“All
your warmth, all your courage, all your sorrows reach here, come towards
me…” That was the melody … This was the jingle we hummed of Sin
hablar back in the year 2000 when Moneda Dura began to be heard. The
charismatic group was formed at the end of 1997 within the context of
Havana University. Another song, La Buena Onda – which first
became a hit in Spain – broke into the taste of young Cubans, defying
the control of salsa in the country’s musical context while national pop
rock became the choice of many. Strong concentrations of pop,
alternative rock, something of reggae and other ingredients of
traditional Cuban music, such as the son, salsa, the Old and New Trova
and a good bit of effort and a lot of heart, combine in the formation of
this group. Somos Jovenes asks Nassiry Lugo question about the 10 years
of that musical idea that was and is Moneda Dura.
P- How do
you see Moneda Dura ten years later?
NL-
One always wants to leave its little mark in hstory, but that is like a
stamp. When you start a group everyone tells you “you need a seal, your
own identity” and I believe that is found, not sought. That is the same
as transcendence. Moneda Dura began as a small group when I was at the
University, rehearsing in a little house in Centro Habana where they
called us Los Yoyos and later we rehearsed at the University itself.
That way, little by little, we managed to open up a space. After 10
years I look at that and think that it is a good lesson to all those who
want to begin their projects. You have to work hard to enjoy the
achievements. I am satisfied that people still look for Moneda Dura,
follow its music, go to out concerts. All of a sudden you look at the
history of music and see groups who find a catching theme but then
wither away. With me, it is gradual, and above all, we need to work very
well.
P-
Slow but overwhelming?
NL- Look, once I heard Pacho
Alonso say that he was never number 1 – although I do know that he was
many times – and with his modesty he said he was in 2nd or 3rd place.
And I assumed that experience because what is important is not to make a
song that catches at one moment but to be one that is most listened-to.
That has been part of my work: Moneda Dura is always present in the
musical scene, above the hit parades and prizes.
P- Going back to the 10
years, you referred to 10 songs that were important for this history of
the group.
NL-
(Laughing) Imagine that… During these 10 years we have made five records
and it is very difficult to choose only one number but I’ll try. Perhaps
it could be La Buena Onda, Sin hablar, Ella parece, Lola, Ni dulce ni
salá, Me quedaré, Candil de nieve, Ojalá, Callejero, Luna llena, are
songs that have made a mark for the group. Now we are putting out a
fifth record, Almas sin bolsillos and the subject, Al sudeste has done
its bit.
P- What is the dynamics
of the group?
NL-
A good point is that the members are very good people. You come and find
from the props manager to a musician who are all good people as well as
good workers. I have always worked with this maxim: You can be a very
good musician but if you are a bad person then you do not work with me.
And that for me is very important because Moneda Dura is not only work;
we live together in many places, during many tours and I like people to
feel comfortable. So then here we all get along and help each other.
Now, I am demanding, because I like to arrive early at rehearsals. I am
very picky and I don’t care how many hours are necessary for
rehearsals.
P- Mentioning now your
style of work…what maxim rules it?
NL-
I tend to use proverbs often and there are some that define my manner of
work. But one that serves as a guide for me is that I do not live in a
racetrack but in resistance. That is to say, I do music not for now, not
for be catching now. I am interested in making records to work on it for
a long time. That is why I am not too interested in the lists of hits or
to making a record a year. I like to work slowly so that, at the end,
things come out better. I also move between the cultured and the popular
and try to find a mid-point, to make good music that becomes preferred
by a wide variety of the public.
P- Let us return to the number 10, but now, with
musicians who have had an influence on you, and, on the group.
NL-
I’ll tell you who: Juan Formell, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Sting,
Paul McCartney,
Mark Knopfler, Dave Matthews,
Gilberto Gil, Sindo Garay and
Bob Dylan. In truth there are many
musicians I admire but these are the most important for me.
P- There are important
musicians in your list, with different styles, therefore the influence
you receive is very varied. What music have you not done but would like
to do?
