio Escalona Palomino, jefe de
Tránsito en la provincia, afirma que Yerennis asimila los conocimientos con
rapidez, es ejemplo en el trato a la población, muy profesional y tiene gran
ética. Por su actitud fue estimulada y se le inició el proceso de crecimiento
para el ingreso a la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas.
Yerennis argumenta que, dentro
de la ciudad, la mayor cantidad de notificaciones las pone por no respetar la
señal de PARE y por mal estacionamiento. Fuera de la urbe, los artículos más
violados son los referidos a la ingestión de bebidas alcohólicas y el exceso de
velocidad, males que, al parecer, cuesta trabajo erradicarlos de las carreteras
cubanas.
La China, como le dicen sus
compañeros, comienza la jornada laboral a las 8:00 de la mañana y la concluye a
las 6:00 de la tarde. Siempre que regresa, más que con multas en la tablilla, lo
hace con la satisfacción de haber aprendido y enseñado algo.
"Estoy en un momento en que todo
me es útil", explica. "Quiero superarme y llegar hasta la Escuela Nacional de la
Motorizada, en Ciudad de La Habana. Allí me propondré ser de las mejores. Sería
un orgullo para mí y mis compañeros que tanto me ayudan y respetan."
— ¿Alguna anécdota?
— El día en que un compañero
viene por la acera y me pregunta: "¿Usted multaría a un carro que ande por la
acera?" Yo le digo: no es posible. Y él, ni corto ni perezoso, saca el Carné de
Identidad y me dice: "Lea ahí". Resulta que Carro era su apellido. Son las
ocurrencias cotidianas y graciosas de muchas personas que andan calle arriba y
calle abajo.
— Según me enteré, todavía no
has multado a ninguna mujer. ¿No la tendrás cogida con nosotros?, ¿no será este
un rasgo de feminismo?
— Nada de eso. Sucede que hay
menos mujeres detrás del timón y, además, somos mucho más disciplinadas y
precavidas que los hombres. Si algún día tengo que multar a alguna, lo haré. Por
ahora voy adelantando con ustedes, así que cuídate.
