National and foreign experts in human sexuality focused their attention
on Cuban transsexuals, the treatment they receive and how they can
benefit from our social policies, the prevailing topic of discussions
yesterday in the opening session of the IV Cuban Congress of Sexual
Orientation and Sex Education and Therapy, to be held in Havana’s
International Conference Center until next January 18th.
Mariela Castro,
director of the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), talked in
her master conference about the importance of taking due notice of these
individuals and sang the praises of the National Commission of Integral
Attention to Transsexuals, among whose goals is the coordination of both
the Cuban Strategy and a
healthcare plan including the promotion of scientific research into this
subject.
Also in the
limelight was the design of campaigns to educate people on and raise
their awareness of the need to understand and respect transsexuals, as
well as a process to include the issue of gender identity and sexual
orientation in the Family Code as part of the efforts to provide legal
mechanisms ruling over the integral, nondiscriminatory treatment of
these individuals.
Master of Social
Sciences Giselle Ivette Guerra pointed out Cuba’s need for ad hoc
systematic informative strategies, either specific or general, where
human diversity and sexuality are addressed in ways such that people
take in the uselessness and unfairness of prejudice.
Papers will be
presented as well on subjects of clinical sexology, child abuse
prevention, couples’ exposure to STDs and chronic diseases, professional
training and sex education programs in Cuban society.