NL-
In truth Moneda Dura has done a lot within the possibilities of pop
rock. But I do think that the group has taken advantage of it. Referring
to what I would like to do, I am thinking of something I owe myself: a
record of ballads. I am working on the idea to have songs that have much
to say and that have melody.
P- Perspectives of the
group in the short and long terms...
NL- Right now that the record Alma sin bolsillos is
moving around, inside and outside Cuba. In the long range I don’t have
anything. Not from now in five or 10 years… I go along step by step,
rising each step as I reach it.
P- From Luna llena you
have begun working on the world of video clips. What does that mean for
the group and how do you manage the functions of director-performer?
NL- Video clips are part of our work. It is very
important to promote the themes and is an interesting audiovisual
complement. Now, since I made the last videos of the group (Luna llena,
Mala leche, Al sudeste) it is because it is advantageous from the point
of view of final product. If what a person knows what he wants to
achieve, because you made the piece and are clear of the emphasis that
you want in certain moments of the video, the result leaves you pleased.
Once you know the technology to do it, although there are still things
to learn, it is already a step forward; you can do the video clip like
you have it in your mind. It is a lot of fun, needs time and work; you
learn much and makes you more integral as an artist.
P- What moments have
been most important for the group?
NL-
For us the Gala de la Hispanidad in Spain in 1999 was very important.
Also the first concert in the Karl Marx Theater because I was concerned
if we would be able to fill it and, finally, we did. The history of
Moneda Dura I hold as a good life and in which there are no “great
moments” but many good moments. When you see a theater full before
beginning a concert and then see the people leave happy, those are
special moments.
P- Negative moments?
NL-
The life of Moneda Dura is filled with many happy moments and I don’t
think there are any bad ones. But well, yes, some things happen … For
example, a short while ago something happened to me in the midst of the
euphoria of a concert. I announced that we were going to play a piece
and when the pianist began I began to sing another one. All the
musicians looked at me surprised and said: “well…” Luckily the audience
allowed me an opportunity to begin again. It also happens that when you
play some one may make a mistake. Then, since we are so in tune and each
one knows what to do, they all look at the one who made the mistake and
say “WEEELL!” (laughing)
P- Nassiry, what does
Moneda Dura mean for you.
NL-
I have always thought of Moneda not as my group but as my life’s
project. In other words, I live for Moneda Dura. And best of all most of
the group have a feeling of belonging. Really, I am very demanding and,
until now, it has worked.
P- In one word,
summarize this decade for the group.
NL-
….Productive… But, can I say more than one word? (he smiles)
P- Sure...
NL-
For me, summarizing these 10 years of Moneda Dura is very
complicated...I say it is a productive decade because I think of the
group as in a constant change and production. We now have five records,
had many concerts in Cuba and others abroad, we have several video clips
…It has been a very busy period and, above all, to see how we change
with our music. The public also feels this and new followers appear.
Yes, these 10 years have been productive.
Moneda Dura is still charging. It celebrates its 10 years
in family and keeps the combination of pop rock with national
traditional music as elements that identify them inside and outside of
Cuba. His new record, Alma sin Bolsillos, sings for different spaces of
reality, be it love of a couple, filial love or sharp opinions regarding
social problems. With the same energy as in the beginning, the melody of
the new proposal is repeated in the media, among the young people who
hear his music the first time and among those who, since 1997, follow
his steps.

comenzaba a escucharse Moneda Dura.
Somos Jóvenes vuelve a
Moneda Dura.
Me
P- A
ayudamos.
A mí me
Matthews, Gilberto Gil, Sindo Garay y Bob Dylan.
¿Qué música no has hecho y te
P-
A largo plazo no tengo nada.
Ni de aquí a cinco ni a 10 años… Yo voy pasito a pasito, subiendo el
escalón que se presente en el camino.
P- Desde
exigente y hasta ahora he tenido buenos resultados.
P- En una
palabra, resume esta década del grupo.
NL- ….Productiva… Pero, ¿puedo decir más de una
palabra? (Sonríe)
P- Cómo
no…
pasos.
