Do you like your mango green or ripe?

«Flying is about much more than having grown /
and becoming mature is sometimes the catch».

From a song by the duo Buena Fe

Sigmund Freud, the famous psychoanalyst, was once asked what a mature person should be able to do. His reply was, «Love and work».

Important as they are to human beings, neither one of these activities can cover by itself the whole scope of these concepts and their significant influence on individual development. A browse through the dictionary reveals around 20 entries under the headword for maturity, including prudence, wisdom, responsibility, seriousness, discretion, adult right-mindedness, etc. Yet, life proves there are many more.

Colografía iluminada de Liang Domínguez

Experts like psychologist Gordon W. Allport, author of Pattern and Growth in Personality, you’re a mature being if you «have active command of your milieu, can perceive the world and yourself correctly, never lose your touch with reality, and ask little from other people».

Reaching such ideal state demands that we cultivate our character and conduct. But then, Allport says, we’ll be hard pressed to find a specific role model who embodies every desirable quality.

A mature person, according to various studies –including one by the California State University’s Center for Personality Research– is able to organize his/her activities around an ultimate purpose, has more vigor, and is steady, adaptable and better equipped to deal with stress.

These people generally have a great sense of ethics and are tolerant, responsible and highly principled. Also, since they’re less defensive, selfish and distrustful, they achieve happiness most of the time.

A number of past and present personalities whose maturity is highly praised everywhere share common traits like fearlessness of the unknown, respect for both other people and themselves and a love for nature, and they’re usually gifted with a knack for artistic appreciation, the ability to make the most of every opportunity and a hearty enjoyment of life.

Regardless of their age, the way these individuals express their sexuality goes beyond a simple attempt to let off emotional tension. They’re not straight-laced or repressed, but neither do they lie down and die for not having anyone to love. And although they have no qualms about expressing their sexual urges –capable as they are to enjoy intimacy with friends or partners– they try to avoid being getting dragged into any conflicts either with themselves or society, as they manage to be independent by staying away from gossipmongers, busybodies and hangers-on and respecting everybody’s personal space to develop their own spiritual and social identity. That’s why they loath whiners and hypercritics.

Jealousy and sarcasm are poison to them, attitudes fitting of immature, possessive individuals exclusively centered on themselves and their immediate surroundings and for whom other people’s feelings are either dangerous or unimportant.

According to specialists, wondering constantly about what’s fair and unfair about life reveals a lack of maturity, much less mistaking the end for the means or taking inadequate steps to reach a goal.

As a rule, immature people love on their own terms and as they think it fit depending on the circumstances, a ‘privilege’ other people must pay for. More often than not, however, the price entails their giving up all hopes of self-fulfillment and happiness.

ANYTHING BUT CHILD’S PLAY...

Of course, maturity doesn’t mean perfection. But thanks to their creative and good-humored nature even under adverse circumstances, mature people remain close to a civilized behavior. Their moments of anger or impatience are short-lived and followed by increased empathy towards others, finding it easier to put themselves in their place and show them affection.

The more we know our negative qualities, the less we put them across to other people. Friendliness is one of the first signs of maturity, and one which must be trained since childhood. Social life may be painful now and then, but we can control ourselves better if we understand that not all attacks on pride are an invitation to chaos.

Paradoxical though it may sound, seldom does life on easy street lead to maturity. Our negative experiences are the dividing line between the development and impoverishment of personality. It all boils down to how we cope with a given situation, be it a break with family or the loss of a great love –who died on or broke up with you–, a shattered dream, a delayed project, or even a colleague who makes your life miserable out of wickedness or with the best of intentions.

As time goes by we develop our psyche, albeit experience and maturity not always go hand in hand. A self-centered attitude belies the chronological age of some adults, whereas we often find teenagers whose down-to-earth, well-balanced personality gives the impression that they have grown too fast, to the point that sometimes we worry that they might be ‘skipping’ stages. Yet, adolescents are expected to undertake an endless search for themselves, at their own pace and down their own ways.

Maturity grows as our life is no longer focused on the satisfaction of immediate or individual needs and we broaden our horizons and reasons to exist in society, without renouncing our purest ambitions.

Allport says that when we cite examples of mature people we seldom include family members. Our list is usually made of strangers, mostly from the opposite sex.

Perhaps our emotional closeness to and knowledge about our next of kin’s weaknesses and flaws detract from the objectivity of the exercise. That’s why many families fail to make a just appraisal of their young’s evolution and then feel surprised or frightened when «all of a sudden» those teenagers decide to distance themselves and follow their own instincts in matters of love, friendship or personal preference.

Lending a respectful ear and avoiding groundless restrictions is vital in these cases, because that’s when their purpose in life and discernment begin to take shape, an indispensable stage where they little by little become independent of their closest cronies, fashions and currents.

Mature people upgrade themselves and will only change their mind if they have a good grasp of a different viewpoint, never under the influence of flattery, criticism or pressure.

Helping others develop their assertiveness is a sign of maturity: we must defend our right to express our own views and feelings no less than we must be considerate toward other people’s opinions. And when we get upset by something or someone, we must bottle up our emotions, take up the challenge of accepting things the way they are –regardless of whether it’s your fault or somebody else’s– and find an honorable solution.

Forbearance also provides an opportunity to help ourselves grow, something we must at least try to keep in mind even when all hope is lost.

A. N.: It’s been three years since I started a steady relation with my partner, whom I married less than a year ago. Sex had never been a problem, but now she says she would like to experience other incentives like group sex (namely threesomes). It’s not exactly a bad idea as far as I’m concerned, but I still don’t know how to go about it with my wife. She’s against flings in public places and the like, and she’s thinking of doing this with common acquaintances whose reaction to such an invitation is impossible to know, not to mention that I don’t know what our friendship will be like afterwards. Is it advisable to have group sex or is there any other way to enjoy new incentives?

As long as you’re not sure that you really want to have a different kind of sex or that you will be able to live with it after you do it, it’s better to stay away from it as you would be treading on hitherto unknown territory and therefore at the mercy of feelings you can only guess at.

I don’t think this is only about finding new incentives. It’s rather a recurring, arousing fantasy that at least your wife is entertaining. When a member of the couple needs new stimuli, it’s not exactly a third party who will quench that thirst.

This sexual modality is not usually practiced but a very frequent object of fantasies, quite popular among certain people in the western world back in the 1960s, as was swinging. However, it never excelled as a solution to monotony in a couple’s life. The so-called sex revolution proposed uncommitted sex, free love, and a distinction between sex for purposes of reproduction and for carnal pleasure.

There are plenty of incentives to pick from, but you would have to find them together.
